Happy Shark Awareness Day! Today we want to celebrate some of the lesser known species of shark native to the coastal waters of California. Like brown smoothound, soupfin, spiny dogfish, leopard, and swell sharks, all abundant in California waters. Most shark species are not dangerous to humans and the beautiful angel shark is one of them. If you were a small fish cruising near the sandy bottom you COULD be in danger though. The angel shark is an ambush predator with a lightening quick gulping reflex. It lays on the bottom motionless and covered in sand all day waiting for an opportunity to surprise and snap up any unsuspecting fish swimming by. The prey preferences of these smaller species of sharks typically include small fish and invertebrates, such as shrimp, crabs, lobsters, and some mollusks. We also celebrate the JAWESOMENESS of these incredible oceanic predators! Did you know that sharks also do their bit to control the threat of global warming? They do more than most as they are biologically charged with keeping prey populations in check. For example, they feed on animals such as sea turtles, who consume huge amounts of sea grass. Sea grass stores large amounts of carbon from the atmosphere. But when the turtles population expands at an unsustainable rate, this essential carbon storage is threatened. Sharks, the sea turtles natural predators, are the only ones that can keep this in check. Reaching over 35 million viewers every year, all of this attention comes with both good and bad and the consequences of shark week have become more controversial in the eyes of conservationists. . The fearful mentality and constant talk about “shark attacks” however, has had some negative impacts on the way that sharks are widely perceived. In a world where over 100 million sharks are killed each year and populations are rapidly declining it is more important than ever that we quickly shift from the unrealistic monsters we make them out to be to a more accurate depiction of the animals that are the backbone of marine ecosystems. . A 360 camera records this tiger sharks movements like never before. Deployed last month during a film shoot for @sharkweek, everything here is custom assembled, meaning many hours were spent each night testing out the ballast and flotation of the bio-logger package before we put it out in this female tiger shark. The entire package comes off the shark after 1 day, leaving nothing - the only kicker: we need to go find the tag. It’s always an adventure - this tag popped 10 miles away in the deep. Fin cams are an incredible way to see how sharks use their environments, but being able to see behind, above, and below the shark is a game changer. Story time! Everyone knows Im crazy about shark teeth. I didnt start hunting for them in the wild until last year... but when I first started diving I volunteered as a diver at the aquarium back home (@newport_aquarium). As a volunteer I helped out with lots of tasks like preparing food, feeding some of the animals, and maintaining their habits (aka cleaning the glass and the gravel lol). Sometimes after we were finished with the tasks that needed to be completed that day, we would get to look for sharks teeth in the big tank (that was obliviously full of sharks lol). At the time, the tank had sandtiger sharks (pictured), sandbar sharks (pictured), shark rays (bowmouth guitarfish), white and blacktip sharks, nurse sharks, zebra sharks and juvy scalloped hammerheads. My collection started out with the bright white teeth from some of these beautiful creatures the aquarium took such great care of. I don’t know what you’re going through. But I see you. Covid has been a wonderful teacher. It’s taught us to be slow and gentle with ourselves, but it’s also been isolating. Incredibly isolating for those who are already isolated. It’s made the vulnerable more vulnerable. It’s made us scared of one another, judgemental and hold back. I have spent the last few days really thinking about #sharkweek. I love it, don’t get me wrong. But it is missing something. I looked it up and last year, 35 million people watched Shark Week! After a week of celebrating these amazing animals, wouldn’t it be great if the last episode was a list of things all 35 million people can do to save our sharks? Sharks are in real trouble. They are being overfished, mutilated for their fins, poisoned, hunted to extinction, and caught as bycatch. Shark is in our pet’s food and in our makeup. We are taking their habitat, warming their waters, and polluting it with our trash. @discovery - You have such a big audience. Next year, can we end Shark Week with a whole episode that is a call to action? A call for conservation. Protection. Respect. For our oceans and our sharks. There are so many shark conservationists doing critical shark saving work - please consider giving them the platform they need to help us help our sharks. I am only 8. Todays #SaturdaySpotlight goes to our sandtiger shark, Swaj! 🦈 Swaj is the only sandtiger shark we currently have in our larger Shark Exhibit. This exhibit is the largest one in the aquarium, holding 58,000 gallons of water and various species of shark and bony fish. Swaj arrived at the aquarium in May of 2004 from Long Island Aquarium. At that time he was only around 46 inches long and 18 lbs 👶🏻Now hes almost 6.5 feet long and over 150 lbs! Swaj is the slowest swimming shark in the exhibit. He likes to take his time with everything and is the most courteous shark we have. He definitely doesnt live up to his name, which is Jaws spelt backwards. Swaj and Luseal, as well as some of our other animals, are all available for adoption through our Adopt-an-Animal program. The Kristin Jacobs Ocean Conservation Act (SB680) is now law in the Sunshine State, what will soon be known as the previous hub of the fin trade for the United States. This was no easy feat, to say the least, 2 years of sweat, tears and a couple drops of blood. The journey was filled with tough hurdles and strong opposition, there was not a single easy day in this campaign. But all of us persisted and with this we have proven, once again, that we can succeed if we persist. When we started this campaign we were told that it couldn’t be done in Florida, that there was no point in trying. Well, sometimes it is the toughest fights we have to tackle, just because they usually are the most important ones. When we put our collective power behind an effort, we can do the (nearly) impossible.⠀ ⠀ We cannot thank our Allies enough, you spoke up for sharks every single time we said go! They are caught incidentally and commercially targeted for their valuable fins in longline, bottom trawl, gillnet and hook-and-line fisheries. Great hammerheads are particularly threatened by the global shark fin trade because of the large size of their fins. More than 90 percent of great hammerheads die once they are captured by targeted or incidental fisheries. This high mortality rate, along with the shark’s coastal habitat and highly valued fin, makes the great hammerhead shark endangered with extinction. Did you know that almost 100 million sharks are killed each year for their fins? That’s just one of the many facts I learned while doing some research on Shark Awareness Day and became aware of exactly what sharks do for our oceans. Sharks have been around for roughly 400 million years and there are nearly 500 different species of sharks in the world today. They are divided into 8 classifications. Out of 500 species of sharks there are only 3 species of sharks that are responsible for the most human attacks; the great white, tiger, and bull shark. Also, the odds of being attacked by a shark are 1 in 11.5 million! You might have a better chance at winning the lottery! Sharks have a streamlined body and fins that help swim through water, fast. Their gills take in oxygen directly from the water and they never need to surface to breathe. They also have an outrageous number of sharp teeth that when one is lost a new one grows back. Sharks are known to have some of the largest brains of all the fish species and are at the top of the food chain in every part of the ocean. Sharks also play a large role in the ocean’s ecosystem, even more than fish. They eat everything they can in the ocean, from dead carcasses to sick prey, which helps keep the population healthy. They also keep marine life population at the right size so that one species does not become too populous in the ocean. Through this control, sharks indirectly maintain the sea grass and coral reef habitats as well. If sharks did not play such a vital role, or had a decrease in numbers, or started to become extinct, the oceans would be out of balance. Shark Awareness Day was designed to provide education and awareness of how important sharks are to the ecosystem of our oceans. Taiwan bans fishing the giant Megamouth shark, Great White and Basking sharks. Since the Megamouth shark was discovered and named in 1976, only 226 have been recorded around the world as of June 17 this year — 146 of which were caught in Taiwan. The fishing ban also includes the Great White shark and Basking shark. Taiwan Fisheries made the announcement July 15, in an effort to preserve biodiversity in the waters of Taiwan. The ban is set to apply to all Taiwanese fishing boats, no matter where they fish, and will take effect in less than 60 days if no objections are raised. The country’s Fisheries Agency has stated that although fishing vessels are banned from catching the three species, catching them for teaching or scientific research purposes will be allowed after obtaining Cabinet-level approval from the Council of Agriculture. This follows the Taiwanese ban on fishing Whale sharks in 2018 and shark finning in 2012. Heard that there were a couple of Grey Nurse sharks hanging round the bay so had to jump in and have a look around. Every single time that theyve been around they always manage to elude me, except for this time. Jumped in the water swam out about 50 metres and stumbled across a juvenile straight away.
