Today Im reflecting on my life in the past year to now. Remembering why I am thankful and what has brought me here. The challenges and mentally hard times. 10 months ago I broke my elbow, spent 2 months on disability, only to be offered the opportunity of a lifetime and made the best decision of our lives to be where we are right here in Florida with sharks. Tanner and I spent many nights drinking tea manifesting our future to exactly where we are now. Crazy as some may think I absolutely believe this journey is from our inability to believe we would stay where we were working the jobs we had. Just the time we took to remember we were grateful for what we had for the friends and family we had and where we wanted to be lead us to where we are now. So remember to take time to stay grateful and thankful for life’s journey wherever you may be in that journey the universe will make your wildest dreams come true if you believe and work hard ✨ . Pic & caption by @mikecoots In the years after the shark attack, I was fascinated and intrigued why sharks attack people. I read and reread shark attack files, books on shark attacks. Anything I could digest on why I was chosen to be bitten. Then one day I got a call from a fellow shark attack survivor Debbie. She had asked if I had seen Sharkwater, a film by Rob Stewart on the fateful demise of global shark populations. I was beyond baffled. None of these shark attack books talked about the real dangers in the oceans - humans. The film blew my mind, and it was that day I knew I needed to help speak up for sharks. Robs gift of storytelling and passion for our oceans has helped bring light to a often dark subject. Through the years, I have met many who worked production on Sharkwater, and it was a personal goal to meet Rob and thank him. These last few weeks, I spoke to a couple people close to him and said if you see Rob let him know his film changed my life. I cant believe you passed away this week. Although we never met, you are my hero. You left doing the work you were put on Earth to do. With camera in hand, and a passion to tell the story that needs to be told. 🙏 - @sharks on Instagram

And I love watching and learning about sharks!   .  But I don’t like how some of the shows promote the idea that sharks are brutal killing machines, including attacking humans. Sharks don’t mindlessly attack humans - it is US attacking THEM. #DidYouKnow Hammerhead sharks can get a suntan just like us humans? It’s true! A study conducted by the CSULB lab in California revealed that scalloped hammerhead sharks (Sphyrna lewini) have the ability to darken in color (from a light tan to a dark brown) when exposed to solar radiation. In the wild, pups are lighter in color because they take refuge in the murky waters of the bay in avoidance of getting eaten by other adult sharks. The Kristin Jacobs Ocean Conservation Act (SB680) is now law in the Sunshine State, what will soon be known as the previous hub of the fin trade for the United States. This was no easy feat, to say the least, 2 years of sweat, tears and a couple drops of blood. The journey was filled with tough hurdles and strong opposition, there was not a single easy day in this campaign. But all of us persisted and with this we have proven, once again, that we can succeed if we persist. When we started this campaign we were told that it couldn’t be done in Florida, that there was no point in trying. Well, sometimes it is the toughest fights we have to tackle, just because they usually are the most important ones. When we put our collective power behind an effort, we can do the (nearly) impossible.⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ We cannot thank our Allies enough, you spoke up for sharks every single time we said go! There is an art to chumming for sharks in the ocean. @pelagicsafari is one of the best, and shared great knowledge while showing us how it’s done right: One of the most important aspects for an in-water encounter is to make sure that only fish blood and oil is released into the water, and there is nothing the shark can actually eat or taste. The scent of the fish blood and oil will lure the shark from miles away, but making sure the shark cannot taste anything is essential for keeping the shark calm during an in-water encounter. Shark finning is one of the world’s most destructive fishing practices. According to the Hong Kong Shark Foundation, more than 100 million sharks are caught worldwide every year for their fins and other products, while more than 50% of the world’s shark fin is traded through Hong Kong alone. Now, a new study by researchers at the Florida International University (FIU) has found that much of the shark fin sold in Hong Kong contained unsafe levels of mercury, exceeding government limits. “The mercury levels are, on average, six to 10 times higher than what is considered a safe level of mercury,” says FIU student marine biologist Laura Garcia Barcia, one of the study’s co-authors. As of yesterday Florida became the 15th state in America to ban the import and export of Shark fins!! The new law prohibits the import, export and sale of shark fins in Florida. Violators could be charged with a misdemeanor, and face a fine of up to $9,500 for repeat violations and license suspension or revocation. Shark fins are used to make soup which is popular in China. Today marks the first community research dive of our long term collaboration with @asc_sharkstudies and @finalliance !!! We’re so stoked on the technology and research we are actively participating in! The research being conducted aims to record the diversity, abundance, and distribution of sharks over time and space using a modified Underwater Visual Census (UVC) method. We record data on the environmental conditions like water temperature and current speed, and once in the water, we will be using a camera with paired lasers to capture images of each shark. The lasers are a known distance apart and will show up on the image as two green dots so when the image is analyzed, ASC scientists can get an accurate total length measurement of the sharks, which also helps to determine their age. You will spend the day with members of the ASC research team, helping collect and log data points, and capturing images of the sharks themselves. - @sharkaddictsdiving on Instagram

🦈DEBATE TIME🦈 Cool or negative? Join the debate. Our observations... We always criticize how our society has contributed to the negative portrayal of sharks. Starting with the obvious Jaws movie, continuing with shark encounters, with surfers and finishing with the classic biting shark image we all have in mind from cage diving (we dont really know how to categorize this experience BTW). On the other hand, there is a whole diving community, that admires these creatures and tries to educate students and fellow divers about not only their importance to the ecosystem but the mistaken image they have so unwillingly earned. 🦈 BUT... Here we go... 🦈 What about those funny shark costumes and accessories that feed off that exact negative shark image? You know what we mean, right? The shark sleeping bag, shark slippers, the jaws costume (the one that looks like you are being eaten by Jaws himself), or those funky wine glasses with the shark fins rising from the inside (of course the redder the wine, the better)...  We might find these personally cute or funny, however, isnt it a bit contradictory we find these products cute or funny, even though we, as dive professionals, understand they represent and foment an exaggerated or even an unreal image of sharks? We would love to hear your thoughts on the matter, and please dont get us wrong, we are not trying to offend anybody here. I have spent the last few days really thinking about #sharkweek. I love it, don’t get me wrong. But it is missing something.     I looked it up and last year, 35 million people watched Shark Week! After a week of celebrating these amazing animals, wouldn’t it be great if the last episode was a list of things all 35 million people can do to save our sharks?    Sharks are in real trouble. They are being overfished, mutilated for their fins, poisoned, hunted to extinction, and caught as bycatch. Shark is in our pet’s food and in our makeup. We are taking their habitat, warming their waters, and polluting it with our trash.     @discovery - You have such a big audience. Next year, can we end Shark Week with a whole episode that is a call to action? A call for conservation. Protection. Respect. For our oceans and our sharks. There are so many shark conservationists doing critical shark saving work - please consider giving them the platform they need to help us help our sharks.     I am only 8. As Shark Week comes to a close, let’s keep the momentum going by raising awareness on the horrific act of shark finning. Did you know almost 100 million sharks are killed each year in the cruelest of ways? Their dorsal fin is cut off while the shark is alive and then thrown back in the ocean to bleed to death and drown. Why would anyone want to participate in such a barbaric act? For shark fin soup! It is a delicacy to some. The tradition and illegal shark finning must stop. It doesn’t even add flavor to the soup, just texture and status. A bowl of shark fin soup can run $100. Thirteen US states have bans on shark fins and a federal bill is in the Senate after passing the full House. Let’s support regulation, shark fin trade and overfishing. At this rate in 10 years many sharks will be extinct. Please help me raise awareness by sharing this post and signing this petition. Link in bio! Todays #SaturdaySpotlight goes to our sandtiger shark, Swaj! 🦈 Swaj is the only sandtiger shark we currently have in our larger Shark Exhibit. This exhibit is the largest one in the aquarium, holding 58,000 gallons of water and various species of shark and bony fish. Swaj arrived at the aquarium in May of 2004 from Long Island Aquarium. At that time he was only around 46 inches long and 18 lbs 👶🏻Now hes almost 6.5 feet long and over 150 lbs! Swaj is the slowest swimming shark in the exhibit. He likes to take his time with everything and is the most courteous shark we have. He definitely doesnt live up to his name, which is Jaws spelt backwards. Swaj and Luseal, as well as some of our other animals, are all available for adoption through our Adopt-an-Animal program. As summer comes to an end, we’re trying to squeeze in some last minute fun by heading to the zoo & aquarium. Happy shark awareness day! The 14th of July is a special day dedicated to raising awareness for the plight of sharks around the world. We also celebrate the JAWESOMENESS of these incredible oceanic predators! Did you know that sharks also do their bit to control the threat of global warming? They do more than most as they are biologically charged with keeping prey populations in check. For example, they feed on animals such as sea turtles, who consume huge amounts of sea grass. Sea grass stores large amounts of carbon from the atmosphere. But when the turtles population expands at an unsustainable rate, this essential carbon storage is threatened. Sharks, the sea turtles natural predators, are the only ones that can keep this in check. That small smile to a stranger, that morning hello, these all empower and lift people. We need to hold space for one another to acknowledge I see you. I don’t know your journey, or your path. I don’t know what you’re going through. But I see you. Covid has been a wonderful teacher. It’s taught us to be slow and gentle with ourselves, but it’s also been isolating. Incredibly isolating for those who are already isolated. It’s made the vulnerable more vulnerable. It’s made us scared of one another, judgemental and hold back. We need to remember that all of us are here on our journey doing the best we can with what we have. Smile and hold space each other. Some time ago I got to look deep into this beautiful creatures eyes and hold its space. I held its hurt, and I held its sorrow. A healthy magical creature should not end up victim to game fishing for human pleasure. We have lost touch with ourselves and with how closely our actions cause big and endless repercussions. Happy Sharkweek! 🦈 Great hammerheads are vulnerable to overfishing. They are caught incidentally and commercially targeted for their valuable fins in longline, bottom trawl, gillnet and hook-and-line fisheries. Great hammerheads are particularly threatened by the global shark fin trade because of the large size of their fins. More than 90 percent of great hammerheads die once they are captured by targeted or incidental fisheries. This high mortality rate, along with the shark’s coastal habitat and highly valued fin, makes the great hammerhead shark endangered with extinction. It’s time to celebrate, Florida is officially the 15th state to ban the shark fin trade! The Kristin Jacobs Ocean Conservation Act (SB680) is now law in the Sunshine State, what will soon be known as the previous hub of the fin trade for the United States. This was no easy feat, to say the least, 2 years of sweat, tears and a couple drops of blood. The journey was filled with tough hurdles and strong opposition, there was not a single easy day in this campaign. But all of us persisted and with this we have proven, once again, that we can succeed if we persist. When we started this campaign we were told that it couldn’t be done in Florida, that there was no point in trying. Well, sometimes it is the toughest fights we have to tackle, just because they usually are the most important ones. When we put our collective power behind an effort, we can do the (nearly) impossible.⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ We cannot thank our Allies enough, you spoke up for sharks every single time we said go! Heard that there were a couple of Grey Nurse sharks hanging round the bay so had to jump in and have a look around. Every single time that theyve been around they always manage to elude me, except for this time. Jumped in the water swam out about 50 metres and stumbled across a juvenile straight away. Taiwan bans fishing the giant Megamouth shark, Great White and Basking sharks. Since the Megamouth shark was discovered and named in 1976, only 226 have been recorded around the world as of June 17 this year — 146 of which were caught in Taiwan.    The fishing ban also includes the Great White shark and Basking shark. Taiwan Fisheries made the announcement July 15, in an effort to preserve biodiversity in the waters of Taiwan. The ban is set to apply to all Taiwanese fishing boats, no matter where they fish, and will take effect in less than 60 days if no objections are raised.   The country’s Fisheries Agency has stated that although fishing vessels are banned from catching the three species, catching them for teaching or scientific research purposes will be allowed after obtaining Cabinet-level approval from the Council of Agriculture. This follows the Taiwanese ban on fishing Whale sharks in 2018 and shark finning in 2012. Did you know that almost 100 million sharks are killed each year for their fins? That’s just one of the many facts I learned while doing some research on Shark Awareness Day and became aware of exactly what sharks do for our oceans.⁠ ⁠ Sharks have been around for roughly 400 million years and there are nearly 500 different species of sharks in the world today. They are divided into 8 classifications. Out of 500 species of sharks there are only 3 species of sharks that are responsible for the most human attacks; the great white, tiger, and bull shark. Also, the odds of being attacked by a shark are 1 in 11.5 million! You might have a better chance at winning the lottery!⁠ ⁠ Sharks have a streamlined body and fins that help swim through water, fast. Their gills take in oxygen directly from the water and they never need to surface to breathe. They also have an outrageous number of sharp teeth that when one is lost a new one grows back.⁠ ⁠ Sharks are known to have some of the largest brains of all the fish species and are at the top of the food chain in every part of the ocean. Sharks also play a large role in the ocean’s ecosystem, even more than fish.⁠ ⁠ They eat everything they can in the ocean, from dead carcasses to sick prey, which helps keep the population healthy. They also keep marine life population at the right size so that one species does not become too populous in the ocean. Through this control, sharks indirectly maintain the sea grass and coral reef habitats as well. If sharks did not play such a vital role, or had a decrease in numbers, or started to become extinct, the oceans would be out of balance.⁠ ⁠ Shark Awareness Day was designed to provide education and awareness of how important sharks are to the ecosystem of our oceans.
