Over the past 32 years sharks have been brought a whole lot of glory with their own “Shark Week” on the Discovery Channel. Reaching over 35 million viewers every year, all of this attention comes with both good and bad and the consequences of shark week have become more controversial in the eyes of conservationists. . The fearful mentality and constant talk about “shark attacks” however, has had some negative impacts on the way that sharks are widely perceived. In a world where over 100 million sharks are killed each year and populations are rapidly declining it is more important than ever that we quickly shift from the unrealistic monsters we make them out to be to a more accurate depiction of the animals that are the backbone of marine ecosystems. . What can you do to help? Let @discovery know that you understand the importance of sharks and how imperative it is that a conservation mentality is applied to shark week. The truth is that if we want to continue to have a shark week to celebrate at all then we need to learn how to appreciate sharks for the beautiful, diverse, and essential animals that they are rather than the terrifying creatures that humans have created in the media. #SOSGalápagos Update: The Chinese fishing fleet that has been occupying waters just outside the Galápagos Islands since July is still in the area. The story of Hope the Whale Shark, whose GPS tracker last pinged in the same area of the vessels (believed to have been captured by the fleet) has highlighted the dire threats that not only these endangered species face, but all marine animals. What chance do they have to escape a 248 strong industrial fishing vessels. This morning @sharkgirlmadison spoke with the Galápagos Whale Shark Project who tagged Hope, and they reported that another 3 whale sharks have gone missing since Hope. We thought we would share this post, to show the harrowing reality that these sharks face. In 2014, Hong Kong Based organisation WildLifeRisk discovered a whale shark factory in China, said to process up to 600 whale sharks each year. This three-year long investigation found that the factory was processing the sharks In a statement to Business Insider, WildLifeRisk reported that: The whale shark skins are sold as leather into the bag trade. Whale shark lips, stomach and flesh go to the restaurant trade as food. However, the money-maker is the concentrated oil in the shark’s liver (‘squalene’) which is used for skin care products and lipstick, as well as Omega-3 health supplements. The supplements are sold internationally in contravention of CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora). Basking sharks and great white sharks are also being processed at the factory. There’s evidence the same whale sharks seen off the North West of Australia area being caught. Undercover footage and audio recordings obtained by WildLifeRisk reveal that migratory whale sharks present in Australian waters are being caught off the coast of China in the South China Sea, and also further afield in the Pacific – specifically in waters of the Philippines, Indonesia and even as far away as Mexico. I am so incredibly lucky to capture and share moments like this. Two critically-endangered oceanic white tips, dancing in the shallows right in front of me. But I can never bottle the emotion of it. I can’t capture that part and I can never make you feel it the way that I feel it. It’s like drinking from firehose. You can’t even imagine the beauty and balance of 300 million years of evolutionary perfection. It’s intoxicating. But the after-taste is sour. Because you know without a fundamental focus and global revolution towards the health and abundance of our oceans, we are going to loose it. All of it. 300 million years of balance, gone, in only a few hundred years. Not on our watch? It’s happening on our watch! We can never let up. Never give up hope. We can fight. We can VOTE. Happy shark awareness day! The 14th of July is a special day dedicated to raising awareness for the plight of sharks around the world. We also celebrate the JAWESOMENESS of these incredible oceanic predators! Did you know that sharks also do their bit to control the threat of global warming? They do more than most as they are biologically charged with keeping prey populations in check. For example, they feed on animals such as sea turtles, who consume huge amounts of sea grass. Sea grass stores large amounts of carbon from the atmosphere. But when the turtles population expands at an unsustainable rate, this essential carbon storage is threatened. Sharks, the sea turtles natural predators, are the only ones that can keep this in check. A 360 camera records this tiger sharks movements like never before. Deployed last month during a film shoot for @sharkweek, everything here is custom assembled, meaning many hours were spent each night testing out the ballast and flotation of the bio-logger package before we put it out in this female tiger shark. The entire package comes off the shark after 1 day, leaving nothing - the only kicker: we need to go find the tag. It’s always an adventure - this tag popped 10 miles away in the deep. Fin cams are an incredible way to see how sharks use their environments, but being able to see behind, above, and below the shark is a game changer. #DidYouKnow Hammerhead sharks can get a suntan just like us humans? It’s true! A study conducted by the CSULB lab in California revealed that scalloped hammerhead sharks (Sphyrna lewini) have the ability to darken in color (from a light tan to a dark brown) when exposed to solar radiation. In the wild, pups are lighter in color because they take refuge in the murky waters of the bay in avoidance of getting eaten by other adult sharks. 🦈 Pregnant Tagged Shark Recaught by Texas Anglers 🦈 Why does Texas have so many sharks? Citizen Scientists are helping the @sportfishcenter find out! On July 12, 2019, Nick Fuller caught, tagged, and released a Lemon Shark as part of the Texas Shark Rodeo. The visible bite marks on the animal are indicative of mating behavior. Lemon Sharks gestate for about a year and tend to pup from spring to late summer. Fast forward to August 21, 2020, Paul Odabashian recaptured the same shark and the @sportfishcenter was very excited to see the animal was visibly heavier. Evidence like this suggests Texas might provide critical mating and pupping grounds for these animals. THANK YOU to all the Citizen Scientists and angling partners! Taiwan bans fishing the giant Megamouth shark, Great White and Basking sharks. Since the Megamouth shark was discovered and named in 1976, only 226 have been recorded around the world as of June 17 this year — 146 of which were caught in Taiwan. The fishing ban also includes the Great White shark and Basking shark. Taiwan Fisheries made the announcement July 15, in an effort to preserve biodiversity in the waters of Taiwan. The ban is set to apply to all Taiwanese fishing boats, no matter where they fish, and will take effect in less than 60 days if no objections are raised. The country’s Fisheries Agency has stated that although fishing vessels are banned from catching the three species, catching them for teaching or scientific research purposes will be allowed after obtaining Cabinet-level approval from the Council of Agriculture. This follows the Taiwanese ban on fishing Whale sharks in 2018 and shark finning in 2012. Story time! Everyone knows Im crazy about shark teeth. I didnt start hunting for them in the wild until last year... but when I first started diving I volunteered as a diver at the aquarium back home (@newport_aquarium). As a volunteer I helped out with lots of tasks like preparing food, feeding some of the animals, and maintaining their habits (aka cleaning the glass and the gravel lol). Sometimes after we were finished with the tasks that needed to be completed that day, we would get to look for sharks teeth in the big tank (that was obliviously full of sharks lol). At the time, the tank had sandtiger sharks (pictured), sandbar sharks (pictured), shark rays (bowmouth guitarfish), white and blacktip sharks, nurse sharks, zebra sharks and juvy scalloped hammerheads. My collection started out with the bright white teeth from some of these beautiful creatures the aquarium took such great care of. It’s time to celebrate, Florida is officially the 15th state to ban the shark fin trade! The Kristin Jacobs Ocean Conservation Act (SB680) is now law in the Sunshine State, what will soon be known as the previous hub of the fin trade for the United States. This was no easy feat, to say the least, 2 years of sweat, tears and a couple drops of blood. The journey was filled with tough hurdles and strong opposition, there was not a single easy day in this campaign. But all of us persisted and with this we have proven, once again, that we can succeed if we persist. When we started this campaign we were told that it couldn’t be done in Florida, that there was no point in trying. Well, sometimes it is the toughest fights we have to tackle, just because they usually are the most important ones. When we put our collective power behind an effort, we can do the (nearly) impossible.⠀ ⠀ We cannot thank our Allies enough, you spoke up for sharks every single time we said go! Todays #SaturdaySpotlight goes to our sandtiger shark, Swaj! 🦈 Swaj is the only sandtiger shark we currently have in our larger Shark Exhibit. This exhibit is the largest one in the aquarium, holding 58,000 gallons of water and various species of shark and bony fish. Swaj arrived at the aquarium in May of 2004 from Long Island Aquarium. At that time he was only around 46 inches long and 18 lbs 👶🏻Now hes almost 6.5 feet long and over 150 lbs! Swaj is the slowest swimming shark in the exhibit. He likes to take his time with everything and is the most courteous shark we have. He definitely doesnt live up to his name, which is Jaws spelt backwards. Swaj and Luseal, as well as some of our other animals, are all available for adoption through our Adopt-an-Animal program. Today is the last day of Shark Week. Montauks relationship with sharks is long and storied, whether that be historical, mythological, or somewhere in-between. In 2016, Ocearch discovered the first great white nursery in the North Atlantic off the coast of Montauk, not far from the Montauk Lighthouse. Robert Shaws Quint is loosely based on Montauker Frank Mundus; in Jaws, he mentions he caught a 16-footer off of Montauk. In June, Coronavirus be damned, the 50th Annual Shark Tournament was held. . Pictured here is Parker. Parker and his dad Captain Ron caught this 220lb mako shark a couple weeks ago. He was yummy. Kinda tasted like swordfish. Heard that there were a couple of Grey Nurse sharks hanging round the bay so had to jump in and have a look around. Every single time that theyve been around they always manage to elude me, except for this time. Jumped in the water swam out about 50 metres and stumbled across a juvenile straight away. They are caught incidentally and commercially targeted for their valuable fins in longline, bottom trawl, gillnet and hook-and-line fisheries. Great hammerheads are particularly threatened by the global shark fin trade because of the large size of their fins. More than 90 percent of great hammerheads die once they are captured by targeted or incidental fisheries. This high mortality rate, along with the shark’s coastal habitat and highly valued fin, makes the great hammerhead shark endangered with extinction.
