Raising cattle is what we love, and we have been doing it for 3 generations now. Sometimes you are working with animals 10 times your size, and other times it is a newborn in need of help. Livestock requires constant attention to maintain their health. The majority of my evenings are spent doing cattle checks to make sure everyone is in good shape. Around 10 years ago we began adding some sheep to our herd to help offset the loss of income as the burley tobacco industry began to struggle. This past weekend we were pleased to work with Stride Ministries and 20 of their Airman. They dedicated an entire Saturday at the ranch. They helped to install fencing for a horse grazing pasture. They also accepted the challenge to vaccinate 10 massive pigs, all weighing well over 100lbs. That was sure an experience! Lastly, they were able to saddle up and have a good time in the arena. Hello! We are the Makar family! We are located right outside of Bunn, North Carolina. Rolling M Acres Inc. is a third generation farm. Both sides of the family were raised around cattle their whole lives. The first part of the land was bought by Harold “Cotton” and Inez Mullen in 1967. Michael Makar and Teresa Mullen got married in 1992 and had a dream and wanted to do more with the cattle so in 1996 the farm was acquired. In 2002, the farm officially became named Rolling M Acres Inc. and since then we have grown into a 250 acre farm. In 2010, we decided to start sharing our beef with the community. We strive to keep a natural environment for the cattle to live on. Our pastures are herbicide free and no artificial fertilizer are being used. The cattle are allowed to roam freely within the pastures and they have fresh drinking wells to drink out of. The Makar kids decided to take over in 2017. The number of times a day your favorite dairy brand milks its cows speaks volumes about the integrity of its operation. Organic dairy cows are required to have access to pasture for the entire grazing season. The 5 cow dairies on The Cornucopia Institute’s Organic Dairy Scorecard ensure their animals graze well-tended pasture, focusing on the health of the soil as well as the welfare of their cows. Industrialized organic dairies—most of those rated one cow on Cornucopia’s scorecard—have taken advantage of perceived loopholes in the regulations, despite the clear call from consumers for authentic organic production. These operators have cut production costs by feeding their animals in confinement, only rarely allowing the animals onto fresh grass. This uneven playing field cripples small-scale organic operations. Knowing how many times a day cows are milked offers valuable insight into their time on pasture. The standard for authentic organic dairies is once or twice daily. The process of milking a herd is time consuming: cows amble from pasture to milking barn, wait their turn to be milked, and then return to pasture. Grass-fed cows also produce less milk, the result of a diet with fewer carbohydrates than confined animals fed grain and hay in the feedlot. Larger herds require larger pastures if they are truly grazing. And larger pastures mean longer walking distances for the cows. Today’s feature @vafarmmomsarah vafarmmomsarah PART 2: My second, and most important job, is a farm mom, wife and partner. I work with our kids daily in the barn on their livestock projects because they actively show heifers, steers and market lambs across several states. I help my husband with our cattle, making hay when necessary and anything else that might need to be done. One of the things I love about living on a farm is that most days never look the same and there is typically some type of adventure right around the corner. We currently market our calves after backgrounding but have started to keep a few to finish and sell meat directly off our farm. We do supply pork and beef to a local farm stand and our kids collect eggs from 4H projects to sell there as well. The A Team! 🐴🐶 We are big on our staff wearing multiple hats (within reason - we will leave the singing to @tomcurtainofficial). This includes starting and riding young horses, setting up and packing down shows, taking horse riding lessons and experiences, taking our farm therapy sessions, performing in shows, site maintenance including fencing and cleaning, food prep/ cooking for guests, bit of admin work and even babysitting little Harry on occasions! 2020 has certainly stepped things up as we have diversified our business to focus on a more local markets. Just back from a perfect holiday in Castelmagno, visiting one of two remaining alpine producers of this unusual natural blue cheese. It was only the second make of the season, and the level of biodiversity we found in the mountain pastures was absolutely off the charts—as was, unfortunately, the associated pollen count. The herd of 24 cows, mostly Piedmontese, looked perfectly at home on the steep slopes, and we were particularly interested to witness milking in an outdoor milking bale, a real timesaver for the grazing cows, if not the milker. Most intriguing was its similarity to Bleu de Termignon, made not far away on the other side of the border with France. As Francis pointed out, it’s surely no coincidence that these naturally soured, uninoculated blue cheeses both have their curds rest for several days before being milled using a contraption like a meat grinder and curd-salted... The Castelmagno is a tamer, drier cheese than its French counterpart, but is no less exciting, particularly for fans of British cheeses who wonder what our prehistoric cheeses might have been like. State Fair number✌🏻is in the books, and we’re headed back to Nebraska for FFA and Open shows. I know it might seem strange to see a wedding photographer posting pics of sheep and pigs, but let me tell ya, there’s more similarities than you might think. My photography career actually started with livestock, and as a result, I’ve gained some unique skills! 1 - I’m comfortable with low to no light. Having spent a ton of time in barns, I’m used to using the available light to capture the best images, but I’m also not afraid to pull out my own lighting to truly make your pictures pop. 2 - I know how to quickly capture pictures. Trust me - nothing is more uncooperative than a gilt after a long show day. I’ve gained an incredible amount of patience and understanding that also translates into getting you the best family photos possible. 3 - I’m used to long days and late nights. I grew up in the barn, working on cattle and making sure they were primped to perfection from sunup to sundown. I promise I’ll be able to provide you with the best pictures all day long at your wedding!
