I didn’t learn to swim until I was ten years old & then it just clicked. I swam competitively for Northampton - early morning training...swimming galas...cockroaches..the lot. My teens were brilliant as a result. Friends.Team spirit. Competition. I loved every second. I’ve since dipped my toe into open water swimming which has been a whole new adventure but I will ALWAYS love the lure of the swimming pool. Nothing beats the turquoise of the water when the sun shines through it and as for the smell of chlorine.. it’s my signature scent. Kat won yesterday and had a great race. In her mind she didn’t have any significant problems and it was a smooth.But that’s what makes people like her and others (who will all have a similar story from Sunday) different and why they succeed. I realise more and more that triathlon is a game of perseverance and heres why Sunday was another example: Day before her chain jammed solid in front chainrings and gears didn’t work, my mistake and fixed with a borrowed drill. Swim was shortened to 750, more than halving her advantage on her main rival Power meter wouldn’t turn on when setting up, probably broken by me with the drill 🙄 Got ver cold in swim but mega tuck and kick screaming dive boosted bravado! T1 - her hands were too cold to put gloves on so throws them to save time and stay in the race Gets numb feet from transition run and rear bottle cage caused a near crash on mount (luckily got this on footage) Couldn’t get her feet in the shoes as just too cold Freezing start and regrets kit choices, starts to doubt Gets stopped by traffic at the first turn, falls further behind Fenella Dropped by Fenella on the first climb and already being caught by Nikki - “ffs” Sick in mouth and couldn’t eat to start - thinks “GI issues again?” Almost gets blown off the bike “was 60mm a terrible choice?” I tell her Lucy Hall is 3 mins up causing slight panic. She pushed on trying to catch and drop the other two into head wind only to look back to see Nikki being happily paced Gives up pushing on and hands over to Nikki, settling to letting her dictate the pace Problematic glute becomes “alarmingly sore “ Shoes won’t go on in T2, then run out the wrong way (again on Camera 👌🏻) Had something in the heel of her shoe, “it’s ok I run on my forefoot anyway” Back and legs are alarmingly sore for the first 3km. Hips “crazy tight, Will it settle?” Only had 75% of nutrition and water, “will I fade?” Thinks “Why haven’t I seen Lucy?” I forgot to tell her she went wrong 🤦♂️. June 25 is a date that’s cemented in my mind. The start of the 2012 Olympic Trials, the last swim meet of my career. I fought like hell to get there. Put my life on hold for a year, endured criticism and confusion, trained 20+ hours a week with high schoolers while working a full time office job. It’s hard to put into words how invaluable that experience was. I stayed true to myself. I swam for me. I get to carry that forever. Laura Littlejohn from St Paul’s Swimming Club broke two 16-Years New Zealand Age Group Short Course Records at last weekend’s 2020 Evolution Winter Champs. Laura swam the Women’s 100m Freestyle in 54.49 seconds, which was even faster than the time she swam unofficially under the record at Waikato Winter Short Course on the previous weekend. The previous record of 55.56s was held by Gabrielle Fa’amausili from 2016. The second record broken was the Women’s 200m Freestyle, where she swam a time of 1:59.69 seconds. Previously held by Georgia Marris in 2013, with a time of 1:59.89s. Depression has an unrecognisable face . June 2018 not too far back was my lowest where my mental health took a deep dive into the darkness of depression . Shake it off , look at the bright side , watch something funny on TV , go workout , none of that helped at that time . I was not a very fun person to be around with and rarely anyone understood what it means to feel the way i did. You may see a smiling confident woman in this picture but I see darkness . We need to stop stigmatising depression and start talking about it so that people who suffer are not scared to reach out and say hey I’m not doing ok . I’ve since then learnt to battle this monster with exercise , support and meditation. Friends that were a call away helped me overcome this worse phase of my life . Life is a gift but if your mind is clouded with anxiety and sadness you stop seeing it that way . A beautiful young life was lost yesterday to depression and it shook me and took me back in time to a very dark space . Those suffering from depression remember there is a light on the other side of the tunnel . Do not give up on this beautiful life , reach out , call a friend , get therapy , do whatever it takes but don’t give up. ABANDONO, OLIMPISMO Y PÉRDON Jessica Long nació en Rusia en 1992. . Sus primeros pasos no fueron nada sencillos, ella nació con la falta de estructura ósea en sus piernas y sin la mayoría de los huesos en los pies. Fue tanta la impresión de su madre, y del futuro que les aguardaba, que decidió darla en adopción. Jessica fue dejada en un orfanato de Siberia. Fue adoptada por un matrimonio estadounidense a los 13 meses y se trasladaron a Baltimore, en Estados Unidos. A los 18 meses le fueron amputadas ambas piernas porque sufría hemimelia peroneal. Aprendió a caminar con prótesis y desde niña le gustó la natación. También ha practicado otros deportes como gimnasia, baloncesto, patinaje sobre hielo, escalada, ciclismo… Pero se aficionó a la natación y a los 12 años de edad ingresó al escenario internacional en los Juegos Paralímpicos del 2004 en Atenas, donde ganó tres medallas de oro en natación, siendo la más joven del equipo paralímpico de los Estados Unidos. En 2006 tuvo 18 actuaciones mundiales récord. Ganó nueve medallas en el Campeonato Mundial de Natación del Comité Paralímpico Internacional en Durban, Sudáfrica. También obtuvo 5 récords mundiales que la hicieron conocida en el mundo del Deporte Paralímpico y como la Nadadora Discapacitada de la Revista Swimming World. Al día de hoy tiene 22 medallas olímpicas (13 oros, 6 platas y 3 bronces). Jessica ha visitado muchos hospitales para animar a aquellos que por un accidente o una enfermedad se ven desolados. Almost five years of retirement. I stepped back on the blocks today, and competed in my first Master’s Swim Meet. Two weeks ago when I was debating signing up for the meet, I knew I was ready to come back when my heart started racing and I had that excited feeling in my stomach thinking about what events to pick. It felt the same. The crowded warm up, the feeling behind the blocks, the burn in my muscles, my parents in the stands. It might not have been pretty, and it was in no way fast, but I love the water. I missed racing. 🚨POST-ATHLETE LIFE CONFESSIONS🚨 lol idk what to call this post but i decided to speak it into the void that is instagram. for the majority of my life, i had “man shoulders”. these shoulders come with being a competitive swimmer. i’ve recently realized that how i was built as a swimmer made some of my non-athlete classmates in high school and college super uncomfortable, especially boys. these boys (and yes i’ll call em boys bc real men respect women and their bodies 💁🏻♀️) for a long time made me feel uncomfortable in class and at school because i was more muscular and masculine looking than your average girl. for example, they’d give me looks or glares like “oh wow look at the freak” or “who gave you the right to be bigger than me?” currently, my shoulders are much smaller because i am not swimming thousands of yards a week, and i’m not gonna lie there are times where i miss them. despite the wishes of my misogynistic male classmates, i’d grown to love my shoulders and muscles over the course of high school and college. i loved being as strong or stronger than the boys. i also realized that their comments and mean looks were stupid and that i shouldn’t be bothered by small, closed minded people. instead if feeling insecure, i was confident in my appearance because it correlated directly to how hard i trained and worked for the success i had in swimming. getting to this confidence and acceptance of myself and my body was not easy or quick; it takes time and a security within yourself to be able to project this confidence into the real world. if you can take one thing away from this post, it’s not to be ashamed of how muscular or not muscular you are. all that matters is that you are happy with yourself inside so that you can display that happiness on the outside. i know this is easier said than done. again, i’m not perfect and need to listen to my own advice sometimes (lol okay most of the time). have a good thursday y’all!! hope you enjoyed the ramblings of a swammer who really misses having shoulders the size of texas 🤠 #postathletelife #fitness #throwbackthursday #fitnessmotivation #transformationthursday #fitfam #fitnessgirl #fitspiration - @hannahmae_fitness on Instagram

O esporte sempre fez parte da minha vida, foram 20 anos sendo atleta de natação, 10 em alto rendimento. Quando deixei as piscinas, confesso, achei que nunca mais iria gostar de praticar algum esporte de novo, muito menos nadar. Estava esgotada mentalmente, e fisicamente também. Yesterday, I completed the Frog Whitton Challenge in 10 hours 52 minutes 35 seconds. 6 months ago, I was at the start of my recovery from my third severe depressive episode. I hadn’t done any form of exercise for months - I couldn’t run more than 1 mile or cycle more than 10. Completing this challenge is such a milestone for my mental health journey and marks a massive turning point to my physical and mental wellness, YAY! Putting my hands together for an amazing crowd at Karlovy Vary World Cup 🥈 🙏 . What a weekend! What a way to prove Hamburg wasnt beginners luck! And what a race! 3rd Olympic distance ever and I was able to overcome my expectations once again! Fought hard to keep as close as possible to the first pack on the swim. Sprinted the first 2k on the bike to catch the first pack and from there we worked together through the most hilly and technical course Ive ever done, like one team with one goal, to open the gap! After 40k the legs and body were tired, there was unfortunately a crash 2k before the finish but luckily I was not involved 🙇♂️. Got a cramp when I was putting my shoes on, but that didnt stop me, I went for it and tried to keep up with the world champion @vincentluistri for as long as possible. The Belgian @jellegeens from the 2nd pack was hunting us and quickly closing down the gap. After 5k as one of my laces untied and the legs were getting more and more tired, I unwillingly slowed down my pace. Jelle was closing in fast and when I started my last lap I thought I was going to be catched, but that though gave me energy to sprint through the last lap to secure 2nd place and my 3rd in a row, 🥈 silver medal! What an achievement! To make the day even better, couldnt be happier for @ricfbat the reigning Junior World Champion who made an amazing top15👌 in a Elite World level startfield! Πριν από τρεις δεκαετίες ξεκίνησα ένα ταξίδι, με αφετηρία το νησί μου την Κέρκυρα και με σημαντικούς ενδιάμεσους σταθμούς τη Θεσσαλονίκη, την Αθήνα, τον Πειραιά και 5 Ολυμπιακές πόλεις. Ο πρώτος κύκλος του ταξιδιού μου αυτού ολοκληρώθηκε στους Ολυμπιακούς Αγώνες του Ριο, το 2016, με ένα ολυμπιακό μετάλλιο, έτσι όπως ονειρεύεται κάθε αθλητής. Σήμερα ξεκινάω ένα δεύτερο ταξίδι, διεκδικώντας την προεδρία της Κολυμβητικής Ομοσπονδίας Ελλάδος, ελπίζοντας ότι θα είναι το ίδιο μεγάλο και το ίδιο συναρπαστικό με αυτό που βίωσα ως αθλητής. Συχνά λέω ότι όλοι οι αθλητές που δημιουργήσαμε με τα χρόνια μια δεύτερη οικογένεια, αυτή του αθλήματός μας, έχουμε μια υποχρέωση απέναντι της. Έχω ζήσει και ζω την πραγματικότητα του αθλητισμού στην Ελλάδα, με τις δυνατές στιγμές χαράς και τις απογοητεύσεις, με τα προβλήματα αλλά και τη δημιουργία. Τη δύναμη που ένιωθα ως αθλητής για να ξεπεράσω τις δυσκολίες και τα εμπόδια, τη νιώθω και σήμερα για να βρίσκομαι παρών στη νέα πραγματικότητα του Υγρού Στίβου. There’s not a stronger binding than a passion for what you love. Even though I was recently fighting with myself and the time itself (since I moved to Norway, the beginning wasn’t easy - especially with all the corona happening but everything started to go the right direction), I’ve never enjoyed sport as much as I do since I started with triathlon 😊 I was confronted by some people in my life that I’m making a professional of myself. 1. I’ve never mentioned about myself, that I’m a pro. I don’t understand what’s wrong about sharing your passion in sport and life in general. I’ve never been taught any social media «rules» that only pros are allowed to do like ‘you can’t share your activity, achievements or motivate people around you’ despite you’re not an elite athlete. I like to share with people and to spread around me good vibes because I want to share something I receive from people around me. 2. You never know who’s life you’re influencing and you don’t need to be any professional at any field you are. You can be just a normal human being with a joy in life and that’s enough for someone who’s trying to find himself. 3. Accusing another people from living the life wrong way is a wrong point itself and it’s a sign of not living a happy and full life. Don’t let anyone take your joy in life!
