I can’t express MORE that where we are as a country right now is terrifying. For years I’ve said to anyone that would listen that #Trump never had any intention of leaving office—ever. The coup that we are all concerned with happened in 2015 when he became the nominee and Republicans became filled with glee at the prospect of never ending and relentless domination over the majority. We are a party that believes in laws and rules... what happens then when we become imprisoned by the very rules we created by those who have manipulated them? What happens when the laws and rules no longer can save us? Then what? Trump is telling you in no unflinching terms that there will be a continuation of power. Mitch McConnell has said he has absolute power. WAKE UP! Democracy isn’t dying that is the trick they pulled... it died the moment Trump was let into office. We are living in an alternate reality because they never had any intention of letting go of it... just shredding our democracy until it was unrecognizable. The question we need to ask ourselves is now what? Now, that democracy is dead now what do we do? Now that they are brazenly and publicly hijacking an election and are saying they will throw out ballots now what? We need to get justice for all victims of police violence. On July 3, 2019 Rocky Boy Cree Tribal Member Stonechild “Stoney” Chiefstick was killed by the Poulsbo Police Department Officer Craig Keller. Poulsbo is a small majority white town in Kitsap County, Washington—it borders the Suquamish Indian Reservation & the Port Gamble S’Klallam Indian Reservation, and like many “border towns” has historically had many racial problems towards Native people. Stoney is a loving father and was tragically taken from his babies by law enforcement, like so many Native people before him. We’ll tell more about Stoney’s story & the investigation & the family’s pursuit of justice. As the letter from Kitsap County Prosecutor Chad M. Enright says himself about reviewing when police kill people, “the current system does not appear fair.” All in due time. I and my fellow Native attorney Gabe Galanda have been retained as Advocate and attorneyfor three of his children and their mother. We are going to do our best to ensure that this precious Native brother’s life creates change in police culture. There will be more action steps later and we will keep you informed. But what I need for folks to do right now is to contact Washington State Attorney General Bob Ferguson ( @agbobferguson ) and tell him he must review this case independently. His number is 206-464-7744 and tell them they MUST independently review Stonechild Chiefstick’s case. The Attorney General has already said it will review 30-some other cases where police killed people in 2020. Stoney can’t be “just another” Native person who killed by the police or who died a violent death. It happens way too much. Stoney’s case also can’t be overlooked simply because it happened 4 months before the end of 2019. It must be independently reviewed and you all can help. Please make sure we hold his killer accountable. All the family members, friends, allies and accomplices who contacted me and said we have to work together, I’m inviting you to work with us during this time. Thank you. If there ever was a year that tried to crush your soul this could be it but my morning super power mantras have really helped me keep the demons of doubt at bay. I even have it painted on the wall of my garden so it’s the first thing I see in the morning and the last thing I see at night. I just figure that pandemic life is going to sort itself out eventually so while I wait I need to do everything in my power to get myself ready for when the world finally Re opens. Repeating Positive affirmations may make you feel a bit silly but I figured that if I can’t say it to myself then I can’t expect other people to see it within me either. I call this stepping into my light so that when the man dem outside the corner shop call me Boss man I actually believe it. So here goes : I am strong I am powerful I am unique I am loved I am important I am needed Because I’m me And most importantly no matter what the universe will have me think I must remember at all times that I Am indeed Enough. Repeat times infinite when needed throughout the day and keep pinned above computer screen so the next time someone asks you to work for exposure and no fee you can tell them that your amazing beautiful spirit can’t feed itself on double taps, love hearts and algorithms alone. Disrespect and lack of appreciation should not be tolerated at anytime particularly during a year when your heart should be filled with as much joy as it can find. Surround yourself with a tribe that lifts you up, looks forward to seeing you and breaks out the confetti when you enter the room because your glow is so bright and your vibes are so strong. I acknowledge that the elements I had included to indicate consent are not prominent enough, and I see now how the painting could appear. I also regret referring to the okihcitâwiskwêwak in a context that could be interpreted in a disrespectful way. I will remove any further reference to them in writing for the painting. All decisions to do with this painting are my own, and I wish to categorically remove any responsibility for its content from anyone else on my team and the individuals whose likenesses appear in this work. I asked these models to assume roles for an artwork of my own making. Their likenesses in this work in no way reflects who they are or what they stand for in their real lives. I regret that by including them I have put them in harm’s way. Last week, students at the University of Glasgow’s largest halls experienced a mass coronavirus outbreak, something universities across the country had feared. When 124 students tested positive for the virus (a number thats likely risen), the university imposed an accommodation-wide lockdown, forcing over 1,000 first-year students in Murano Street Student Village to self-isolate in their first weeks living away from home. The reality of the situation for these students is dystopian. The Facebook page for Murano Street Student Village publicises events such as, “Find a Mate Whilst You Isolate. Students stick Post-It notes to their windows, messaging the outside world for more beer. This is what their university fees are paying for: to sit in a room, away from people they know, as they complete their studies entirely online. Becca Leslie is an 18-year-old student from Aberdeen studying film and TV studies at the University of Glasgow. She tells VICE News about the reality of self-isolating at Murano, which has a reputation for being party halls. “You cant really social distance in a small flat with 12 people, when youre sharing the same laundry, the same facilities,” she says. “I think we all just sort of said: ‘You know what, its all gonna spread either way, so we might as well have fun with it.’ Were dumb 17 and 18-year-olds. I dont really know what they expected to happen.” As the socialising increased, so did the police presence at the halls. “Police started patrolling around,” Leslie says. “It really did feel like a prison. It was insane. I do understand they were doing it out of concern for our safety but we really shouldnt have been here in the first place if thats what they were so worried about.” Recently Leslie’s housemates started to exhibit symptoms.
