We rarely post about the donations we make. We don’t want it to look like a performative marketing tactic. We have been donating meals at least twice a week for about 6 months now. Today we are telling you for two reasons: 1.) You should know which issues that a business you give money to (that’s us) cares about and actively supports. 2.) We want to encourage you to do the same! If you’re feeling helpless today but can’t actively protest on the street, there are things you can do. We were super excited to try West Side Creamery (@westside_creamery ) this weekend and ran over there after lunch at TrueWest brewery (@brewtruewest ). We got their flavor of the month, Bourbon Praline (vanilla bourbon ice cream, pecans and praline swirl), Cookie Monster (vanilla ice cream with crushed chips ahoy cookies), and their most popular flavor, Green Monster (mint ice cream with chocolate chunks, Oreo cookies, and a fudge swirl). We loved every bite! The ice cream here is super premium, lots of fun flavor choices, and the and the flavors are all truly delicious. There’s some indoor seating and space outside, plus there’s a playground right across the street for the kids to run off the sugar. With a heavy heart, we’ve closed our New York shop. “The Meadow” lettering on the window is made with 24k lemon and orange gold leaf. The flowers are copper. We scoured Amish country to reclaim old barn timbers of hemlock and yellow pine cut 200 years ago from a primeval forest. I toiled for four months to reveal, repair, and enhance the character of a tiny shop in a landmark building. We’ve given our employees healthcare, 401k, vacation, a place to be real. We’ve donated tens of thousands to our community. The dream was to serve a neighborhood for generations. So tearing down this labor of love is painful. Saying farewells to the hundreds of you who have stopped by in the last days is sad. And yet, I can’t even begin to express how much joy this shop has brought me, my family, and our employees for over 10 years! This may sound absurd to you in an age of mega-corporations that view vendors as resources to be exploited, customers as data to be optimized, and profit as lucre to be siphoned out of neighborhoods and into hedge funds--but believe this if you take anything away from our years together: We love you, truly. Ive had this place on my radar forever but have never gone. Conveniently near New Westminster skytrain station it offers all sorts of vegan Vietnamese food. I just put some banana bread in the oven and I’ve got time to kill, so I am here to offer up a bunch of information that nobody asked for (which is very ME). Philadelphia will be opening up for indoor dining on September 8th, but we will not be participating. The main reason being that none of us feel safe or comfortable with the idea of having unmasked diners in the restaurant. Kate and I made the decision months ago with our staff that until there are virtually no cases, or a vaccine that is widely available, we will not be allowing customers inside. That should be reason enough, but if not- restaurants are only allowed 25 percent occupancy, 4 diners to a table, and 6 feet of space in between each table. For us, that means we could only seat 2 tables at a time. IF we were business minded people who cared only about money, it still wouldn’t make sense for us to open for dine in. We are able to feed more people continuing on the path we have been on of take out only. We want nothing more than to be able to have you all sitting at the counter and at our tables, hanging out, eating and having a great time. Now is just not the time for it. We are so lucky to have the support that we have in this community, and to have regulars that we really can’t wait to see each week. I got a chance to chat with owner, Poreyah Benton, about her backstory, vegan cuisine, and the restaurants future. Offering vegan comfort food in the New Haven area since last November, the food truck has developed a large fan base among many diets. “I have a lot of customers who aren’t vegan actually and they still like to support,” Benton says. Benton has been a vegan all her life growing up in Dimona, Israel where she was part of an African Hebrew Israelite community. A community of 4,000 that has actually been vegan for 50 years. She recalls learning to cook at the age of six and loving it ever since. I got into the food truck business recently as I was looking for something new to do that could make me good money, offer me the chance to work for myself, & tap into some of the experiences Ive gained while working in various industries. Originally I was thinking about a cinema pub & was going to name it Georges Reel Brews, but redirected my energies to a food truck as I had some prior restaurant experience & the start-up process was easier with a truck. I looked around Portland and realized that no one had a good, solid North Shore Mass roast beef truck, & I was also sick of driving home to get one... Im from the north shore... so that was the motivation behind the truck. & George is my dog, his name was going to be in whatever I tried! So far every day has been an adventure... lots of challenges you dont think about. Veg news 2nd September  Organic Pantry near Tadcaster in Yorkshire was established by Johnnie and his wife Fanny over 20 years ago. They pack a lot into the function of their farm, running a wholesale business, farm shop and box scheme on top of the produce they grow on site. We’ve been buying direct from them for several years and the quality of their veg goes from strength to strength.  We have plenty of sweetcorn from them available this week, as well as french beans, kales, potatoes and some AMAZING radicchio lettuces too. On a visit to their lovely farm last year, our buyers were blown away by the abundance of wildlife to be found in the fields - butterflies, bees, partridges, pheasants and birds of prey were all spotted amongst the crops, one of the many benefits of growing organically and a great indication of biodiversity.  Autumnal lines continue to creep in elsewhere across the range - even more squash varieties are available this week with Crown Prince, Acorn and Green Pumpkins as well as the first Conference pears and local Bramley apples from Glebelands City Growers.  Soft herbs are proving tricky to find at the moment, expect a few gaps on coriander and mint. Basil is all but finished for the year too, there’ll be the last few bunches from Ward and Thompson for a lucky few.  French Bourjassotte figs are tasting gorgeous at the moment; not just for puds or breakfast, we love a fig in a savoury setting too! This has been a revealing time for so many of us. It’s proof of the work that needs to be done, the labor of resistance is never ending and we have to all do our part to continue to dismantle white supremacy. Meet Sergio Capdevielle of Folklore Artisanal Taco! @folkloretaco , like many Chatham businesses, has faced many challenges since COVID hit. They have worked hard to maintain their staff, and their employees have had to come up to speed quickly regarding strict sanitary requirements. Due to shortages with local suppliers, it has been challenging to obtain high quality products and keep fresh products in stock, but thankfully they have been able to do so. They also made an effort to improve their delivery service to keep up with the needs of the Chatham community. Despite all of these obstacles that have transpired during these trying times, they have managed to deliver the same high quality food and service their customers are used to. Sergio is hopeful for the future and is looking forward to life after the pandemic. “We want to remain hardworking as that always makes us very proud of our restaurant and our culture. We look forward to welcoming back all of our customers (with much love)! Chatham is such a caring community. It has really embraced the businesses, old and new. The people are welcoming and friendly. Dear friends, Change is upon us. The weather is cooling. The leaves are turning. The sun is hanging lower in the sky. As someone closely connected to nature, I’m very in tune to the changing seasons. Animals instinctively transition from season to season. For us humans, its a bit more complicated. Change also makes way for new opportunities. A client came in today. She said, “The pandemic forced me to give up all of these things I thought I needed. Now that Ive gone without them, Im starting to realize that I never needed some of them at all. Weve spent years filling our lives with things because we were told to, or felt we needed to. Then we had something I like to call a forced reset. A little bug came out of nowhere and forced us to strip everything down to the frame. Now we can choose which things to let back in. We have the power to change our lives. And then there are times when life changes for us. This week I got two unexpected visitors at work. I was helping load up one of the vans when suddenly a car pulled up. It was my wife Asya, and my youngest son, Charlie. He was crying. This week CT enacted a new requirement that children 3 years+ must wear masks in school. Weve been working with Charlie to prepare him, and he has been struggling with the transition. I picked him up and said, “Buddy, change is hard. But masks keep us safe. Did you know that daddy wears a mask all day long? Now youre a big boy, just like daddy! He started smiling at me, and we shared a moment together. That night before bed we took out our doctor set and played a game. I told Charlie doctors wear masks all day too. So Charlie put on his mask, took out his stethoscope and gave me a check up. I kept calling him Dr. Charlie. The next morning, as soon as he was dressed for school Charlie put his mask on all by himself. Asya said, “You must be so excited to be a big boy like daddy and wear your mask! To which he replied, “Im not daddy. Im Dr. Charlie. And I wear my mask all day long!
