🦈DEBATE TIME🦈 Cool or negative? Join the debate. Our observations... We always criticize how our society has contributed to the negative portrayal of sharks. Starting with the obvious Jaws movie, continuing with shark encounters, with surfers and finishing with the classic biting shark image we all have in mind from cage diving (we dont really know how to categorize this experience BTW). On the other hand, there is a whole diving community, that admires these creatures and tries to educate students and fellow divers about not only their importance to the ecosystem but the mistaken image they have so unwillingly earned. 🦈 BUT... Here we go... 🦈 What about those funny shark costumes and accessories that feed off that exact negative shark image? You know what we mean, right? The shark sleeping bag, shark slippers, the jaws costume (the one that looks like you are being eaten by Jaws himself), or those funky wine glasses with the shark fins rising from the inside (of course the redder the wine, the better)... We might find these personally cute or funny, however, isnt it a bit contradictory we find these products cute or funny, even though we, as dive professionals, understand they represent and foment an exaggerated or even an unreal image of sharks? We would love to hear your thoughts on the matter, and please dont get us wrong, we are not trying to offend anybody here. Taiwan bans fishing the giant Megamouth shark, Great White and Basking sharks. Since the Megamouth shark was discovered and named in 1976, only 226 have been recorded around the world as of June 17 this year — 146 of which were caught in Taiwan. The fishing ban also includes the Great White shark and Basking shark. Taiwan Fisheries made the announcement July 15, in an effort to preserve biodiversity in the waters of Taiwan. The ban is set to apply to all Taiwanese fishing boats, no matter where they fish, and will take effect in less than 60 days if no objections are raised. The country’s Fisheries Agency has stated that although fishing vessels are banned from catching the three species, catching them for teaching or scientific research purposes will be allowed after obtaining Cabinet-level approval from the Council of Agriculture. This follows the Taiwanese ban on fishing Whale sharks in 2018 and shark finning in 2012. Happy Sharkweek! 🦈 Great hammerheads are vulnerable to overfishing. They are caught incidentally and commercially targeted for their valuable fins in longline, bottom trawl, gillnet and hook-and-line fisheries. Great hammerheads are particularly threatened by the global shark fin trade because of the large size of their fins. More than 90 percent of great hammerheads die once they are captured by targeted or incidental fisheries. This high mortality rate, along with the shark’s coastal habitat and highly valued fin, makes the great hammerhead shark endangered with extinction. It’s time to celebrate, Florida is officially the 15th state to ban the shark fin trade! The Kristin Jacobs Ocean Conservation Act (SB680) is now law in the Sunshine State, what will soon be known as the previous hub of the fin trade for the United States. This was no easy feat, to say the least, 2 years of sweat, tears and a couple drops of blood. The journey was filled with tough hurdles and strong opposition, there was not a single easy day in this campaign. But all of us persisted and with this we have proven, once again, that we can succeed if we persist. When we started this campaign we were told that it couldn’t be done in Florida, that there was no point in trying. Well, sometimes it is the toughest fights we have to tackle, just because they usually are the most important ones. When we put our collective power behind an effort, we can do the (nearly) impossible.⠀ ⠀ We cannot thank our Allies enough, you spoke up for sharks every single time we said go! Pic & caption by @mikecoots In the years after the shark attack, I was fascinated and intrigued why sharks attack people. I read and reread shark attack files, books on shark attacks. Anything I could digest on why I was chosen to be bitten. Then one day I got a call from a fellow shark attack survivor Debbie. She had asked if I had seen Sharkwater, a film by Rob Stewart on the fateful demise of global shark populations. I was beyond baffled. None of these shark attack books talked about the real dangers in the oceans - humans. The film blew my mind, and it was that day I knew I needed to help speak up for sharks. Robs gift of storytelling and passion for our oceans has helped bring light to a often dark subject. Through the years, I have met many who worked production on Sharkwater, and it was a personal goal to meet Rob and thank him. These last few weeks, I spoke to a couple people close to him and said if you see Rob let him know his film changed my life. I cant believe you passed away this week. Although we never met, you are my hero. You left doing the work you were put on Earth to do. With camera in hand, and a passion to tell the story that needs to be told. 🙏 - @sharks on Instagram

Don’t forget to check in this weekend for fun activities that we will be posting to participate in from home for our Camp-In! #esrecandparks #virtualsummercamp #sharkweek #hellosummer #kidsactivities #snackclub #ocean #sharkbait #cprs #nrpa #parksmakelifebetter Materials Needed: Toilet paper tubes (one for each shark) Gray paint (You can mix white and black paint) White paper Paintbrushes Googly eyes School glue Hot glue gun (optional) Black marker Directions: Step 1: Cut out the “mouth” section by cutting a triangle into one end of the toilet paper tube (Save the leftover triangle pieces or the fin and the tail) Step 2: Paint the body, tail and fins (leftover triangles from cut out mouth) Step 3: Allow the paint to completely dry Step 4: Cut out rows of teeth from plain white paper by cutting in a zig zag pattern Step 5: It’s now time for assembly, using school glue (hot glue is preferred for maximum adhesion, if being supervised or assisted by a parent). Glue on the tail, googly eyes and fins Step 6: Draw on the sharks gills with a marker Step 7: Glue in the teeth strips Step 8: Boom! You are finished! - @esrecandparks on Instagram

Quand une enseigne de grande distribution assume la promotion et la mise en avant macabre d’une espèce menacée, on est en droit de se poser de réelles questions sur son éthique … Pour rappel : Le requin-renard est une espèce menacée dont la pêche ciblée est interdite. Si les captures accidentelles ne sont pas sanctionnées et quil est légal de les commercialiser, le manque déthique et lirresponsabilité des professionnels avides de profits ne doivent plus être ignorés. Une interdiction de pêche ciblée sans interdiction de commercialisation nest en rien une mesure de protection. Ces captures ne peuvent continuer à profiter à des professionnels peu scrupuleux. Si certains préfèreront pointer du doigt un seul responsable (Pêcheur, Etat, Consommateur, Poissonnier, Supermarché ou Restaurateur), il est important de rappeler le rôle de chacun car tous font que ces pratiques sont encore possibles : Le pêcheur : par ses méthodes de pêche non sélective tout en ayant conscience de son impact dévastateur sur ces espèces sans y changer quoi que ce soit et en créant une offre irresponsable. L’Etat : en autorisant la commercialisation d’espèces menacées et en ne contrôlant pas le caractère accidentel de ses captures ou leur possible remise à l’eau Le consommateur : en créant la demande via l’achat et la consommation de ces espèces Le restaurateur, le poissonnier ou l’enseigne de supermarché : en créant à la fois l’offre pour le consommateur et la demande pour le pêcheur sans se dire qu’ils ont la carte de l’éthique à jouer et non celle de la promotion et du profit.
