- BLACK PRIDE

The March on Washington was a peaceful protest. It got the Civil Rights Act of 1964 passed, and led to the Selma Voting Rights Movement and the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Let us *please* seek REAL justice for Floyd, and any other person who has been a victim of abuses of power. The only way to do this is by changing laws, raising money, winning the culture war and coming together as a COMMUNITY, not 🔥burning communities and inciting more hatred and violence. Violence, no matter how you attempt to justify it, only begets more violence. . This is not what “justice” looks like. Yet white kids on social media keep cheering on riots like a fashion trend for peer-group cool points, completely out of touch with real life consequences for people like this black man. Who will clean up the flaming rubble of people’s houses and POC businesses across our already divided country? We just leave the mess for our brothers and sisters to deal with, and leave many of them hospitalized? How does hurting your own team “teach the cops a lesson?” What does real change look like? Well, consider raising money for this guy (second photo) Korboi Balla on GoFundMe to pay back the damages, and volunteer to go clean all those cities. It’s the right thing to do- rather than the “trendy” thing. - @lancecourtney on Instagram

Martin Luther King Jr. had stayed up until four in the morning the night before the March on Washington, 57 years ago today. And when he finished, he still wasn’t completely satisfied with the end product. He simply ran out of time. What could one really accomplish in five minutes, the time limit for all the speakers that day? King was making his way through his speech when he heard the voice of Mahalia Jackson, the “Queen of Gospel” who had traveled around with King to sing songs in places he gave talks. Jackson had sung two spirituals that day and was no more than 10 feet away from King (circled in red) when, in the middle of the speech she yelled, “Tell them about the dream Martin!” King lit up. He knew what she meant. She was with him in various cities when he uttered the words “I Have A Dream,” with a specific phrase or two about that city. King looked up from his paper and diverted his path. “I say to you today my friends, so although we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I have a Dream.” And the rest is history. King’s tangent became the title of his speech, which was named the best speech of the 20th Century by American Rhetoric.
