When leaving integrated in a modern society one have the benefit of a fairly easy access to the most basic things that, without any doubt make our lives much easier. However, at what cost? One doesnt have the luxury of enjoying a few hours relaxing, being busy between working, comutes, meetings, shopping, etc. One is hostage of the modern world. We sometimes are even afraid of being able to say we are fairly free. We decided, against family and friends pressure, to change our lifestyle and be closer to nature. We have stress and problems off course, those are always present no matter your lifestyle. Nonetheless, we have more relaxed moments than before, and than stressful ones for that matter. We have the privilege to just sit and enjoy what surrounds us. Not just going on a trip to track gorillas to snap the perfect shot and leave not even thinking. But actually to sit down with those who risk their lives to protect wildlife and learn more about the animals but also about the people that work tirelessly. Hubo un tiempo, no hace mucho, en que las comunidades de los alrededores del Parque Nacional Impenetrable de Bwindi y del Parque Nacional del Gorila de Mgahinga en Uganda eran los peores enemigos de los gorilas de montaña. Cuando los gorilas cruzaban sus jardines, los habitantes que vivían cerca de estas densas y verdes selvas tropicales hacían sonar una alarma para enfrentarse a los animales, que eran vistos como una amenaza. Compartimos el #comunicado emitido por nuestros compañeros del @zoo_aquarium_madrid en relación al #accidente ocurrido esta mañana en su instalación de #gorilas. Deseamos de todo corazón la pronta recuperación de la cuidadora. “Los hechos se han producido esta mañana, en torno a las 10 h., cuando una cuidadora con 19 años de experiencia en el Zoo, accedió a las instalaciones interiores para la rutina habitual de desayunos, limpieza y preparación de las instalaciones. Al entrar en una zona acotada con triple puerta, la cuidadora se encontró con Malabo, un gorila macho de 29 años, que había accedido a la misma. Los motivos por los que el animal pudo acceder a la zona se están investigando internamente, no obstante, la investigación judicial determinará exactamente los detalles. Subrayar que esta zona interior es de manejo, sin salida a zona de público y en este sentido, el protocolo de emergencia se activó rápidamente avisando al Samur y a la Policía municipal. El equipo del Zoo consiguió apartar al animal y posteriormente, el equipo veterinario anestesió con un dardo tranquilizante al ejemplar que fue trasladado a su dormitorio interior y en estos momentos, se encuentra tranquilo. Señalar que Malabo ha sido criado por sus cuidadores desde que nació con un comportamiento protector con el grupo y cercano a sus cuidadores. En estos momentos, la cuidadora se encuentra con pronóstico reservado y lo primero es desear su pronta recuperación. Cultivating the emotional life “The most important thing in life is to learn how to give out love, and to let it come in.” - Morrie Schwartz Love is vitally important in building our bodies and allowing our lives to have the highest degree of satisfaction and fulfillment. We think that we have to make something happen in this life or something must interact with us in order for us to be moved to feel any of the feelings we feel. Most of us just wait for good things to happen so that we can feel good. And we wait for loving things to happen so that we can feel love. We really dont need to ever wait. We were born to feel exactly what we choose to! The complete truth is we cultivate and nurture all the feelings that come to the surface in our lives. We are the ones responsible for how we feel in each moment. There is no one who inserts feelings into us, or extracts them from us. All of the reasons that we give for our feelings are simply the excuses we allow ourselves to feel and express all that we do. But these feelings always come from within, never from outside of us. We have to lean toward any feelings and give it energy in order for it to gain enough momentum to allow us to feel anything strongly. When I awake each morning, I actively tell myself what kind of wonderful day I am going to have. No matter how I feel, I push all that aside and I intentionally tell myself I wonder what kind of awesome day am I going to have today? This helps me set the stage to actively look for what I want in my day. It literally tells my brain to be on the look out for good stuff! A wonderfully loving life happens because we decide to take the kind of stance in life that allows love indiscriminately. And when you add it up, if the preponderance of experiences that we have are colored with love and joyful feelings then we can easily feel that we have a loving and joyful life. You are in control of how you feel, because you control your focus of attention and the thoughts you think. I am love. I am joy. I am so very good. Oh and yes... Gladys Kalema-Zikusoka was Uganda’s first wildlife vet and, since winning her Whitley Gold Award and multiple rounds of Continuation Funding, she has become an internationally important conservationist. Gladys and her NGO, @ctph_uganda, protect the health of mountain gorillas and the people with whom they share space, resources and 98% of their DNA. For over 20 years she has prevented the transmission of zoonotic diseases between these two species, with COVID-19 being just the latest in a string of challenges she has risen to. Its #WorldGorillaDay, and were celebrating with Mbeli, Kali and Gunther, who joined us earlier this year at the recommendation of @zoos_aquariums Gorilla Species Survival Plan. Keepers will tell you that each boy is unique in his own way. Where Gunther is the most playful and can often be seen playing with his bedding, Kal is calm and patient. As for Mbeli, he’s all about the snacks, and gives us the loudest vocalizations, a gorilla grumble (like a cat purring) when food is on the way. “The three bachelors in Denver Zoos new gorilla troop are old enough to leave their natal group but not necessarily have their own troop, which can be a challenging situation for many AZA-accredited facilities to manage. This is a natural event for this species to have males disperse and form all male troops until they find their own family group,” said Brian Aucone, Senior Vice President for Animal Care. “Our Great Apes habitat, combined with our animal care teams experience and expertise will allow us to support the species by providing a comfortable home for this new troop of gorillas.” Western lowland gorillas are listed as critically endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. Their primary threats include logging, agriculture and poaching through their native ranges in Nigeria, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon and Congo. Today is #WorldGorillaDay! Here at the Saint Louis Zoo we love our group of bachelor gorillas! We have four Western lowland gorilla males, Jontu, Joe, Nadaya and Bakari. Although large and very strong, gorillas in general are peaceful animals. Our gorilla group typically spends their day eating, foraging, using enrichment, resting, building nests to sleep in and sometimes even playing with each other! Unfortunately, gorillas in the wild are facing more hardship. Habitat destruction, poaching, and disease have really taken a toll on the population numbers. The Saint Louis Zoo has made it a mission to help the conservation of gorillas in the wild. The Saint Louis Zoo Wildcare Institute Center for the Conservation of Congo Apes partners with the Goualougo Triangle Ape Project (GTAP). GTAP not only does great research in learning more about these wild counterparts, but also makes great efforts to keep these populations safe and healthy. Joe (22) – Joe is really smart and a great tool user. Joe and the other gorillas will find sticks to use to help them pull food out of a tricky enrichment feeder. Nadaya (19) – Nadaya loves to eat browse that our Animal Nutrition Team and Horticulture team bring for the gorillas. The gorillas love mulberry and ash! They have powerful jaws to help chew through these plants Bakari (15) – Bakari is an excellent nest builder! Gorillas build nests to sleep in each night. This is Tinfayo, the lead (and only) silverback of Mishaya group in Bwindi. On Sept. 24th, he was reported missing from the group & the following morning trackers found him severely injured. Dr. Ricky rushed out to conduct a visual health assessment and found Tinfayo with several deep cuts on his face, neck, shoulders & hands, most likely the result of fighting with another silverback. Despite heavy rain, Dr. Ricky was able to successfully administer antibiotics & pain medication via dart. Two days post-treatment, Tinfayo was feeding and moving around. And on Monday, Dr. Ricky observed Tinfayo doing significantly better, moving a great distance to rejoin the group. Tinfayo means I dont care and his name was very fitting when he rejoined the group - while the females displayed with excitement, Tinfayo seemed indifferent. 😆🦍 We will keep you posted on his healing progress. #WorldGorillaDay Good news from Rwanda, one of the stops on next years Wildlife Safari by Private Jet: Results of the Virunga Mountain Gorilla census show an increase in the gorilla population: 604 – which is up from 480 individuals in 2010. The results show that the world’s total population of Mountain Gorillas has surpassed the 1000 mark! Today is World Gorilla Day, an opportunity to shine a light on these gentle giants and the importance of their conservation. Unable to survive in captivity, the only way for mountain gorillas to avoid extinction is to ensure that they have a safe, spacious habitat in which to roam. Singitas top priority in Rwanda is to assist in the expansion of Volcanoes National Park by undertaking the reforestation of the land surrounding the protected area. The 178-acre piece of land on which Singita Kwitonda Lodge and Kataza House can be found is directly adjacent to the Park, and it is hoped that it will one merge seamlessly into their current habitat. The reforestation of Singita Volcanoes National Park has already found great success, with camera traps near the unfenced border between the protected area and the land surrounding the lodge capturing all manner of curious wildlife crossing into the property. Happy International Primate Day!!! Primates have been around for 50-55 million years. The first monkeys evolved approximately 35 million years ago and apes 23 million years ago. To put that in perspective, Homo Sapiens evolved from their early Hominid predecessors between 200,000-300,000 years ago! The first modern humans began living outside Africa 70,000-100,000 years ago. If that doesn’t make you feel small in the scale of time, and that we are merely a drop in the bucket in the history of the planet, I don’t know what will! Mountain gorilla - Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. . . It had always been a dream of mine to visit Bwindi, the name alone evoked such a sense of adventure and the unknown for me and so to have the chance to set foot in the national park was an experience I’ll never forget and one that was deeply moving for me, being able to see mountain gorillas in the wild was just so special what an absolute privilege it is to share the world with such an array of beautiful life, I never feel more enlivened and enriched than when surrounded by nature, what a place this world is!! . . This blackback is around 10 years old and his hair will gradually turn to silver over the next few years, it’s likely depending on the group structure that he will not mate until he’s 15-20 years coupled with a gestation period of 8.5 months, an approximate 4 year birth interval and you have really slow population growth. Today is World Gorilla Day. Anyone who has ever spent time with mountain gorillas will know what I mean when I say they look at you with the most human eyes. There is no doubting their intelligence, these animals live full emotional lives with social contracts within their troops not unsimilar to humans. Contrary to Hollywood mythology, they are gentle and gracious, often hilarious to be around and uncannily familiar in a way that you just can’t place until you remember they are second only to Chimps in their DNA similarity to ourselves. That said, coming through thick vegetation and finding yourself face to face with a dominant Silverback can be an unforgettable albeit unnerving experience. There is no hesitation in the way he sizes you up, knowing immediately that without a gun, you are something far weaker. As he haughtily breezes past you, you find yourself holding your breath, only noticing you’re doing that when he is at a safer distance. You’re in the presence of an elite, alpha animal, up there with any other apex creature. A small number of silverbacks can be aggressive, but the majority conduct their business with a knowing certainty that you are in their world and that the briefest swat will send any man flying. You are more likely to hear contented belching than aggressive screaming. These majestic animals are a privilege to be around. I think the best gorilla viewing in the world is Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It’s also the cheapest and you get to support rangers who have paid the heaviest dues. Today is World Gorilla Day 🦍 . In the 1980s, on the brink of extinction, only 242 mountain gorillas were left around the Virunga mountains. Today, over 600 individuals call these mountains home and together with Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable Forest population, mountain gorilla numbers have surpassed 1,000 individuals for the first time in almost a century and the IUCN reclassified the species from critically endangered to endangered in 2018. . - The eastern gorilla is the largest primate, & can weigh 450lbs+. They have massive builds with enormous strength, which they use to forage on strong plants, plow through the dense forest, and dominate opposition. These mountain gorillas are adapted to high altitudes, with a thick coat.
The Zoo is home to 8 Critically Endangered western lowland gorillas, including HJ, the latest addition to our bachelor group, and baby Angela, who lives with her mother, father, and aunties in our family group. In Africa, gorilla habitat is being destroyed by unsustainable mining for coltan, a mineral used in the manufacture of handheld electronic devices. Recycling electronics responsibly decreases the demand for coltan, thereby reducing mining and keeping toxins out of the environment. When you recycle handheld electronics through our partner ECO-CELL at the L.A. Zoo, a portion of the proceeds go to conservation nonprofits such as Gorilla Rehabilitation and Conservation Education (GRACE), which works to safeguard the Grauer’s gorilla, one of the most endangered primates on the planet.
