Exactly 4 years ago today my life changed dramatically. One moment I was just a teenager from a small nation who had only started competing as a professional athlete 6 months ago, the next moment I had an Olympic medal. It felt that sudden, I felt so young and naive, that something like this wouldn’t happen to me, not this soon. But I had the most fun out there, I had all of my support team and family in the crowd, and I couldn’t have competed any better. It was the most perfect moment filled with more emotion than I thought was possible. I will always look back on that day with the same emotion, and feel so grateful that I had that opportunity, to compete against the worlds best with no expectation, just pure joy. 20 years ago... As a 9 year old girl sitting in the lounge room with my family at home, as we watched Cathy run her 400m race at the Sydney 2000 Olympics. It gave me goosebumps, teary eyes, and chills through my body when she ran for Gold and crossed that finish line. For me, I look back on it now and it wasn’t just a race, or just a Gold medal, Cathy embodied the strength of overcoming the struggles of our people who have faced racism and defied all odds. From that moment as a young Aboriginal girl growing up in Western Sydney, I was proud to be black, I was inspired to dream, and she showed everyone the impossible is possible. Cathy not only lit the Olympic flame that year but also the one inside of me and from then on I truly believed that success could be a possibility for me too. As I’ve now ended my 2020 season, I deeped that this was my last year as an u23 so I thought I’d reflect In 2014 When I was going to SIAB schools on the train with @kevinmetzger1 I told him I wanted to break the british u17 triple jump record, even though I’d only triple jumped a handful of times and I did! In 2015 realised that to qualify for world youths I had to jump the British u18 record and I did, i also broke the indoor british u20 record, indoor u23 and outdoor u23 records too! Live from Rotterdam in networks spanning 135 countries, the #sltarenagames pits 20 of the best male and female triathletes, including @jonnybrownleetri, @jgomeznoya @cassandrebeaugrand and @tri.anne.haug against each other in a pool swim, followed by a @gozwift virtual turbo ride and @assaultfitness curved treadmill run. And because it’s Super League we are making them do it 3 times in a row, or course. #OnThisDay 25 September 2000 – Day 4 of the athletics program at the Sydney Olympics. The morning session which commenced was watched by 92,154 spectators. NSW athletes in action were Debbi Edwards in the 100m hurdles where she just missed her PB, running 13.24 and Peter Burge leapt 8.06m in the long jump qualifying. For the former triple jumper, it was his 12th competition over 8 metres in 2000. The evening session crowd was 112,524 spectators, the largest in history and it is widely regarded as the greatest night in track and field history and is known as ‘Magic Monday’. NSW had two athletes competing, Grant Cremer in the 800m semi-finals – where he had become just the second Australian semi-finalists in the previous 32 years, and Andrew Murphy in the triple jump final – just the second Australian in 20 years. What the NSW athletes said: Debbi Edwards: “I knew I had to do a personal best or under 13sec to get through.” “It was a fairly hard heat. I was hoping to be able to stay up there with them but I placed fifth. `` It was good walking out to the start of the race, everyone calls out and wishes you well but when you get into the blocks and they are still calling out it can be unsettling. Its just something I will hopefully get used to. Debbi said her parents Bob and Dianne were happy with her achievements and were in the stands of Olympic Stadium cheering her on. ``Ill catch up with them this afternoon, she said. Peter Burge ``That was an amazing crowd out there -- my coach said nothing can prepare you for it and he was right, Burge said. ``I just had to get a little bit fired up and use that crowd. Burge said the surprise elimination of some of the fancied competitors in yesterdays round would give him a confidence-boost. ``There are a lot of inexperienced athletes in this final. Happy Olympic Day! . . 4 years have gone by since the Rio2016 Olympic Games. 4 years that my achievements have stayed with me everyday. 4 years that I have cherished the Olympic legacy. . . The Olympics will always remind me that perseverance above all else is key, and when you want something enough, no-one can stop you. . . The Olympic journey proved that willpower was in me without even knowing it and that nothing in life comes easy. I still remember the day when I fell from a 10m platform onto concrete and the multiple surgeries I needed after. I remember being told that I might not be able to dive again. I remember sitting in those hospital beds, thinking of when would be the next time I would dive. And I remember that against all odds, listening to my willpower I still made it to the Olympic Games with a body full of metal plates and stitches. . . My biggest and proudest achievement to date and I couldn’t thank the Olympic value enough for teaching me that no dream is too big or too hard to achieve. . . We all have an Olympian inside us, just scratch the surface and you will be amazed what you will find. 30 years ago my parents suffered or hopefully celebrated a great change in their lives when they brought me into this world. Now at 30 I’m also in the greatest transition of my life (thankfully it’s not a kid;). But the end of an era all the same. I’ve had to say goodbye to too much recently... ▲ How do you wrap up a dream. @timothypkelley probably did it best with a simple “I’m retiring.” Apparently, I don’t have the resolve to end it so simply. ❄︎ It was a hell of a ride, a pain in the ass- full of failures and splashes of glory. Betrayals, destroyers of dreams and a generation of American skiers, mistakes, broken bones and broken hearts. Memories spread across the corners of globe. In the end, I’ll remember the people that made it glorious. The mischief we made. The places I’ve been. The life long friendships forged in the small moment between the madness. spectacular sunrises and sunsets...The opportunity ski racing allowed me is staggering. It’s a strange feeling knowing my body and mind will never again experience the commitment of pure fear, thrill and joy attacking a World Cup Downhill... I’ll certainly miss the rush. The white circus. Most of all our small crew of misfits sailing around chasing speed... ▲ It’s sad that it’s over. But, I’m sure I’ll find something equally stupid in time with just as rowdy a crew- perhaps I already have. @the_freakstagram ❄︎ It was an honor and a privilege to share the battlefield with so many and race the world at skiings highest level. Vasco Vilaca tvåa på VM i triathlon över sprintdistans i Hamburg! Det var den 20-åriga portugisens blott andra start i World Triathlon Series (WTS) och denna gällde alltså som VM 2020! Dreaming with my eyes wide open 💭 👀 . Last Saturday the most magical thing happened. After several moths of just training I was unsure if racing a WTS would be the best way to open the ITU season, luckily I took the chance! The 7k swim sessions with Anders Holmertz finally payed off and I was able to almost join the 1st pack out of the water. With just a few seconds gap to close I pushed alone and hard. It took 5k to close 5 seconds, my legs were dead and couldnt stop puking. When I managed to join the first group I thought I would have to walk throughout the run. But surprisingly I managed to recover within a few laps, help the group and even come in first into T2. I felt really strong in the beginning of the run, decided not to play smart, to push my limits and go past the confort zone! That got me alone with the two frenchman fighting for the title. With almost no strength left for the sprint finish I still managed to became the World Vice-Champion! . This medal is the result of the work of so many people, starting with my family and coaches (headcoach Joachim Willén) who have made a huge investment in me. As well as the people financing me through the federation, sponsorships and teams. Last but not least my training mates, that are suffering every day by my side!
