Following a report of a painted dogs den sighting in Sinamatela, our trackers Washington Moyo and Lephius Muyuni went to check it out. Behold, its the Lukodet pack and Didi, the alpha female, is denning! The pack has been off the radar for a while and tracking inside the park hasn’t been as frequent due to COVID-19 lockdown restrictions. We suspect this is probably the packs second den or so. Painted dogs normally move their pups to a new den site a few times during the denning period to avoid detection by other predators in the area that could pose a threat to the pack and the pups. Another reason is to avoid or reduce parasite infestations. The pups will stay at a den until they are about 4 months old. This is when they are big and strong enough to move with the pack. Unfortunately, the team did not catch a glimpse of the pups or get closer to the den as they were avoiding disturbing the site. Didi and other pack members were also jealously guarding the site against all sides. Last year Didi had a litter of 11 pups and 13 pups in 2018, though not all survived in both litters. We are happy the pack is well and growing even bigger and stronger. The last time we saw the Lukodet they were 16 strong. The Gelada Monkey, found only in the Ethiopian Highlands. It is also known by the nickname Bleeding-Heart Monkey, shown here by the red appendage on its chest. Grass blades account for 90% of their diet, and they eat flowers and roots as well. Retirement is a shit word. One year ago TODAY, the US Army Special Forces handed me retirement papers and said ✌️ I didn’t want to leave. I fought through rehab and surgeries for 2 years and hoped to be operational until the end. Ultimately, the decision was made for me, and I hated it. 1 Year later, after struggling through crutches for all of 2020, it crystalized... That was the correct decision. The fires have thrown a wrench in a few people’s gears, but not Josh Bertussi... he was able to get er done at about 7am on this forky on opening morning! Josh is one of those guys that tags out every year, as he practically lives out in the hills, and he’s got an eye for deer! He was out huntin with his kid, when this guy came cruisin by, but the buck slipped behind lil Josh, and right into big Josh’s kill zone! @joshber2c managed to throw down a 50 yard shot, and when they get that close to Josh, that’s venison in the freezer! Thats the first local buck tagged out this season, but before that, Josh was the 3rd guy to send in a pic of a pile of trash that he picked up outta the hills! Good Karma paying off!!! The 8th edition of The Wildlife Techniques Manual has been published and CKWRI had a big role in this go to reference book for wildlife biologists and managers. Five faculty (Fidel Hernandez, Tim Fulbright, Lenny Brennan, Humberto Perotto, and David Hewitt) and a Ph.D. student (Zackary Pearson) from CKWRI were chapter authors. In addition, nine alumni from CKWRI were also chapter authors in the this two-volume series. A few things to note about my identity: Although I am a woman of color and I experience racism, I benefit from many privileges as an Asian American. The model minority myth is alive and thriving - through the lens of white supremacy I’m generally seen as “better than the others” and easier to “assimilate”. I’m able bodied, have thin privilege, and am gender conforming. I’m also in an industry where I can experience financial stability and thus have the safety net to innovate. Just like leaning into the gray areas of what is or isn’t oppressive with route names, I want to lean into the complexity of my identity when it comes to racism and privilege. On and off Instagram, I try my best to infuse anti-racism into my profession, hobby (climbing), and community. Racism in America has had a deep impact on my immigrant upbringing and thus on who I am now. I’m incredibly passionate about it and It’s something I’m unraveling every day with the people and resources I trust. Although the adrenaline may fade as we shift focus, feel free to stick around and see my whole self. Or you don’t have to! Before my work around route names became very public I had around 200 followers and most I knew on a personal level. Sharing for this large of an audience isn’t natural for me and takes a lot of intentional energy. That said, I appreciate the gentleness and maturity everyone has shown me so far ❤️. As I type this I am at a loss of words, and every time I look at these pictures I can’t stop crying. Saying goodbye to one of my closest friends, hunting buddy, brother, cousin, and role model is the hardest thing I have had to experience. There are no words for this loss. All of my close friends on here that knew Zac know how amazing of a person he was, and how much I looked up to him. This will never make sense to me, but I know there is a plan for everything.
