A 16-year-old girl from Amritsar recently received an invitation from NASA after she topped the International Space Olympiad (ISO) 2020. Hissaa, who is a class X student of DAV Public School, got invited to visit the John F Kennedy Space Centre in the US as she came first in the senior category of ISO. According to The Tribune, the Amritsar resident scored 78.75 marks collectively in the preliminary, intermediate and final test conducted by the International Space Olympiad. NASA and commercial partners are helping test technology to grow super foods in space as well as other promising space-based innovations. 8 payloads sponsored by NASA’s Flight Opportunities program will fly to space tomorrow on Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket-powered system, including the Microgravity Lilypond from Space Lab Technologies. Developed with support from NASA’s SBIR/STTR program, the hydroponic chamber is designed to grow aquatic plants on a stable bed of water under efficient LED lights, with no soil needed! The nutrient-rich water can then be recycled after harvesting to grow the next crop, making for less waste in the process of space-based food production. Researchers are currently using the system to grow duckweed, a crunchy veggie high in protein, antioxidants, and Omega-3’s popular in Asian salads and miso soups. 🥗 🍲 Nom nom! The flight will provide more than 2 minutes of microgravity, enabling researchers to observe how the system performs. Comet C/2020 F3 also knows as “NEOWISE” spotted in the pre-dawn morning of July 8, 2020. Unlike its predecessors this year (ATLAS and SWAN) NEOWISE survived its transit around the Sun. The comet grew unpredictably brighter as it passed around the Sun and started to approach Earth. Visible to the naked eye, my crappy iPhone 8 was just barely able to photograph it. The Cosmic Roamer - Neowise has become a real popstar in our nightsky recently. However it must be a lonesome journey through space. When passing the sun this ball made from ice, dust and rock was under a heavy bombardment by the suns particles which caused the beautiful tail of the comet. Now Neowise will slowly start to disappear and travel deeper into our solar system. Unfortunately we (as we are on earth right now) will never see Neowise again, unless you are not planning to live for additional 6700 years. In former times comets were a dark omen and people believed that they would bring diseases, war and other catastrophes. In fact some things in my personal life are a little bit out of tune right now. Someone crashed into our car, I maybe lost most of my images that I took so far and we just had to cancel our vacation due to health problems. However I am not a superstitious person and dont believe in such things. Are you?! NS-13 Payloads New Shepard will carry 12 payloads on the upcoming flight, including NASAs Deorbit, Descent and Landing Sensor Demonstration, which will be mounted to the vehicles exterior. The technologies could allow future missions — both crewed and robotic — to target landing sites that weren’t possible during the Apollo missions, such as regions with varied terrain near craters. Other payloads on board Thursdays flight include a system for growing plants in microgravity; gear designed to help probes anchor to asteroids and other small bodies in new ways; and new tech for keeping spacecraft electronics from overheating. Fireball at the Beach! Last night I met up with 2 buddies on the Oregon coast. We were out on the beach splashing in the bioluminescence and waiting for the moon to finish setting. Just as the moon had gone down, I noticed a meteor start brightening! Then it got brighter and kept going! I had time while the fireball was streaking through the air, to start an exposure and still capture it! It was probably one of the best fireballs I have ever seen! All 3 of us were screaming and hollering as it was streaking through the air! At one point we saw a piece break off and trail along with main part! It was so incredible to witness! The photo does not do justice unfortunately! Single photo Canon 6D, Sigma Art 35mm 1.4 10 seconds. F/2.5. Geminid Meteor Showers An impromptu attempt at capturing the geminid meteor showers. Having learnt about these showers which peak at midnight, curiously setup my camera on timelapse mode for the whole night while I waited alongside, hoping that atleast one of the meteors would come in my widest possible frame. And against all odds, from a residential terrace as a vantage point, amidst the light polluted skies of Bangalore, I was very lucky enough to get this frame. My last shot of Comet NeoWise for a while. This one is my attempt at stacking a few hundred 30s stills shot at 600mm. It was very difficult to shoot and process as the stars and comet move at different times and my go-to mount doesnt have support for comets. No words or images can justify how amazing it was to see this with our naked eyes. @reynkkaneshiro and I decided to head up to the summit of Mauna Kea. At the moment, the comet is visible during pre dawn hrs. Look northeast, slightly above the horizon and you’ll see it. Of course weather needs to be on point. So the summit of Mauna Kea was the only option. It was freezing 🥶 but “worth” it. Comet will last until the end of the month. Atm it’s viewable northeast during pre dawn hrs. In several days, it’ll be viewable northwest after sunset, which I’m super excited about it. In July we experienced a truly rare event, a naked eye visible comet. As soon as it showed up, the astrophotography community collectively stopped staying up late and began waking up at 3am, hoping to get photos of this epic visitor that was only visible before sunrise. I was shooting the comet every chance I got, and still have many photos I am sorting through and processing. This is probably my favorite image from these sessions, captured on July 9th, it is the first morning the red was visible in the ion tail indicating the presence of sodium. This is the same data set from an image I posted that day, but I had never really finished processing it. I had the honor to shoot a full night at the famous MAGIC telescopes at the ORM on La Palma. These incredibly sensitive telescopes detect cherenkov radiation in the upper atmosphere, a beta product of cosmic gamma rays. The pixels of the detectors are big as grapefruits, operate at over 1000V and observe the atmosphere at over 1million frames per second. The two dishes work in sync to provide parallax for depth data. And yes, all the frames are from 8K timelapses. 19500 frames/1TB shot in that single night. The 40 meter radio telescope in Owens Valley seems to nearly touch comet c/2020 F3 Neowise in this single exposure view in the dead of night. the air is becoming hazier and the glow from the town of Bishop silhouettes the massive radio telescope and smaller dishes stored at the site. I gradually moved west to keep the giant telescope aligned with the comet, and the telescope kept moving and pointing at various far away things, sampling the radio universe. An edge-on Spiral Galaxy known as the Needle Galaxy (NGC 4565) captured by @cosmic_background from his backyard in California. This galaxy is at around 40 million light years away in the constellation of Coma Berenices. It lies close to the North Galactic Pole and has a visual magnitude of approximately 10.42 and NGC 4565 is one of the brightest members galaxies of the Coma I Group. NGC 4565 has at least two satellite galaxies, one of which is interacting with it. It has a population of roughly 240 globular clusters, more than the Milky Way. @cosmic_background shares few thoughts with these magnificent photos: “The physics of massive objects is fascinating, complex, yet predictable. Get enough gas and dust in one spot, and star formation is inevitable, with planets borne of the protoplanetary disc that swirls around them.
