@walkergenevive here for a final day with yall. I want to thank Alex again for providing me with this platform to touch on a few issues I think needs more addressing. The outdoor community has a long way to go and even though steps are being made, we must keep pushing for more. For my last day I want to talk about boobies. Why? Because three months ago I decided to have breast augmentation surgery and cosmetic procedures in general seem to apear taboo in the outdoor community. Again, Im going back to the typical construced mold of what a climber should look like and how that can affect your well-being. I wanted to get my boobs done in my early twenties, but because I was still dealing with a lot of self esteem and body issues I decided to wait until my thirties to re-evaluate. As a climber, I wasnt sure how it would affect my performance. Would I be able to do push ups or pull ups anymore, let alone climb? Would it affect my performance enough that I would live in a sea of regret for the rest of my life? A million questions were flowing through my head and I searched the internet for answers. What did I find? Nothing. At least when it came to breast augmentation and climbers -the closest thing I found were experiences from body builders. This made me question my decision. However, went through with it anyways because Im stubborn. Post op came with a bunch of emotions. I was nervous that people would judge me or see me as less of a climber, outdoorsy, or real. Did I just ruin all the hard work I put into proving myself as part of the community? This made me realize how much effort I put towards feeling included in outdoor spaces, which was is stupid. Im a climber whether I have fake boobs or not, and if you want to judge me for that then go ahead - but sounds more like a you problem than me. As long as Im not harming myself and doing it for me, I dont think theres anything wrong with plastic surgery. Do what makes you happy. I just wish this topic received less criticism so more people felt comfortable sharing their stories. In my mind, it works... 🤔 Id just like to hear what people think. La Zébrée: 🙃🦓 •1972, Alain Haunault got up it it at A2 •~1990s, Francois Roy came super close to freeing it. Called it 5.13d - A0 •2003, Jeff Beaulieu freeclimbed it on pre-placed gear •2007, @jpouellet alias Peewee got the FA •later in 2007, Sly did the only redpoint repetition to the day. As far as I know, these guys still are the only badasses who freeclimbed this route. I want it soo bad (might as well do it with style😜) ! Super psyched about our progression on it! •@julienboum has it in 2 pieces with preplaced gear. •Jerome figured out the 1st half like a champ. •I got close to pinkpointing it: started right after the first roof and brought it all the way to the top. “Climbing has always been more than a sport to me. From the time I started working in a climbing gym, it was, and always has been, my home. It taught me to seek my passions in life, even though they might scare me. It taught me Im often much stronger than I give myself credit for. But most importantly, it gave me a community at a time where I struggled with my identity - as a black man who grew up without acceptance from black or white people - and it continues to be the lens through which I explore myself & grow as a human being. When I think about the profound experience Ive had through climbing, Im compelled to share it with everyone…but Im most compelled to share it with young black boys & girls, whom I believe need it the most. I grew up with a lot of trauma, but also plenty of privilege, and Ive gotten multiple opportunities that a lot of people in similar situations don’t. One year ago today, I achieved something I’m really proud of. I spent over four months projecting, and at this time last year, I clipped the chains on “China Doll,” a 5.14a R trad line in Upper Dream Canyon. Send belay by @nmilfeld 🙌. Photo by @scottcrady 📸. . This year, I’ve had several projects. One of them is another climb I’m currently working on that is very challenging for me. The other is an in depth article which highlights my road to sending “China Doll.” Coincidentally I’ve spent over four months working on this article as well. . This article will be in @climbingmagazine very soon. It is the most vulnerable piece I’ve ever written. As much as this route was a physically and mentally demanding challenge for me, it was also a channel for personal growth and huge breakthroughs in my mental health journey. I hope in sharing this that others can take time to look inward and take care of their mental health - to have greater understanding, acceptance, and compassion for themselves. . I’d like to thank @phorrizzler6514 for all the work he’s done in helping me to always go deeper. It was at times not easy to write about certain aspects and details of my life, but it’s incredibly important to me to be transparent and authentic. CW: injury 🤕 • • • • hm. so. I guess Im gonna talk about this now... about 2 and a half weeks ago I broke my left ankle. 🥴🥴🥴 . FIRST OFF. Im okay! Im super thankful from the bottom of my heart to those who have been helping me since the injury, keeping me company while Im on medical leave from work, and checking in on me. 🥰 • • • • As for how this happened... I almost onsighted Godfather V4, which has a notoriously sketchy top out. I was pretty chill at the top, resting and trying to figure out how I would top out, but my left leg started shaking and I knew I had to make some moves. I got desperate slapping around, got pumped, and decided to drop down. . Although you cant see, I landed evenly and clean. BUT there was a tree root underneath the yellow crashpad where my left foot landed... making the impact really hard and leaving me with a broken ankle. I knew immediately something was wrong because this hurt so much more than any other ankle injury (sprains) that Ive sustained. . Of course my first broken bone would happen this year. 🙄 I think Im ready for 2021... • • • • My x-rays are from 8/24, 8/26, and today. The official diagnosis was a non displaced medial malleolus fracture. My doctor opted for no surgical intervention since after 2 days of being in a soft uniboot it already looked better. . She also gave me good news today that my talus bone doesnt look to have been affected from the injury. Were looking at 2 more weeks in a cast, then moving to a cam boot and PT to re mobilize my ankle before I go back to work! 🥳 . Climbing has always been restorative for me, even the falling and failing, but this year I just don’t have the mental capacity to project anything. And that’s ok. Projecting requires all the feels, but there are so many things that have reserved my emotions right now. I’m reminded of how climbing brings me joy, and a few self-care practices to reduce the stress and enjoy a day at the crag: 🍃 Top roping instantly takes the pressure off, and puts me in a better head space. 🌱 Climbing what inspires me. Not relying on stars or grade to decide. 🍂 Only trying a route once. More climbing, less projecting! 🌱 Taking off my harness to appreciate a leftover burrito instead of nibbling on granola bars between climbs. 🍁 Forget about flashing. Even if I’m feeling good, I’ll get to halfway up a route and “take” just to ease the pressure. It’s been great playing in American Fork on Hell classics with good buddies. It’s interesting for me to be part of a resurgence in the area. After almost 35yrs in the life, I’ve been witness to trends and fashions in our culture. And the Hell Cave has a distinguished place in our history as Thee Place for a few years in the early nineties. Young climbers today, their jaws drop when they’re reminded that it was normal to see 50 people in the cave on any given day between 1989-1993... half of them the best climbers in the world at the time... projecting routes... that was Hell’s hay day and they, along with other well traveled climbers made it an annual stop. In hindsight, if those days in Hell have one distinct effect on the sport, it was that all those climbers went back to their home turf inspired to carve out new spots that might have been overlooked for years... you might have heard of areas like Rifle and The Red River Gorge... Hell, our dank little limestone cave was like a 💡 in the collective consciousness of climbers who had a craving for development. It’s like the myth that The Velvet Underground sold only 30k of the “Banana” album but everyone who bought one started bands of their own. I’ve spent thousands of days in the place and solidified many of my best lifelong friendships there. Like this photo here, @tylerwillcutt is a new buddy of mine, belayed by my good old bud Russ Clune (the legend) whom I was so honored to meet and climb with back in the day. Anyway... it’s fun to revisit and climb some of these old testpiece routes and see how uniquely hard they were and still are. These relatively short, not so aesthetic looking routes have some of the most brutal sequences of tweaky, powerful moves of any acre of climbing on earth. Lebanon is an extraordinary place, and very dear to me. The oldest living members of my family are there, and Ive done 3 trips in the last few years. I was there for 6 weeks in the spring of 2015 to make a documentary film called ROOTED: Climbing Lebanon. The tragic and completely avoidable explosion on August 4 is devastating by itself, but it punctuates the fragility and the struggle that Lebanon and its people have endured for generations on end. Its a complicated place, and has many layers. Social, political, economic, religious layers that span more than 7,000 years back, evidenced by remains of civilization from then. Even the landscape is layered with dense urban areas and bustling cities, traffic and commerce juxtaposed against stunning Mediterranean coast line and beaches, and interwoven between tall mountains up to 10,000 ft that are snow-capped all winter and cut with rocky, often sheer and deep valleys. There is so much texture and richness in human history and natural beauty to learn from and be amazed by, yet its one of the smallest countries on our planet. Rich, meaningful stories always come with a cost. There is always friction, always tension. Strong people are not born, and they are never finished getting stronger. Its a process. Strength is always becoming. Lebanon, we see you. Youve been through so much. For many of us, school is back which means so is lice 💀 We had lice a few years back + now if there is even so much as a head scratch— i’m spraying this every.where. My head feels itchy just talking about it! 🙃 Here’s my go to recipe for prevention, I spray this in hats + helmets + hair: In a 2oz bottle, use 10 drops of each oil— Wild Orange, Tea Tree, Lavender, Rosemary + Eucalyptus. Brad was my first climbing partner. As a person, he astounded me. His capacity was so specific to just one dimension, to climbing alone, that it moved me. Not in the way one is moved by a demonstration of love or sacrifice from one human to another, not in the way one wants to emulate on merit of its grace, nor in the way in which we come to fashion heroes and heroines—it was much less traditional, and in that sense, more profound. Brad lives almost exclusively on the surface. His walking narrative, his energy, is and was simply of the now. One suspects with his type there is not so much an arc of character—or if there were, that he wouldn’t concern himself with his place on it—as there is simply character. Didn’t matter what came before or what lay ahead. It is not a knock to that character but an appreciation of it, to note that with Brad there is a complete lack of guile, of architecture, design, or even noticeable levels of depth in his quieter moments of reflection, and it is exactly that simple purity of heart and his inability to engage in anything but the present moment that is his greatest asset. He’s spent more nights in Yosemite hiding from rangers, bivying alone under scrummy boulders, hitching rides, and shivering without a fire than most of us ever did. For years, he’d eat anything he could, from the leftover plates of the tourists he so loathed at the Yosemite Village cafeteria to campfire-cooked roadkill in the Creek. He’d stomach expiration dates for calories, steal any gear necessary, work any bum job, and take any ride to get wherever it was that he needed to go. He’d do anything. Paciencia, 8a/900m ☑️ Eiger North face, one of the best wall of the Alps. After waiting good conditions during the whole summer, we finally managed to give a go in this masterpiece opened by @stephansiegrist and the late @steckueli . One most demanding rock route in the Alps as master @davidlama_official said. Between excitment and fear, together with @nilsfavre and @damienlargeron we head to the base of the wall with 20/30kg bags full of food and water. We discovered an entire dry wall, that was a really good surprise after we knew nobody has climbed there because of wet conditions last months. With high motivation and a great team work with @nilsfavre , we manage to send all the pitches . On my side, I flashed/onsight most of them only 3 pitches I made first go. All the 24 pitches requires full focus, especially the sketchy 7a/b with big runouts and poor protections. Finally the crux pitches werent that hard compare to other lower graded. But the whole route from 6a chimney to crimpy 8a offers magnificent pitches. Of course, the rock is loose in some part of the easy pitches but in the hard ones I think its one the most beautiful limestone of Europe that we have here. I wanted to share my extreme minimalist wardrobe. If you are looking to downsize I hope this can be of some help. I tend to stick with natural fabrics such as linen, cotton, tencel etc, and mostly neutral/earthy tones. The most important thing for me is function & comfort, and having a balanced wardrobe. Rather than focusing on fast fashion trends. Overtime my wardrobe may change with my lifestyle and thats okay. I try my best to purchase from ethical & sustainable brands. A tip that I have is to look at it from a functional & needs & based standpoint. Then choose a color pallete & the materials you feel most comfortable in. Also focusing more on the pieces that you truly love, can make it easier to let go of those who are done serving you. Last year I had the chance to spend more than a month with my friends @jwebxl and @dawoods89 and see them taking down basically everything they tried. It’s pretty motivating to be able to climb with these guys, every day we go out I learn something new (usually some raw power stuffs haha) and become a bit better of a climber. The two best moments were their ascents of Poison the Well and Off the Wagon sit (both 8C+) two of the best granite lines ever. Although getting the FA of Poison the Well was for sure a special moment, I spend around 50 days trying to climb Off the Wagon. I must have done both cruxes more than 50 times each, but could never link them together.. the stand move coming from the low is for some reasons so much more difficult than the move itself. The line tho is pretty inspiring, a perfect 45 with only three holds separated by two dynos. ,Jungfraumarathon‘, 9a ticked: Two weeks ago I took advantage of one of the last possibilities up there to do my second 9a for this year. This route is about 20 meters long and pretty steep all the way to the top. After some failed attempts earlier this season, I could do the route now with ease and confidence.
