‼️PSA: Indigenous Peoples in Asia Exist Although many Indigenous groups have survived centuries of oppression, it still persists today unrecognized. With every person that went through abuse, an essential fragment of their culture died and will never be passed on to their future generation. We all have a job to educate ourselves on the history and cultures of the Indigenous people to better understand the struggles many groups still face today. I had not known much about the Guptas’ story. I assume most folks in touch with Bollywood goings on are well aware of the gossip or mystery surrounding Masaba’s family. All the impressions and questions that started to pop up for me prompted me to do a couple of quick searches. Masaba’s father is Viv Richards, a world record holding West Indian cricketer. Although she was raised in India by her mother, veteran actor Neena Gupta who never married, it is generally known that her father is not Indian. Who knew? I did not. I looked it up. Now, I know and I find it difficult to watch the show without acknowledging this significant truth. I respect that Masaba owes nobody her life story. She is not the one I ask these questions to. Rather, I wonder what about Desi communities has made it so that there are so many cones of silence. . Writer Gayatri Sethi (aka @desibookaunty) who is a mother to (biracial) Black kids herself, digs deep into why erasure of Blackness in the Indian media is hurtful - specially to #Blindian folks. Corporate agribusiness entities have created a false moral imperative about feeding the world. Here are 3 reasons why Iowa doesn’t and shouldn’t aim to feed the world: 1. Farmers aren’t incentivized to grow food. People don’t eat soybeans and corn; corporate-owned pigs at factory farms do. Agribusiness interests incentivize the overproduction of these commodity crops to create cheap feed for corporate controlled factory farms, all while degrading our natural resources and hurting farmers who are forced to farm fence-row to fence-row to try to scrape by. Farmers receive prices lower than the cost of production, while all the profits go straight to the top. 2. This is rooted in racism and the patriarchy. The corporate-conservative agenda that puts profits before everything is deeply tied to the oppression of people based on the color of their skin, where they come from, and their gender. Our corporate-controlled agriculture system is no exception and is dependent on the division of everyday people based on perceived differences. At the root of this false narrative is the concept that white male farmers know best how to feed people all across the globe. These seeds grow the barriers that have kept Black farmers from land ownership since Emancipation. 3. Our highly industrial agriculture system is far less resilient than the smaller, regional and diversified family farm operations it replaced. Because of the rampant consolidation over the last 40 years, if one piece of the system is removed the whole thing crumbles. There is no flexibility. As a result during the COVID-19 pandemic, we see cars line up for miles outside of food banks across the country while farmers are forced to kill livestock, dump milk and waste food. Instead of corporations monopolizing a global market and having CEOs dictate how food should be grown “for the world”, we need to stop and re-evaluate how we do better. That starts with a moratorium on factory farms. For like this sign up to receive ‘The Dispatch” a monthly publication on all things food and water. Hi everyone this is @cambridgestaysremote4all. We are a group of Cambridge students, educators and families promoting for all remote learning for the upcoming 2020-2021 School Year! Why you might ask? Because COVID-19 disproportionately effects our BIPOC staff, educators and students meaning going back to school is unsafe even for our young ones. To voice this opinion even more we have decided to have a protest Tuesday August 11th @CRLS as the first school committee meeting/ school council meeting occurs. To vocalize the importance of how safety and health comes first. Please come and support if you are able and if not we will have updates about how you can still support through a distance. Everything in the universe is made up of energy vibrating at different frequencies. This includes you, me, and everything in between. It’s so important to be in tune with all the vibrations that exist within us, to merge into it and feel what’s going on inside. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ We tend to get too caught up with all the problems in the real world, and lose touch with how we’ve been feeding our spirit/soul. If you’ve been caught in a spiral of negative self-talk, and been trapped in a web of unhealthy feeling habits, take some time to recenter yourself. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Here’s a little meditation for you to remember your true Essence, even if it’s just for a moment ❤️ - @slimyoddity on Instagram

The violence in in Kenosha, Wisconsin, and Portland, Oregon is tragic -- but not surprising. Deaths in the cities reflect the escalating risk of spontaneous violence as heavily armed citizen vigilantes and individuals mobilize at demonstrations and protests. Scholar of extremism and director of the Polarization and Extremism Research and Innovation Lab at American University, Cynthia Miller-Idriss, urges leaders to see the impact of their words (or lack of condemnation of the violence). What could happen, she writes: Leaders at all political levels could affirm people’s right to protest peacefully while unequivocally condemning vigilante and militia mobilization, regardless of the reason. Posted @withregram • @equalitylabs - September 29 marks 14 years since the #khairlanjimassacre, where a Dalit family was brutally assaulted and murdered by the dominant caste residents of the same village. Tuesday morning (in India), we learned of the death of a 19 year old Dalit woman, after her gang rape in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh. Bhim Army Chief Chandrashekhar Azad has been attested protesting her murder. So much has been written about the insidious, violent, brutal, and dehumanising relationship between Brahminical patriarchy and caste apartheid — it could not be more explicit. Dalit women are under attack from all fronts. #endbrahminicalpatriarchy — thanks to @smash.board for language as well as news18. Correction: Earlier this post said the #khairlanjimassacre was conducted by Brahmins, which is incorrect. The perpetrators were OBC, dominant Maratha caste. - @inbreakthrough on Instagram

My oil painting “Sueño”, (Dream) painted in Chile, 1971, dreaming of the triumphant liberation of indigenous peoples. Posted @withregram • @farfewofus Sueño Dream by Cecilia Vicuña shows the Pope Paulo VI, dressed in his white vesting circled by various peoples from American indigenous culture pointing out theirs arms towards him in a menacing attitude. This work was produced during the socialist govern of Salvador Allende in Chile (1970-1973) that was thrown out by the military coup by Augusto Pinochet in 1973. At that time Vicuña produced Stupid Diary (1966-1971), a 2000 pages poem yet unpublished. In those she expressed her criticism against the Pope, the Catholic church and its ecclesiastical hierarchy, emphasising its role in the violent so called civilising processes. Sueño was one amongst other works of explicit criticism against religious colonialism. Hers was not only an act against the Western hegemoníc religious discourse, but was her intention to point out that the European colonialism was above all suppressing and undermining the Indigenous religious and spiritual ways of thinking and living. Sueño affirms its intention that the indigenous people could recover their self determination through the symbolic death of the colonial religious authority. Black Lives Matter is a movement not a moment. ⠀ We must continue to look within our own communities and confront the racism and white privilege that is so heavily ingrained. ⠀ We must continue to listen, to learn, and amplify melanated voices. This is why we are partnering with @fricklefracklemarco in their #passthecosplaymic project. ⠀ From the 30th of June to the 5th of July we will have Black cosplayers take over our account with guest posts, lives, and Instagram videos to talk about the systemic racism that they have experienced within the cosplay community and how together we can dismantle it. ⠀ We encourage you to listen, to learn, and to act. ⠀ #blacklivesmatter #blm #passthecosplaymic #educateyourself #sayhername #justiceforgeorgefloyd #justiceforbreonnataylor #justiceforelijahmcclain #cosplay #cosplayer #cosplayersofinstagram #cosplayphotography #cosplaysupport #thatcosplayfeeling #cosplaymakeup #cosplaying - @wigseverlasting on Instagram

The final quote in the @bonobos quotes series come from @themrmilan. His words about the trans community, and the black trans community, are so poignant and beautiful. If you havent seen #Disclosure on Netflix, please check it out as his commentary on the portrayal of the trans experience, and specifically the trans man experience, in film and media is very eye-opening and informative. Today I will be supporting @blackspacealliance, an organization set on transforming spaces in the South Side and West Side of Chicago into permanent homes and safe spaces for LGTQ+ youth. With the administration cutting all protection of people of trans experience, it is organizations like this that give the power back to the people, and allow those who have created our community to live and flourish within it. Please consider donating and share Tim’s amazing words! ✨✨✨ . #blacklivesmatter #blacktranslivesmatter #transrightsnow #illustration #quote #pride - @adamdblake on Instagram

If you’re white and you know this, please take action on it, continue to take action on it, and share it with those white folks you know who refuse to see it. Posted @withregram • @attnwhitepeople @angelarutura says, “I don’t think a lot of people actually understand how the effects of slavery are still being felt today. As long as you still benefit from a system that has worked to put Black people at a disadvantage for 400+ years, then you need to put in the work to dismantle these systems of oppression. . I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, we have have BEEN angry, we have PROTESTED before, we have tried to SPEAK OUT before. Nothing significant has changed, institutional racism is still prevalent across the globe. Unfortunately we have tried to solve this issue plenty of times and still nothing. This isn’t an issue that we can fix alone, we didn’t build these systems, and there is only so much we can do. . I’m really shocked by the amount of people I’ve seen come out over the past few weeks claiming racism isn’t real...The amount of disturbing and uneducated comments I’ve seen under my posts, talking absolute rubbish ahahaha I can’t deal with it. It’s really disturbing the amount of people I’ve seen not only refuse to put the work in but would rather actively work against the cause. It’s really nice to see people keeping up the conversation but unfortunately there are still a lot of people out there that would rather work against us than with us. It’s time to put in the effort, this fight is far from over. . . . 🇬🇧 Every day. Whenever possible. Change for a better world. Its an inglorious struggle. The voices that will want to dissuade you speak very loudly and can echo in your head. The ease with which we can decide to look at our life and leave the rest is huge. This is a difficult year that remind us that one thing can affect the whole world in very different ways. I suffer a lot with the inequality that exists. I cant explain why, but its something that occupies my head a lot. I suffer a lot for knowing that we all have to act now to save our world that is beautiful and is dying. I suffer because I know we need everyones help. It is useless to publish beautiful travel things here if they may not exist in the near future. The more I travel, the more I discover the immensity of cultures, smells, flavors and landscapes. We have to reach the balance. . Illustration by @closecallstudio - @acrushon___ on Instagram

This is a historic moment in organizing. In the wake of the mass mobilizations stemming from the police killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and so many others, grassroots groups supported by North Star Fund have been the central local organizers, advocates and strategists advancing a new vision for community safety. So many folks are asking how we can resource these movements for the long term. Our answer is always the same: we are asking our community to make multi-year or sustainer commitments to Black-led organizing for systems change. The Let Us Breathe Fund is the only NYC-based fund led by and for Black activists organizing around police reform and building Black liberation. We started the Fund in 2015 following the death of Eric Garner at the hands of the NYPD. The Fund provided rapid response in that crisis moment and now supports the long-term leadership of Black New Yorkers fighting police violence and structural racism. Less than 8 percent of philanthropic dollars are invested in communities of color. Far less is committed to Black-led organizations fighting for transformational change. Philanthropy must do better. The catastrophic crises of this year demand it. We must fully and robustly resource the leadership and creativity of emerging Black activists to reshape New York. Visit the link in our bio to join the Let Us Breathe Fund as a multi-year donor or monthly sustainer, and see this critical work into a bold future. #LetUsBreatheFund #SupportBlackLedOrganizing #NewYork - @northstarfund on Instagram

✊🏿✊🏾✊🏽✊🏼 “Racism is the foundation of this country -Childish Gambino Actor and activist Danny Glover (AKA Childish Gambino) talks about the role of racism and slavery in the foundation of the United States. we can chart the growth of this country, the wealth of this country around slavery and that many Amerans have not given up the psychology around that. In order to move the needle, we have to break the needle. Diversity is not only a good thing to do but it should be table stakes. We need to increase the consciousnessand speak up for black lives, advocate for police accountability, and even the creation of alternatives to our broken law enforcement and prison systems, which also disproportionately harm brown folks. This way, more people can see the big picture and can approach these issues holistically. The revolution will be televised this time. The REVOLUTION will be a conscious awakening. It was 1975 the first time that I was introduced to this procedure as a young nurse. The sweet, beautiful girl was only a couple of years younger than me and I was horrified! As I was prepping her for surgery she recited to me the reasons that it was being done. She said that it would stop the growth of unwanted hair on her face and body, her skin would become lighter and she would be more appealing to a future husband. What? This poor girl did not have any idea what was being done to her. Now, I am even more shocked and, yes, angry that a procedure like this is still happening to girls! How? This is not OK! - @pattylea on Instagram

There are no “good” and “bad” protesters. There are no “correct” and “incorrect” ways to protest. Some protests are going to be more violently policed than others, no matter what. Law enforcement’s response to protests is often more about the perceived identity of protesters than it is about protesters actual conduct* *all policing is more about identity than conduct This is the point that nonviolence makes: passive resistance highlights the unjustified brutality of the police. But- There is no amount of property destruction that would make the violent response of the police morally or legally justified. It’s been a year since one of the most empowering (and stressful) weeks of my life. In the past year I’ve found hope in places and people I didn’t expect, and have learned more about myself than I could have imagined. I’ve met absolute trailblazers, some of my biggest inspirations, and have been given opportunities I could never have even dreamed of. I found my voice and my purpose in this crazy organizing sphere. None the less, there is still so much work to do. Sometimes it feels so hopeless advocating, it feels like you’re screaming into an empty void. But all of you give me hope. Your love and anger keeps the movement going. Eternally grateful for all of you 💕 🌏 - @khadija_khokhar_ on Instagram

Just incase yall forget, victims shouldnt be blamed for sharing their truth. They are not feeding into “cancel culture.” If you feel that cancel culture should be cancelled because your rapey friends are getting exposed, take a step back and self-evaluate on why youre as shitty as them for putting the blame on their prey. If you are a survivor of sexual assault, you are loved and you are so brave. Keep spreading love and awareness.⠀ ⠀ With that being said, Im utterly ashamed of the dance community and the passiveness it has displayed on the different issues affecting us today. It has become clear that many leaders simply tried to save face by posting a statement of change on their social media platforms, but that is not enough. Many of you treated these issues as a trend, and refrained from following up on any further change simple to maintain your own status quo. Whether it has been the Black Lives Matter movement or the exposing of sexual predators, these issues need the same amount of energy to make sure that the world in general becomes a place that youd feel safe raising your children in.⠀ ⠀ Stop saying the n-word if youre not black.⠀ ⠀ Stop describing your aggressive choreo as ghetto, ratchet, or hood.⠀ ⠀ Stop trying to cancel cancel culture to save your creepy friends.⠀ ⠀ Wear a damn mask and social distance so we can enjoy our Summer.⠀ ⠀ Its that simple.⠀ ⠀ #BlackLivesMatter⠀ #BrownLivesMatter⠀ #TransLivesMatter⠀ #LGBTQLivesMatter⠀ #AllCountriesMatter⠀ ⠀ Keep fighting the oppressors! - @ochoarturo on Instagram

For two years in a row, 88 Cups of Tea was featured as one of the 20 podcast shows for @itunes @applepodcasts’ Asian & Pacific American Voices. “For generations, the cross-pollination between Asia, the Pacific Islands, and the U.S. has cultivated a vibrant mix of cultures. Stories about food, art, family, music, and religion provide great ingredients for fascinating podcasts. From Code Switch— which explores issues of race and identity— to The Dave Chang Show, where the Momofuku chef engages celebrity guests in captivating conversations, we’ve gathered a little something for everyone.” For a near decade working as an actor, I was frustrated and disappointed Hollywood wasn’t catching up to the kind of storytelling that reflected the culture and the world I craved to see, and was hungry to learn more about the story-creation side of the industry. Eager to share the writing-related knowledge I would gain from recording conversations with professionals, I built 88 Cups of Tea, a nurturing and uplifting corner of the internet that welcomes Storytellers from all walks of life to recognize that our stories matter. Grateful, always, for the recognition of the years of work that has gone into building the foundation of 88 Cups of Tea, and looking forward to a future that continues to nurture our future generation of Storytellers. I was going to wait until I was 50 to share all of this in my memoir. But it looks like the revolution is happening right now. Cca fostered an environment where i was constantly experiencing racialized trauma. From the moment i stepped into the dorms i was discriminated against. And when i was finishing my degree during thesis a white male teacher allowed a white male student to call me a chimpanzee. A FELLOW BLACK STUDENT AND FRIEND HAD TO HELP ME REPORT THIS. UPDATE ON OUR MEETING WITH COLUMBIA ADMINISTRATORS. On September 7th, we met with Suzanne Goldberg, Ixchel Rosal, and Flores Forbes, all 3 involved in the Student Life and Community Affairs divisions. We went into this meeting hoping to hold Columbia accountable for their anti-blackness and ensure the changes that we would like to see for students and the West Harlem community. We wanted answers on whether the university would consider our demands. However, it was obvious in the tone of the meeting that the purpose was to evade direct response and fool us into thinking we had a chance of making progress through these people. They spoke down to us and framed our demands as “important questions” that we should all work together to figure out 🙄 . We are continuing our work outside of the university administration to hold Columbia accountable to our demands of transparency around Public Safety, hiring of BIPOC faculty, and supporting the West Harlem community. . We need your help! Please continue to share our demands and petition, help us build our network of organizers by emailing us, and help us gather media contacts to expose Columbia’s inaction. The hard work begins now and we will not let the university run us around their bureaucratic system until we tire or graduate. Join us on the long fight now! - @mad.columbia on Instagram

I COULD NOT HELP BUT DROP THESE TEARS OF JOY (it shows in the 📷). IT IS HOW THANKFUL I AM 😭🙂🙏 . I want to devote this post to thanking these @onewayforchange volunteers (the #OwChangers) for having (walked) and for walking hands in hands with me in this whole journey. Now, I realize my wildest dream of providing young Malagasy people with opportunities so that they can serve others, grow personally & professionally while being matched with volunteering opportunities across the island, discover Madagascar in a pretty different way, be challenged and improve skills while experiencing new things was DEFINITELY worth it.❤️🇲🇬 . Starting OwC alone in July 2015 was not a piece of cake for me, but i did not quit because I absolutely wanted to make this wild dream come true for our lovely Madagascar. I was in the fight by myself, and to be honest, I struggled. March 2018 was memorable to me though because it was then you all came to my life. Together, we agreed to register OwC as a nonprofit, and ever since, I have felt like the burden in my back has gradually lifted because then, I was not alone anymore. Hence, our dear One Way for Change became official. 👊💪 . 2️⃣0️⃣2️⃣0️⃣ It is high time I gave the opportunity to another OwChanger to lead One Way for Change. I have faith the future president of OwC will move OwC higher. I was NOT a perfect leader. I did give so much of my time and my all in our cause because I loved everything about it, but still I messed up and I failed so many times. I am very confident our new team will nail it more than I did though so I am so excited. 🙂 . . I will not be the president of One Way for Change anymore but the OwChangers will be forever in my heart, and I will always be there by your side. You might stumble/fall on the way, but know that I will reach out my hands so that we can stand up together again as a family. I actually “listened” to this book, narrated by the author himself: Dustin Lance Black, and highly recommend you to enjoy it this way. Since it’s release last year, Mama’s Boy has become one of my favourite LGBT books. For those who don’t know Dustin Lance Black (how?), he is one of my idols and a very important gay activist. He notably was involved in putting an end to California’s proposition 8 in federal court and won an Oscar for his his screenplay MILK (which I highly recommend). He also wrote the less known “8” the play which retells the trial (go watch it on YouTube it’s brilliant and has lots of famous people). His most recent work is Mama’s Boy, a book about Lance’s mom; a southern, thrice married, Mormon polio survivor who was told she would never have kids. Best family for a gay boy to be born in... And yet, Black reveals that this environment is what shaped his entire life and made him into the activist he is today. In fact, I believe that his relationship with his mom and it’s influence on his life is one that many of us will relate to. I certainly did. This is not a book about denying and repressing one’s past. It’s about building bridges between unexpected communities, understanding each other, forging resilience and demanding for progress. All of this through story. This is something I would like to emphasise, because the power of storytelling it’s one of Black’s main message. It is the very essence of humankind and shapes every aspect of our lives. We are moved not my numbers or statistics, but deeply personal experiences. And it is our duty to share our own stories to the people around us. Dustin Lance Black sets a prime example with Mama’s boy, sharing his intimate experience not for his own sake, but for ours. This duty of storytelling is what drives me to make this page, and I hope you will learn from these books as much as I did. #lgbtq #pride2020 #lgbtliterature #mamasboy - @lgbtq.uarantine on Instagram

Filipinos protested against not receiving aid amid the pandemic, as a response, President Duterte made advancement to pass the Anti-Terrorism bill. Note, this is not only happening in the Philippines. Governments around the world are using pandemic to change laws to impede basic human rights. The Anti-terrorism bill grants the government absolute power on defining terrorism. This bill ceases the opportunity for people to participate in almost anything that can be seen or interpreted as dissent against govt. __ Anti-Terrorism bill silences dissent, violates the Philippine constitution, violates the right to privacy, & has a very vague definition of terrorism. on July 9th this bill goes into effect in the Philippines. Anyone who shows ANY form of dissent (including online) to the govt will be defined as a terrorist by law & can be legally killed. President Duterte has ordered the killings of thousands of people in the Philippine drug war (more than 20k people, at least 7k in the past six months). we cannot let our citizens at home lose their freedom of speech Repost @unccfasu Im in REAL fucking tears you guys, this means if I as an American citizen/Filipino born, post any dissent against the Philippine govt I will be considered a terrorist & will be killed on my homeland. This means I cannot visit my family & build my dream farm for us. Or worst, my family may be killed. I might be killed/jailed if i go back home just for posting this alone if this bill passes. There are Filipinos being locked up in protest to this, they dont have the ways we do in America, there are no bail bonds the way we have it here. PLEASE this is so very important & so very unseen. This anti-terrorism bill CANNOT pass. Spread the word to as many ppl as you can even if you are not Filipino. Sign the petition. Link in bio. #JUNKTERRORBILL #FILIPINOS Prayers for the Philippines. Indias National Action Plan on Climate Change was announced in a hurried manner a month before the G8 summit was to be held in July 2008 as a political move to secure international standing than anything else. The rushed manner in which NAPCC was formulated ensured that the document merely provided broad objectives and did not address strategy. Following the hurried announcement of NAPCC in 2008, the ministries concerned took six more years to approve the missions. States were also supposed to formulate State Specific Action Plans (SSAPs) to mitigate and adapt to the impacts of climate change, but no state had prepared an SSAP until late 2017. Even then, most SSAPs framed are vague. NAPCC has been slow to start and its sectoral missions are not aligned with the schemes the government has announced to tackle climate change. 12 years after it was announced, we are nowhere close to realising the targets NAPCC sought to meet. #climate #climatechange #NAPCC #climatejustice #climateemergency #transperancy #ssap - @fridaysforfuture.india on Instagram

CHRONIC PAIN AFFECTS YOUR MENTAL HEALTH! Let’s talk about how endometriosis can affect your mental health. ⚠️Medications given to those with endometriosis majorly affect your mental health. These medications can cause suicidal thoughts, depression, anxiety, and changes in those with pre-existing mental health conditions. ⚠️Symptoms of chronic pain can affect your mental health. Not being able to enjoy sex without pain, not knowing when you’ll have a flare up, not knowing if you’ll be able to conceive, and the list goes on. All of these things can cause anxiety and depression in those with chronic pain. ⚠️The journey to get diagnosed and live a life with little pain is long and difficult and this directly can weigh on your mental health. Medical professionals (& sometimes friends/family) will doubt your pain, and having someone doubt your pain is extremely difficult mentally. Having to beg for pain relief and help is extremely difficult mentally. Being in pain all the time is EXTREMELY difficult mentally. ⚠️Those with endometriosis often have multiple surgeries, which can cause SEVERE anxiety. Every time I’ve been put to sleep for surgery I have began to cry, because I’m scared that they won’t help my pain and I’m going through all of this for nothing. It is terrifying. ⚠️Endometriosis is endometrium like tissue growing where it shouldn’t and that feeds off of our hormones. So to try to manage pain, doctors will adjust these hormones which- you guessed it- affects your mental health! There are so many ways chronic pain affects someone’s mental health. So please be gentle with yourself and others. Look out for signs of depression and suicidal thoughts when trying different medications and please reach out if you need help. Prioritize taking care of your mental health endo sisters, I love each and every one of you 🧡 #endo #endosisters #endometriosis #endometriosisawareness #endosisterssociety #1in10 #mentalhealthmatters #chronicpain #chronicpainawareness #chronicillness #chronicillnessawareness #endowarrior #endofighter #selfcare #endometriosismentalhealth #chronicpainwarrior - @endostood on Instagram

Posted @withregram • @nlgmaryland This post was created for Legal Observers but can be useful for anyone witnessing an arrest at a protest (please don’t intervene during an arrest outside of a protest as these slides don’t provide all the necessary information or guidelines for that type of work). Here’s what to do if you witness an arrest at a protest: 1. Write down the name and DOB of the person being apprehended by police. This info can be provided to jail support to help locate them after they’ve been processed. 2. Ask the arresting officer(s) the reason for the arrest, continue asking if they do not respond. You can also take down the officers name and badge numbers if visible. 3. Observe and take note of any violence, excessive force, or illegal restraints by arresting officer(s). 4. If the apprehended person has someone trustworthy nearby, allow that person to collect their property (phone, keys, etc). This may speed up processing times. 5. Stay with the person being apprehended until the arrest is complete and/or they leave the area. 6. Contact @baltlegal for jail support. Last week, there was yet another instance of excessive force used by the Worcester Police. in October 2019, 24-year-old Christopher Ayala-Melendez was wrongfully accused of assaulting officer Shawn Tivnan while trying to gain access to a group of arrestees. This led to Ayala-Melendez being bitten by a K9 and then arrested right after. Now, with video footage, it was found that what actually happened fully contradicts the accusation made by Tivnan and the WPD is currently under a lawsuit for it. To get the full story; there is a link in our bio with the footage. Officer Tivnan is one of the—possibly—many police officers who have used excessive force on Worcester civilians. To get the exact number on that, we’ve made a petition calling for the WPD to release their excessive force records. We must pressure them; the link is in our bio to sign it. As of 2019, Tivnan’s gross pay was $135,059. This kind of reward is unacceptable for someone who could have ruined a person’s life had video evidence not been found. Defund the police. C A R C E R A L A B L E I S M Posted @withregram • @projectlets Psychiatric institutions are part of the carceral state and prison-industrial complex. But what does this mean? Carceral sites contain, control, and surveil people. Psychiatric institutions are sites of social control that limit peoples freedom. . . When deinstitutionalization (shutting down state asylums) happened prisons replaced the asylum as the main site to contain and control Disabled and mentally ill people. In addition to prisons, non-prison drug treatment facilities and psychiatric institutions are often as punitive as prisons- and there are many similarities in the way they are run. . . As asylums closed, the jail system increasingly absorbed people from the former mental health system. The power of involuntary commitments in current day institutions travels from doctors to police, backed by prosecutors and judges. In addition, the legal system criminalizes mental illness by making disorders or disruptions—perceived or imagined— punishable by imprisonment. . . Prisons also produce mental illness and Disability, as a result of inhumane treatment and long-term and/or solitary confinement. Deinstitutionalization was less about shutting down asylums than it was repurposing them into prisons. The story of the countrys move from asylum to prisons is one of reinstitutionalization (or transcarceration) rather than deinstitutionalization- not one of emptying institutions but shifting their function toward even more punitive ends. . . Nearly 70 mental institutions were reopened as prisons. This reconfiguration of state resources for the purposes of expanded punishment is one of the clearest indicators of how carceral power informs the logic and functioning of the (U.S.) state. . . At RJN we seek to raise awareness about race inequality and injustice by listening and working with disempowered communities to challenge and hold powers accountable. 🧐What does it mean to have a decolonial lens to education and climate change? 🤔How can we understand the impact colonialism has had and continuous to have in our everyday lives? ✊🏿✊🏾✊🏽✊🏼Through global alliances we can share learnings and resources to end racial injustices. 🇧🇷 🇰🇪 Among our international solidarities we work collaboratively with our siblings in Brazil (climate change) and Kenya (education) to explore, share and learn from each other on these experiences. 🎥Go to our Youtube channel (link in bio) to see our documentary on Decolonising Education in Kenya 2020 and a short video from our Indigenous siblings in Brazil discussing climate change and social justice. #racialjusticenetwork #13recommendation #decoloniseeducation #climatejusticeissocialjustice ALT TEXT: Image 1: Moving image of black, purple and pink squares with font reading: Addressing Colonial Legacies, Challenging Racial Injustice with RJN logo on bottom right. Even though #Disabilitypridemonth is almost at a close, we should always remember the importance of being allies for people with disabilities every day ⭐️ While some disabilities are more obvious than others, we should always be mindful to not assume a person’s impairments, and allow them to tell their story so our voices do not cloud theirs❣️ Empowering and uplifting stories from the disabled community will help us de-root ableism in our everyday lives, making sure there is always a seat at the table for those who are like us and those who are not✨ We’d like to also credit @ellierosenzweig for voicing that hard of hearing or deaf are more preferred terms for the community. A new National Agreement on Closing the Gap has been announced. This is a historic moment. It is exciting because it is the first time a national agreement about First Nations people has been made in partnership with us, through our community-controlled organisations. . In the upper caste or middle class and higher households, the sanitary napkin is wrapped and disposed off in a separate dustbin. But when it reaches the dumping ground, it is mixed with household waste and manual scavengers (usually from a so called lower caste) segregate the disposed pads with their bare hands. There have been multiple conversations around menstrual health with respect to new products, brands, hygiene, access, sustainability and affordability. However, apart from a few organisations picking up the caste narrative, there has been a very limited discourse around it in the public-corporate-government domains. Hey @ukgovofficial you can’t urge people to socialise and then get cross when they have. Of course some bellends will have flouted the rules, but you had a massive campaign urging us to enjoy summer and get back to work, eat out, help out, left leg in, left leg out. Now it’s all gone a bit Hokey Cokey, it would be totally reasonable to say, “We think we may have eased the restrictions too soon, we’re sorry and we’re rectifying it.” You don’t need to apportion blame to young people. It feels really quite muddled to be saying that 7 or more people meeting outside is an offence worthy of a fine because it’s so dangerous and yet children in bubbles of 400+ at secondary school is A-OK. What a rollercoaster, eh? I’ve got my face masks and my hand sanitiser, but does anyone know where I can get a bottle of resilience? - @rosiejohnsonillustrates on Instagram

NEW PODCAST by @distillcreative (link in bio) “This week on First Coat we have Kilia Llano, an artist based in the Dominican Republic. Kilia has done many murals around the world and for various art festivals and mural residencies including Voz de Vida in Columbia, Graniti Murales in Italy, and Beyond Walls in Massachusetts. She recently had a retrospective and is working on a community-based mural project. I spoke with Kilia about how she finally started doing murals in the street, how her Taíno and African roots influence her artwork, and what it’s like being a mom and an artist. You’ll learn about her sketchbook practice, how she works with youth to create murals, and her advice to follow your own voice.” Available in: #spotify #applepodcast #googlepodcast #tunein #stitcher #youtube Photo by @rafael_augusto_vargas Location @casadeespanard #muralart #artistpodcast #dominicanartist - @kiliallano on Instagram

It shouldn’t be considered out of the ordinary for a womxn to question male privilege. Neither should it be seen as “chaotic” or “disruptive”. It’s time for us to give a voice to the experiences, frustrations, and anger of millions of womxn who have had their days, lives, and realities shaped by often abusive, sometimes vulgar expressions of patriarchal power. ✨ Content and graphics by @aashy.kaur #internationalwomxn#storytelling#globalgirlhood#empoweredwomenempowerwomen#intersectionalfeminism#activist#womensempowerment#changemaker#youthactivism#women#motivateme#empoweredwomen#createyourlife#womensrights#womenwholift#womensupportwomen#girlbosslife#girlbossquotes#womenpower#intersectionality#intersectionalfeminist #aoc - @globalgirlhood on Instagram
