We miss you. So much. We miss the smell of coffee from @broadporchcoffeeco, the conversations with customers and other shop owners in @agoradowntownmarkethburg, kids running up and down the aisles, and actually having some sort of schedule every day. I have not been very active on here lately, because I really dont even know what to say. Its hard for me to try to sell products and ask for your money, when I know so many are struggling right now. Im also having a hard time feeling like my business is relevant right now. Bulk bins at our local grocery store are closed, most places arent allowing customers to use their own reusable bags, the use of single use disposable products are at an all time high, and Im feeling a little bit defeated. What can we do during this time and moving forward to make a positive impact? One thing I did the other day was create a dog poop composter in my backyard! Im loving not using plastic bags for dog poop, and I cant believe I didnt do it earlier. After months of having our indoor garden center closed to the public (and nearly empty), we are extremely excited to share with it with you all, filled with display after display of new Pottery! Along with all of our seasonal plants and decor located inside and outside. We will continue to have a checkout register located at our front double doors for outside only purchases, as well as a register located inside the garden center. Customers will enter through Greenhouse #3 (Houseplants), into the Garden Center, than exit through the front side door. Our Florist/Gift Shop will continue to be open as well, with access to the Garden Center. It’s our 1 year year anniversary of having a shop front + office outside of our home! A special thank you to @openmarketoc for giving us this opportunity. Also wouldn’t have been able to do any of this without Mama Panduh @essentiallyree supporting me through everything!! Swipe to see what the shop looked like on the first day we got our shop! I thought I would go down memory lane and show you all of Paper Panduh’s offices. 2014 - I started this business in my bedroom at my parents house! 2015 - I moved it to Mister Panduh’s apartment living room 2016 - We moved into our first apartment together and was able to afford a second bedroom! 2019 - Moved into our FIRST office outside of our home + rented a space for our first little shop front where we have expanded 3 times since then! With cold weather approaching (sigh) and being indoors more, I decided it would be a good idea to offer some of my paintings as downloadable colouring sheets! 🎨 My vision as an artist is to help others be creative and find inspiration, and I hope these colouring sheets do this. There are only a few illustrations for now, but I will be adding more in the following weeks. For only $5, you will get two .png images - one of dark lines (2nd image) for colouring in, and another of light lines (3rd image) if you wanted to practice your urban sketching by tracing. The light version can also be printed on watercolour paper, so you can practice your watercolour + tracing as well! PLEASE READ: So...we had a Covid scare here. I was able to get a rapid test because of my already high-risk pregnancy (it was negative!!!) but am still waiting on the test results for the rest of my family (which makes for an awkward quarantine situation) but this scare has been so close to home and it brought some things to light: -very soon this is not going to just be something you hear about. You’ll have friends or family who get it, you’ll have close calls, it might even hit your home. Wisconsin is exploding with cases right now & all I heard as I called around to testing sites today was that each place was reporting record high positive results and they had seen more cases this week than ever before. I was also told repeatedly that more and more people testing positive had no idea how they got it. As always, the shop is an extension of myself & my life and just as we are editing things in our household-I’m editing shop life too. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR YOU? ✨First: we are cancelling shop by appointment. I know there are already those of you who signed up (you’ll be refunded) and I was really looking forward to this but, it seems like exactly the wrong time to expand our exposure. ✨We’ll be shutting down our pick up window earlier than expected. I’m taking pick up off the website on Monday (so if you want to place an order for pick up, do it now) and if you have an order to pick up-grab it by the 15th! ✨Starting the 15th we’ll expand our delivery window and add on Saturday delivery. ✨I am working on a plan to translate physical gift cards to online use but we encourage you to cash them in at the pick up window before the 15th ❤️ I’m not sure what this means for holiday shopping yet, but it is more important to me to protect my crew right now (and you!) than to increase profit. Last night the hubby, the baby boy, and I headed down to Provo to set up our booth for @beehivebazaar which starts today! We are so excited for this week! Extra bonus, we went to dinner after and got back kind of late for baby’s bedtime, putting him down at about 9 when his usual bedtime is 7 and he sleeps for 12-13 hours. My neighbor • So, a few weeks ago I met someone. I was moving my pieces into @adoreboutiquecollective at @theforumcarlsbad and she came in for her appointment. She was going to sign her contract and she brought in some if her product. • @sweetspottoffee gave us a taste and as I swallowed the deliciousness, I looked over at the store owner and said “F#@& that’s good!” • Oopsie. That was not my intention, but the truth is the truth. As the toffee was being packed up, she handed me a box and said ‘that’s for throwing a f-bomb right at me’. • Moral of the story..... it pays to be honest! With a heavy heart, we’ve closed our New York shop. “The Meadow” lettering on the window is made with 24k lemon and orange gold leaf. The flowers are copper. We scoured Amish country to reclaim old barn timbers of hemlock and yellow pine cut 200 years ago from a primeval forest. I toiled for four months to reveal, repair, and enhance the character of a tiny shop in a landmark building. We’ve given our employees healthcare, 401k, vacation, a place to be real. We’ve donated tens of thousands to our community. The dream was to serve a neighborhood for generations. So tearing down this labor of love is painful. Saying farewells to the hundreds of you who have stopped by in the last days is sad. And yet, I can’t even begin to express how much joy this shop has brought me, my family, and our employees for over 10 years! This may sound absurd to you in an age of mega-corporations that view vendors as resources to be exploited, customers as data to be optimized, and profit as lucre to be siphoned out of neighborhoods and into hedge funds--but believe this if you take anything away from our years together: We love you, truly. The last few months have been tough for Fowey’s traders but there has been some fabulous innovation and adaptation and even some brand new businesses. The first in our series is @heatherjaneandco Read on to find out more. .................................................................... Heather Jane & Co is a new business venture set up by husband and wife Heather and Steve Bowyer. All items in the shop are designed and made by independent south west based craft makers. We have 31 different crafters mostly Cornish. Steve is the former Head of RHS Garden Rosemoor and Heather a former florist and visual merchandiser. We took the keys to the shop at the beginning of March and fitted it out during lockdown. We were eventually able to open on 15th June and are very pleased with the response from the customers to date.
