#DidYouKnow Hammerhead sharks can get a suntan just like us humans? It’s true! A study conducted by the CSULB lab in California revealed that scalloped hammerhead sharks (Sphyrna lewini) have the ability to darken in color (from a light tan to a dark brown) when exposed to solar radiation. In the wild, pups are lighter in color because they take refuge in the murky waters of the bay in avoidance of getting eaten by other adult sharks. Story time! Everyone knows Im crazy about shark teeth. I didnt start hunting for them in the wild until last year... but when I first started diving I volunteered as a diver at the aquarium back home (@newport_aquarium). As a volunteer I helped out with lots of tasks like preparing food, feeding some of the animals, and maintaining their habits (aka cleaning the glass and the gravel lol). Sometimes after we were finished with the tasks that needed to be completed that day, we would get to look for sharks teeth in the big tank (that was obliviously full of sharks lol). At the time, the tank had sandtiger sharks (pictured), sandbar sharks (pictured), shark rays (bowmouth guitarfish), white and blacktip sharks, nurse sharks, zebra sharks and juvy scalloped hammerheads. My collection started out with the bright white teeth from some of these beautiful creatures the aquarium took such great care of. Over the past 32 years sharks have been brought a whole lot of glory with their own “Shark Week” on the Discovery Channel. Reaching over 35 million viewers every year, all of this attention comes with both good and bad and the consequences of shark week have become more controversial in the eyes of conservationists. . The fearful mentality and constant talk about “shark attacks” however, has had some negative impacts on the way that sharks are widely perceived. In a world where over 100 million sharks are killed each year and populations are rapidly declining it is more important than ever that we quickly shift from the unrealistic monsters we make them out to be to a more accurate depiction of the animals that are the backbone of marine ecosystems. . What can you do to help? Let @discovery know that you understand the importance of sharks and how imperative it is that a conservation mentality is applied to shark week. The truth is that if we want to continue to have a shark week to celebrate at all then we need to learn how to appreciate sharks for the beautiful, diverse, and essential animals that they are rather than the terrifying creatures that humans have created in the media. 🦈DEBATE TIME🦈 Cool or negative? Join the debate. Our observations... We always criticize how our society has contributed to the negative portrayal of sharks. Starting with the obvious Jaws movie, continuing with shark encounters, with surfers and finishing with the classic biting shark image we all have in mind from cage diving (we dont really know how to categorize this experience BTW). On the other hand, there is a whole diving community, that admires these creatures and tries to educate students and fellow divers about not only their importance to the ecosystem but the mistaken image they have so unwillingly earned. 🦈 BUT... Here we go... 🦈 What about those funny shark costumes and accessories that feed off that exact negative shark image? You know what we mean, right? The shark sleeping bag, shark slippers, the jaws costume (the one that looks like you are being eaten by Jaws himself), or those funky wine glasses with the shark fins rising from the inside (of course the redder the wine, the better)... We might find these personally cute or funny, however, isnt it a bit contradictory we find these products cute or funny, even though we, as dive professionals, understand they represent and foment an exaggerated or even an unreal image of sharks? Heard that there were a couple of Grey Nurse sharks hanging round the bay so had to jump in and have a look around. Every single time that theyve been around they always manage to elude me, except for this time. Jumped in the water swam out about 50 metres and stumbled across a juvenile straight away. I have spent the last few days really thinking about #sharkweek. I love it, don’t get me wrong. But it is missing something. I looked it up and last year, 35 million people watched Shark Week! After a week of celebrating these amazing animals, wouldn’t it be great if the last episode was a list of things all 35 million people can do to save our sharks? Sharks are in real trouble. They are being overfished, mutilated for their fins, poisoned, hunted to extinction, and caught as bycatch. Shark is in our pet’s food and in our makeup. We are taking their habitat, warming their waters, and polluting it with our trash. @discovery - You have such a big audience. Next year, can we end Shark Week with a whole episode that is a call to action? A call for conservation. Protection. Respect. For our oceans and our sharks. There are so many shark conservationists doing critical shark saving work - please consider giving them the platform they need to help us help our sharks. I am only 8. It’s time to celebrate, Florida is officially the 15th state to ban the shark fin trade! The Kristin Jacobs Ocean Conservation Act (SB680) is now law in the Sunshine State, what will soon be known as the previous hub of the fin trade for the United States. This was no easy feat, to say the least, 2 years of sweat, tears and a couple drops of blood. The journey was filled with tough hurdles and strong opposition, there was not a single easy day in this campaign. But all of us persisted and with this we have proven, once again, that we can succeed if we persist. When we started this campaign we were told that it couldn’t be done in Florida, that there was no point in trying. Well, sometimes it is the toughest fights we have to tackle, just because they usually are the most important ones. When we put our collective power behind an effort, we can do the (nearly) impossible.⠀ ⠀ We cannot thank our Allies enough, you spoke up for sharks every single time we said go! Happy Sharkweek! 🦈 Great hammerheads are vulnerable to overfishing. They are caught incidentally and commercially targeted for their valuable fins in longline, bottom trawl, gillnet and hook-and-line fisheries. Great hammerheads are particularly threatened by the global shark fin trade because of the large size of their fins. More than 90 percent of great hammerheads die once they are captured by targeted or incidental fisheries. This high mortality rate, along with the shark’s coastal habitat and highly valued fin, makes the great hammerhead shark endangered with extinction. Taiwan bans fishing the giant Megamouth shark, Great White and Basking sharks. Since the Megamouth shark was discovered and named in 1976, only 226 have been recorded around the world as of June 17 this year — 146 of which were caught in Taiwan. The fishing ban also includes the Great White shark and Basking shark. Taiwan Fisheries made the announcement July 15, in an effort to preserve biodiversity in the waters of Taiwan. The ban is set to apply to all Taiwanese fishing boats, no matter where they fish, and will take effect in less than 60 days if no objections are raised. The country’s Fisheries Agency has stated that although fishing vessels are banned from catching the three species, catching them for teaching or scientific research purposes will be allowed after obtaining Cabinet-level approval from the Council of Agriculture. This follows the Taiwanese ban on fishing Whale sharks in 2018 and shark finning in 2012.
