SUCCESS! This #wineandcheezits pairing was very legit. We asked our good friend @mrdevinelting to use his pairing expertise for today’s edition and he did not disappoint. Tenuta San Guido is best known for their pioneering of the ‘Super Tuscan’ wine category, which they primarily achieved through their Sassicaia cuvée. ‘Guidalberto’ is a similar but much more affordable cuvée (#blessings, because we need to save our $$ for cheez-flavored snacks). The 2017 vintage is a 60/40 blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot aged in a combination of French and American oak. On its own, the wine is pretty dry and quite austere, though when sipped alongside an Extra Toasty Cheez-It, WOW! The tannins truly melt away and allow the wine’s fruit-driven flavors to shine. We’re revisiting the first vintage of Sonoma Coast Rose of Pinotage we ever produced. This 2016 rose has now been I bottle for 2 years and 3 months and It’s still holding up! Stone fruit, bright acid and great texture. To our surprise the guava and watermelon rind have turned into honey suckle and honeydew. Vosne Romanée Beaumonts Henri Jayer 1988 Je confie ne pas bien connaitre les vins d’Henri Jayer, l’une des figures incontournables de la Côte de Nuits. Ceci s’explique bien sûr par la raréfaction des bouteilles - le dernier millésime fut 2001 - mais aussi par des prix en vente aux enchères qui atteignent des sommets que peu peuvent s’offrir. Remettons en perspective le « pâte Jayer ». Reconnu comme un viticulteur exemplaire, il avait pour habitude d’égrapper tous ses vins, et de les élever minutieusement en fût neuf, afin d’avoir les bois les plus respectueux de la matière et non pour aromatiser. Nous sommes loin des codes que nous avons aujourd’hui en Bourgogne. Cerclé par les Brulées et Suchots, Beaumonts fait partie des premiers crus qui tutoie les grands, grâce à une expression pleine de panache, et à une délicatesse enveloppante. 1988, millésime bâti sur la fraicheur, est aujourd’hui un vin accompli. Lorsque je croise le chemin de bouteille de ce pedigree, mes sens sont en éveil. J’ai envie d’en saisir tous les contours et savoir si le flacon est à la hauteur de la réputation. A l’ouverture, les vins bourguignons des années 1980 ne sont pas toujours les plus évidents, avec des notes légèrement animales. Mais assez rapidement, percent avec élégance des fragrances de petites baies rouges, de fleurs séchées et de bois précieux. Mais ce qui interpelle vraiment, c’est le touché, charnel, sensuel, où le tanin patiné par le temps offre une caresse délicieuse. Son énergie apporte beaucoup d’élan à l’ensemble, donnant une longueur rare. J’aurais adoré rencontrer ce vigneron, dont la légende s’est fondé tant sur les vins que sur les qualités humaines du personnage. Mais son oeuvre parle pour lui aujourd’hui. This was a real refined and classy champagne that did a great job.. * Score : 97 Point * Drink : 2026+ * Comment : Collectable * Grapes : 100% Chardonnay from two organically grown plots in Avize : Les Chantereines and Les Marvillanness. * Disgorgement : Mar./2016 * Base vintage : 1986 ~ 2008 * Wine information Selosses solera was started in 1986, so the wine should still contain all the vintages from the past 33-or-so-years (although in diminishing quantities with all the older ones). The amount thats drawn off is normally at 22%, so logically the newest vintage makes up of 22% of the reserve wine aging in oak barrels. * Winery information Jacques Selosse is a grower Champagne, which means the grapes used to produce the wines are grown in vineyards owned by the winery rather than being purchased from other growers, as is the case in most Champagne production. The entire production is grown according to biodynamic principles and Anselme is considered a pioneer of biodynamics in Champagne. Selosse wines are fermented using oak barrels, in contrast to the majority of Champagne producers who use stainless steel tanks. Two of the wines in Selosses range, the Substance and the Contraste, are produced using a solera system, the same process used in Sherry production. We were able to raise a total amount of around 268,000 $HKD! The bids were very tight for some of the wines auctioned: the incredibly unique Magnum of G-Max donated by @kellerdalsheim made a very happy owner for a bid of 51,000$HKD. The Jeroboam of Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Feusselottes 2015 donated by @cecile_tremblay_officiel was bidded for 21,000$HKD. Another very tight bid was for the Magnum of Ruchottes-Chambertin 2016 from the Mugneret sisters @emctm @m.a_nauleau_mugneret which was taken for a bid of 13,500$HKD. Just to name a few! Dom Perignon 2002 Plenitude 2 - P2 @domperignonofficial The Plénitude (originally Oenothèque) concept has been years in development at Dom Pérignon. After studying the natural course of ageing that vintage champagne seems to undertake, the winemaking team found that, rather than improving steadily and linearly (as is the case with many wines), it develops and matures through three defined stages in its life. The first release (P1) comes approximately 8 years after the harvest and is the style that most consumers are familiar with. The second stage (P2) takes roughly 15 years, during which time the cuvée takes a profound leap to a new quality level where it will plateau for many years in terms of improvement. Finally, the third plénitude (P3) will see the champagne ageing another 20-30 years until it reaches its ultimate peak. These lads are Damon and Jono Koerner from Clare Valley. ⁠⠀ We first came across Koerner on a recommendation by Joanna at COS (Sicily) of all places while at an in-store in New York City. Turns out Damon had done some winemaking there and its part of his inspiration for making wines that are “light, fresh, textured and well structured with high drinkability in mind”.⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ What a fresh take on Clare Valley these wines are! There’s just nothing like them in this region. Who would have thought of Clare Valley as the home of Sciacarello or Vermentino? And with Koerner it’s not just one Vermentino, but two.⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ In 2019 Koerner won the Young Guns of Wine award (after being finalists in two previous years) over a hugely talented pool of fellow winemakers. Cape of Good Hope Altima Sauvignon Blanc 2018 Cape of Good Hope and Antonij Rupert very generously gifted me a beautifully packaged box of goodies with the loveliest handwritten letter. Free wine is great…but, if you know me…you know it’s not really my thing. What is my thing is when you tell me a story about your wine, and that story stops me in my tracks, and sends me down a fascinating rabbit hole to learn more about the admirable efforts and initiatives to save and treasure the Old Vines in South Africa. Also…as far as I’m concerned, spring starts on 1 September and what could be more spring appropriate than Sauvignon Blanc? Pale lemon with a pronounced nose of passion fruit, guava leaves, pineapple, asparagus, lemon zest, tinned peas, and yes…cut grass. Textbook. Off dry? There’s definitely some RS. High acidity, medium- body because of the slinkiness to the mouthfeel that counteracts the infamous jarring acidity of Sauv Blanc. Lime cordial is a pretty good descriptor because it has a similar feel, lemon peel, pineapple, a touch of herbal that we’re going to call grass for continuity. A decent medium+ finish that’s mostly zingy citrus and slightly bitter lemon peel…though, I’m really enjoying finding pockets of fruitiness hiding on my gums. The silky texture (along with the slight RS) are what stand out for me. There’s absolutely no chance, but I think this would make a good candidate for ageing. Aged SB is a revelation! Continental climates aren’t something you often hear about in SA…and I’m fascinated by the more extreme regions and their effect on the grape growing in Altima in cool climate Elandskloof. Fun fact, they’ve also cultivated Black Perold truffles…can you say yum! I’ve always loved reading and listening to the story of Rosa Kruger and the Old Vine Project that was sponsored by Johan Rupert. What I never really grasped was that these terroir specific Cape of Good Hope wines form part of an initiative to celebrate and protect South Africa’s wine heritage. You’ll see some more posts over the next few weeks…but what I hope you’ll also see is me learning more about our Old Vines, as well as the people invested in protecting them. - @capeofgoodwine on Instagram

2019 DAPPLED WINES LES VERGES SINGLE VINEYARD CHARDONNAY @dappled_wines - A delicate straw colour with a reflection of cyan and a rich and fulsome nose, perfumed with citrus blossom, jasmine tea and honeysuckle. Salted caramel, flint, pear, grilled stonefruit, Amalfi lemon, gentle hazelnut and oyster shell mesmerise. The palate is creamy and full of flavour, driven by fruit and minerality. Peaches and chantilly cream, poached pear, fresh apricot, gentle lemon, flecks of caramel and almonds dance harmoniously in the mouth, accompanied by a perfectly placed stream of stonefruit acidity. Caught right in the middle point of lean and rich, this sits between the two schools. Touches of salinity and flint lead to an awakening midpalate that is clean and balanced with tension. Gentle skinsy tannins caress the tongue, leading to a long breathy tail of lime and peach skins. - An impeccably balanced and complexed Yarra Valley Chardonnay that hits it out of the park. Youd be forgiven for thinking this was French, with a beautifully perfumed nose and detailed palate of elegant intensity that really does bring the best out of the variety. Erano gli champagne stessi a raccontarsi, a parlare mentre gli ospiti erano attoniti dalla meraviglia che si susseguiva calice dopo calice. ✨ I loro occhi brillavano e si illuminavano, anche al termine dei sei champagne parcellari, quando si è passati dal colore dorato a quel rosato unico del Rosè. Ricco e sorprendente, con la sua stilistica che riesce ad elevare le uve portandole ad una bevuta unica nel suo genere! Anselme Selosse, un produttore incredibile esaltato dagli abbinamenti proposti da Martina: il risotto allo zafferano e liquirizia abbinato allo Chardonnay di Cramant Chemin de Châlons ha dato punti di contatto ma il suo essere tagliente ha poi reso la bocca piacevole e pronta per il piatto successivo. Il maialino laccato abbinato al Pinot noir di Ay, La Côte Faron, ha invece esaltato la sua lunghezza, acidità e gli aromi vellutati. Una serata nuova di Champagne Society, quella del 24 settembre, che ha lasciato il segno in tutte le persone che hanno partecipato, e noi con loro! The bottle holds the spirit of the famous BXL Beer Fest 2019, a blend of 2 exquisite 3 year lambics brewed in 2015 and bottled 4 months before the festival. The massive concrete building is the auditorium of TU Delft designed by Johannes Van den Broek / Jacob Bakema, 1958-1966. • Что может улучшить серый дождливый день? Бутылку эту можно было приобрести только в составе специального фестивального сета, правда, говорят, остальные 5 бутылок из набора были проходными. На заднем плане возвышается бетонная громадина — аудитории Дельфтского Технического Университета.
