The New York-based trumpeter, active since the 1960s, is a leading player, educator, big band leader, composer, and founder of the one of the greatest jazz labels of all time, Strata East. Yesterday was a very eventful day for me, because on September 9th I celebrated my twin girl’s 10th birthday, that also marks the day my mother (their grandmother) died, only to also sadly hear about the death of a very important person in my professional life, the death of Khalis Bayyan aka Ronald “Khalis” Bell (R) who’s often mistaken as Robert “Kool” Bell (L) his blood brother and co-founding member of the legendary super group KOOL & THE GANG. The reason I say that this person or better yet these two men played a very important roll in my professional career is because if it had not been for their success and community outreach a lot of us NJ based record executives, publicists, producers, managers and artists wouldn’t have received the many great opportunities that was allotted to us from this one band. I personally was able to use the KATG organization as a launching pad for an array of multiple deals including but not limited to tours, artists management, studio ownership, marketing ventures, event production and several music industry related contracts and spot deals. If not for this man there would be no @pink @mslaurynhill @prasmichel @wyclefjean just to name a few, and also some of the most widely sampled and air played records in music history like “Celebrate Good Times” and “Ladies Night”. Kool & the Gang performed continuously longer than any R&B group in the history of music. The band won two Grammy Awards and also appeared alongside Kid Rock, Dave Matthews Band, Elton John and The Roots. They also performed on a 50-city tour with rock legends Van Halen that I was proud to play an important roll in. In 2014, the band was honored with a BET Soul Train Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2018, they were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. At the time of his death, he was working on a solo album called Kool Baby Brotha Band, as well as a series of animations about the bands childhood and career. In an interview with Billboard last year, he said he felt grateful to have had a career in music. And for it to be this long, he added. @khalisfbayyan YOU WILL BE MISSED. I’d love to able to give the same opportunity to others, to better equip them with knowledge of self, and show them that we can do something with our traditions and folklore in our community. Therefore, I have started a #GoFundMe (LINK IS IN THE BIO) to go towards facilitating a huge weekend workshop at the end of October. With support from the @balimayaproject team, we will be delivering workshops in the folkloric instruments like the Djembe, Dounoun, Balafon, Kora, Voice, Congas and orisha singing and also, the I strummers of the diaspora that have become a big part of a sound; The Trumpet, Keys and Guitar We will also run a Q and A session with a guest Panel with an open floor to speak on all things culture! The money raised with help with much needed equipment to make this more than a one off event, venue hire and most importantly to cover the costs required so that ALL YOUNG BLACK MEN AND WOMEN ATTENDING THE WORKSHOPS WILL BE ADMITTED FREE OF CHARGE I will also be donating part of the funds raised to @blackmindsmatter.uk a company that does ground breaking work with young people focusing on our mental health and well-being. Today I want to talk about the history of the balafon and the marimba. The balafon is a struck idiophone from west africa, traditionally played from Guinea to Mali, and it dates at least to the 12th century.(1) Meanwhile the marimba is an instrument that developed in the areas of the Guatemala-Mexico (Chiapas) border, this instrument was a result of the african slaves brought to the american continent (the americas). The word marimba comes from the Bantu languages, spoken in south and central Africa, this is the main reason why some people believe that that the marimba didnt developed from the balafon but a close cousin of this instrument, since the balafon is played mainly in west africa, although this cant be known for sure. (2) Later on the marimba evolved into the concert marimba, becoming worldwide famous and being very used nowadays in classical, jazz and popular music.
