- 30 Jul - On this day in 1943 the liner RMS Queen Mary arrived in Scotland from New York carrying US troops. She was carrying 16,683 souls, the greatest number of people ever embarked in one ship. She was escorted by the Royal Navy and averaged 28 Knots during the passage. Credit: @OnthisdayRN

::: THE PROPOSAL GAMES::: A couple of days ago it was 4 years since we both said yes to joining our lives together and embarking on the adventure that is married life. In our case we both literally said yes as we proposed to each other! It wasnt coordinated, I figured out what was going on when Targ flew to Prague in secret to ask my mom for her blessing and at that moment I realised how important it was for me to propose to him too. I really wanted to start this next chapter off on totally equal footing. I tell you though, going around jewellers requesting that they make a ring for the boyfriend who will definitely be proposing soon raises a few eyebrows and prompts more than a few pitying looks! And dont even get me started on the logistics of ensuring that I had Targs ring with me at every potentially romantic moment in case a proposal was about to go down. Thankfully it all worked out and we both whipped out our respective rings at sunrise on a deserted island in the BVIs those 4 years ago. That was our second sailing holiday and we cannot wait to take Lady G back to that gorgeous place in the next couple of years. These were definitely encouraging thoughts as we battled for 9 hours straight to cover our Ladys 57 foot long belly with silicone. So here is to buckets of boat work but also amazing times on tropical islands to come! - @drugboatdreams on Instagram

A little history lesson looking at the ‘Super J’, Ranger - the fastest of all the American J’s. 1️⃣ Starling Burgess and Olin J Stephens designed Ranger for Harold Vanderbilt’s 1937 America’s Cup defence against Sir Thomas Sopwith’s Endeavour II. 2️⃣ Built from high grade steel, Ranger was launched on 11th May 1937. Disaster struck on the delivery trip from Maine to Newport when rigging parts fell from the mast whilst under tow. Nothing could be done at that stage of the delivery and the top 30 broke off. Fortunately, a new aluminium mast built for Rainbow was loaned to the project and used throughout the Defender series until Rangers mast could be repaired. 3️⃣ Ranger went on to prove conclusively that she was the fastest of all the American yachts. She beat the British challenger Endeavour II 4-0 at Newport, Rhode Island. It was the last time J-class yachts would race for the Americas Cup. 4️⃣ By the end of 1941, Ranger, which had been laid up with all the other US Js, was scrapped. 5️⃣ The Ranger that sails today is a replica built to the original lines drawings in steel and launched at the Danish Yacht shipyard in Skagen, Denmark in 2003. WE ARE HOME! A message from our first mate Merle on behalf of the crew Yesterday we arrived in Scheveningen after more than 80 days at sea, sailing the Europa across the Atlantic Ocean from the Southern tip of Argentina to the Netherlands. And what a welcome we received! It is hard to describe the feeling one might have when coming back to land after such a long time away, not knowing how the world might have changed in the months that have passed. This voyage was unexpected to everyone and the reason behind it not a happy one, the future unclear. And even-though we had a wonderful time and a lot of fun, most of us spent the very last days of this trip with mixed feelings; happy to go home and see our families but also a little bit afraid to leave our safe (and Corona-free) Europa bubble. But all that was forgotten as we sailed through the piers and found that so many friends and loved ones had made their way to Scheveningen to welcome us home What a wonderful surprise! We would like to thank everyone for all the support and the lovely messages that we were sent during the last 12 weeks and for the simply amazing welcome (especially for all the fresh fruits that we longed for so much!! :-). Thanks to everyone who came to Scheveningen and thank you to all of you who stayed safely at home and followed us via the live-stream. Of course a big thank you to the KNRM and Jachtclub Scheveningen, who were the first ones welcoming us with a fleet of supporting yachts and a large box of the tastiest herrings. thanks for all the fish! FS Dunkerque ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dunkerque was the lead ship of Dunkerque Class Battleship built for the French Navy in the 1930s. The class also included Strasbourg. The two ships were the first capital ship to be built by the French Navy after WW1; the planned Normandie and Lyon Classes had been cancelled at the outbreak of war, and budgetary problems prevented the French from building new battleships in the decade after the war. Dunkerque was laid down in December 1932, was launched October 1935, and was completed in May 1937. She was armed with a main battery of eight 330mm/50 modéle 1931 gun, arranged in two quadruple gun turrets and had a top speed of 29.5 knots (54.6 km/h; 33.9 mph) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dunkerque and Strasbourg formed the French Navys 1ère Division de Ligne (1st Division of the Line) prior the Second World War. The two ships searched for German commerce raiders in the early months of the war, and Dunkerque also participated in convoy escort duties. The ship was badly damaged during the British attack after the Armistice that ended the first phase of Frances participation in WW2, but she was refloated and partially repaired to return to Toulon for comprehensive repairs. Dunkerque was scyttled in November 1942 to prevent her capture by the Germans, and subsequently seized and partially scrapped by the Italians and later the Germans. ON THIS DAY… in 1916, Yelcho arrived into Punta Arenas in Chile. Onboard the vessel was the crew who had left England with Ernest Shackleton two years earlier, 22 of whom had been stranded on Elephant Island for 137 days, with little to keep them going other than the belief that their leader would one day return to rescue them. On 30 August 1916, that day came. - The Yelcho rescue was all the more impressive given that the vessel was deemed unfit for purpose prior to departure; her steel-built steamer was not strengthened against the thick ice and she had no proper heating system.
