2020 sure isn’t letting up. California is now battling roughly 367 known fires. Today, I decided to drive down the coast and document what I could of the #CZUAugustLightningComplex fire. This fire is just north of Santa Cruz, is burning over 25,000 acres and growing with 0% containment so far. It was a day I won’t forgot. On the lucky and semi-exciting side of being a photographer, I got to document my buddy and pilot friend @Jakelounsbury who use to fly me around SF and now fights fires, along with his co pilot @rlenzer. On the not so lucky and not exciting side of things, knowing a friend probably lost his home in this very fire. That part was unsettling to say the least. I was standing here in absolute awe, with a group of locals who were just evacuated, watching their land and homes burn away in the distance. Everyone was in decent spirits, but you could tell deep down how everyone was really feeling. Something I could not relate to, but I could definitely see it in them. I started talking with a nice gentleman named Andy, who was a local Arborist and lived in the now burned valley for the past 12 years. He mentioned and pointed at his three trucks filled with everything he could grab. We sort of knew this fire was going to come at us eventually. So before I decided to leave the area and get out of everyone’s way, I offered to help him shuttle his trucks, as he seemed to be alone. One by one a few miles down the road we went so that he could at least get them parked further from this fire zone. I know I can’t stop the fire and save the day, but I also felt I didn’t just want to stand there and be that come and go tourist. I love this area and have explored this coast for the past 10 years as a photographer. Never have I seen it like this. I am praying for these fires to let up and of course 2020 to end. Yesterday #AirCorps112 was tasked to a farming accident in Co.Clare. The patient was airlifted to #UCHG, a journey that took 8mins by air as opposed to 83mins via road. This patient was the 3000th patient to be airlifted by #EAS since the service began in 2012. Era con il figlio un turista di Roma di 57 anni, per un’escursione sul Gran Sasso lungo la Direttissima, per raggiungere la vetta occidentale del Corno Grande in Abruzzo, a quota 2912 metri. Ad un tratto però all’escursionista romano si è staccata una presa dalle mani ed è precipitato giù da 10 metri di altezza lungo la parete rocciosa, finendo contro altri escursionisti che ne hanno bloccato la caduta nel vuoto. Gli altri escursionisti hanno immediatamente allertato il Soccorso Alpino abruzzese prontamente intervenuto con l’equipe medica, a bordo dell’elicottero del 118, decollato dall’aeroporto di Preturo. Il pilota dell’elisoccorso con grande professionalità ed abilità è riuscito ad avvicinarsi al luogo dell’incidente. Sono subito intervenuti i tecnici del Soccorso Alpino e l’equipe sanitaria del 118, che hanno verificato le condizioni fisiche del turista romano, lo hanno stabilizzato, imbracato e tratto in salvo a bordo dell’elisoccorso con il verricello. Ad aiutare l’equipe sanitaria e i tecnici del Soccorso Alpino anche un medico rianimatore del 118 che si trovava per caso sul luogo dell’incidente, per un’escursione lungo la Direttissima con alcuni amici. Il turista romano, che ha riportato alcune fratture ma non è in pericolo di vita, è stato trasportato all’ospedale di L’Aquila. On missions like this our crews attach a piece of equipment called a Bambi Bucket to the cargo hook on the bottom of one of our #AW139 helicopters. These buckets hold over 1,200 litres of water, which is normally picked up from a nearby lake or river and continuously dropped on the fire. Huge congratulations to Denise Lynch, who has become our first female volunteer lifeboat coxswain in Ireland. Denise has served at Fenit RNLI since 2001, having fallen in love with lifeboats on a visit to the station as a primary school pupil. While Denise is currently the only female coxswain volunteering on operational lifeboat crew in Ireland, Helena Duggan, a staff Assessor Trainer with the RNLI, is also a coxswain. There are currently 155 women volunteering as lifeboat crew in Ireland. We are keen to recruit more female volunteers for a variety of sea-going and station roles across the RNLI and Denise is keen to encourage others to follow in her footsteps: It’s no big deal to my male colleagues on the lifeboat crew that a woman is in this role, because they know me and they’ve been to sea with me in all weathers. The trust and respect are mutual between lifeboat crew. They know I can do the job and they know I’m there for them, whatever happens. At 10:30 July 19th, Campbell River Search and Request was requested by the RCMP to assist with a hiker whose dog had become injured and unable to proceed. Thankfully the hiker had an Inreach satellite communications device and was able to request help and provide her position, which greatly improved our ability to respond quickly. She was located about 6 kilometers in on the Flower Ridge trail in Strathcona Park at an elevation of about 1,250m Thanks to the generous donation of helicopter time by Grizzly Helicopters two Campbell River SAR members were able to fly in, locate the hiker and her dog, and bring them back out to their vehicle. This area of Strathcona Park is beautiful, but rugged, and the options for communications are limited, so it is great to see hikers heading out well prepared with satellite communications in case they are in need of help. - @campbellriversar on Instagram

After spending three days lost in the woods below Little White Mountain, a local hiker was located safe and sound. The young man became separated from his hiking companion on Saturday afternoon before bushwhacking his way around the south slope, finally making his way to the KVR Monday afternoon. He was treated by search and rescue medics before being transported by ambulance to KGH. He was tired and hungry, but reasonably well hydrated as he had been drinking from streams during his journey. He was lightly outfitted for what was supped to be a day trips with a sweater and jacket, water and some food. The 24-year-old was also described as extremely fit. Team search throughout the night on Saturday until 4am before resuming the search at 5:30 am Sunday. After no sign of him by Sunday night, the call went out and on Monday Central Okanogan Search and Rescue volunteers were joined by search teams from Penticton, Oliver and Osoyoos, the Shuswap, Vernon, and the local Civilian Air SAR team. A police dog team and RCMP helicopter were also involved in the search. The subject made his way to trestle 8 on the KVR where his cries for help were heard by cyclists. “All of the search teams were extremely happy he was found safe and sound. That’s what we live for,” said search manager Kevin Birnie. “He was a strong, smart young man and he did a lot of things right, but he made a few mistakes. “Even though he was only expecting to be out for a day hike unexpected things happen. “Always file a trip plan be prepared with sufficient food and water and ability to make a fire.” For more information check out https://adventuresmart.ca/ #bcsara #bcsar #adventuresmart - @cosar_team on Instagram

In 2019 our 43 #SSI #SAR volunteers responded to 15 taskings. These included searches, medical rescues and Mutual Aid support to assist our #VanIsle Search & Rescue colleagues. Training on everything from Ground Search & Rescue techniques, to specialty skills such as Tracking, High Angle Rope Rescue, Advanced Medical, keep us busy all year long. Our #AdventureSmart presenters did 8 Hug a tree presentations to our local elementary schools, helping to promote SAR #prevention to our younger generation. In total over 6,700 volunteer hours were contributed by operational and support team members to training sessions, SAR incidents, public events and all that goes into keeping our team ready to respond. Despite the really thick smoke in south west BC right now, the team was able to fly to Castle Mountain- in the Garibaldi Park Range- to extricate an injured climber who was hit by a loose rock during the decent. Incredible work done by our Pilot Ben from @blackcombhelicopters who was able to navigate through the thick smoke to reach the subject which allowed us to do what we needed in order to get her out. Lions Bay Search & Rescue received a call from 6 stranded hikers on the Howe Sound Crest Trail on Thursday. The hikers struggled in the 1 metre deep snow still found around the local mountain summits. LBSAR responded with a rescue team and @taloncopters. Fortunately, there were no injuries, however it could have been much worse. We would like to remind people that there is still a lot of snow in the mountains, and mountaineering boots, crampons and an ice axe are all required to travel safely. As well as the right gear, people must have the skills and knowledge to use it. At 13:00 yesterday COSAR was asked to help with a wilderness search for a missing two-year-old in the Beaverdell area. A dozen members responded, including three spotters in a helicopter. Other members arrived ready to search using quads, kayaks or on foot. COSAR joined a team of RCMP and Conservation officers, one fixed wing aircraft and two helicopters to scour the area around Clark Lake. As well, Grand Forks SAR was sending five people by helicopter and Penticton SAR was placed on standby. EMBC approved the use of helicopters given the urgency, and length of travel time to the remote area. Friends and family members of the missing child also joined the search, and toddler was found by his uncle at the 8km mark of Beaver Creek Road around 16:00 hours It is believed he walked approximately 5 km along quad trails and logging roads in the three hours he was missing. Earlier in the day, COSAR was asked to help transport an injured mountain biker from the trails in the Gillard Forest Service area to a waiting ambulance. Mal überlegt, was passiert, wenn in #Trier jemand von einem Brückenpfeiler, Kran, dem Dach eines großen Gebäudes, von Kirchtürmen, hohen Dächern, Windrädern, Bäumen, Felsen oder auch aus einer Höhle oder einem Schacht gerettet werden muss? Wenn die Feuerwehr mit ihren normalen Einsatzmöglichkeiten nicht mehr weiter kommt, hilft die Facheinheit #Höhenrettung der Trierer Berufsfeuerfeuerwehr – das sind Feuerwehrleute, die speziell dafür ausgebildet sind Personen in Notlagen in Höhen und Tiefen rettungsdienstlich zu versorgen oder zu evakuieren. Genau das hat die Feuerwehr heute an der Trierer #Römerbrücke geübt. Die Höhenretter übten das Retten von Personen von den Vorsprüngen der Brückenpfeiler mit einem so genannten Schleifkorb, einer Art Trage, auf die eine Person geschnallt werden kann. Dazu seilt sich ein Feuerwehrmann zu der Person ab, fixiert sie in dem Schleifkorb und wird dann gemeinsam mit ihr wieder heraufgezogen. Die Höhenretter übten ebenfalls, einen Verunglückten in das Feuerwehrboot St. Barbara abzuseilen. Parallel dazu trainierte die normale Wachabteilung der Feuerwehr die Rettung mit einem Schleifkorb, der an vorne an der Drehleiter festgemacht wird. Klingt nach einem unwahrscheinlichen Einsatzszenario? Kam aber schon vor! Und deswegen: Übung ist alles, denn bei einem echten Einsatz muss jeder Handgriff sitzen, ob bei den normalen Feuerwehrleuten oder den Höhenrettern. PS: Bleibt von den Brückenpfeilern weg. It was a busy day today for CVSAR. Three calls came in early this afternoon. The first was a BC Ambulance Service (BCAS) assist on the Old Coach Trail. After BCAS was able to locate the subject, CVSAR was stood down and quickly prepared for our second call. The second call was for an injured hiker in Bugaboos Provincial Park. Responding members flew to the Conrad Kain hut and extricated the subject before handing them off to BCAS. Shortly after, our third call for the day came in for a tipped canoe on Columbia Lake. A quick reloading of different gear and the team took off towards Columbia Lake where they assisted the Windermere Fire Rescue boat to locate the subjects in the water. . A big thank you to all the responding members and to all other agencies involved. . This is not only the busiest day that CVSAR has seen in recent history but also the busiest month. Coquitlam SAR was called out on back to back medical calls Sunday. The first call was assisting @coquitlam_firefighters for a hiker with a broken ankle on the Widgeon Falls trail. The subject was evacuated via helicopter long line and handed over to @bc_ehs As the first subject was being evacuated, the 2nd call came in for a hiker with an injured knee just below Munro Lake on Burke Mountain. A stretcher and team members were flown to Munro Lake for back-up, in case the location was too difficult to access. Injured subject was evacuated by helicopter long line and handed to @bc_ehs at sunset.
