Interesting comparison. Results show that africana’s as a whole had less conflict with LGBT demographics as they’re more comfortable with their sexuality a result of healthy masculinity. On the contrary, Jamaica’s prejudice against homosexuals and in fact also femininity isn’t something to be so proud of as a man with Jamaican descent. This comes as a result of a economic downfall and lack of jobs which stimulate the male masculine mind (being the breadwinner or feeling useful), and the devotion to religion. In 1970 there was a crash in the economy which lead to this knock on effect. Men had to express masculinity in another form thus resulting in a physical expression. Religion in Jamaica is a necessity which cant be deemed unworthy, Jamaica has the world most churches per square mile, heavily catholic which diminishes and devalues homosexuality and treats it as a sin (@chefdeemusic). The links to slavery are very strong to the hatred of homosexuals - slave masters would sometimes rape the most dominant masculine male to emasculate the man and make a mockery of his power. Bare in mind Jamaica is the third worst place in the world for homicide rates, disputes are the number one killer, not crime suggesting toxic masculinity is the leading problem in Jamaica leading to poor investment due to statistics. Obviously, these factors to me aren’t valuable reasons to treat homosexuality with such hatred, and change is being made in Jamaica. In the past week or so, so many bands I’ve followed, listened to, and even considered myself a fan of have been called out for sexual harassment, rape, and other sexually predatory behaviors, often targeting minors. It is no secret that the music industry, like the film industry and so many others, is ridden with sexual predators encouraged by a culture of misogyny and silence. @burgerrecords4life, @losgrowlers, The Buttertones, Part Time to name a few, have been accused of committing acts of sexual violence and systematic silencing, not just once but multiple times, showing a pattern of behavior that has created a sickening culture of abuse that was until recently kept in the dark. Those who grew up in the DIY hard core, emo, scremo and other music scenes know that the preying of older, predominately straight white males on younger girls is so prevalent as we saw bands like Brand New and many others being exposed within the past few years for their sick acts. THIS IS STILL HAPPENING!!! What structures are we putting in place to end this culture of violence while holding musicians, venues, and scene goers accountable? How are we protecting our youth and women in our scenes from violence and centering care for survivors in our efforts? Are you a musician or music lover and want to share your thoughts or story?
