Yesterday marked exactly one year since I took the plunge and moved to London. To say it was the best decision I could have made would be an understatement. It was just three months after Ben’s passing that I moved and up until that point it was a hazy blur running on a potent fuel of excitement for change mixed with the pure heartbreak of having my two years apart twin ripped away from me. Now ... I really am home. When the move was first done, no new job to go to and a load of hours to sit listening to my dark thoughts, I had no distractions and now realise it was when my grieving properly started. When someone dies your life changes forever, you start this new chapter of devastation and you certainly don’t get given a hand book on ‘Grieving’. One I’m not sure on reflection I would read after knowing the tunnel of pain you have to ride through. When you lose someone and tell another human they instantly feel the need to try to make you feel better (or themselves) and say something like “I know how you feel, my Nan died last year, in a few months you’ll be ok, 7 stages of grief and all that”. I think I can talk on behalf of most when I say, please refrain from being such an imbecile and don’t compare your personal experience with losing someone and how you grieved to someone else’s. Losing a loved one is harrowing but every single one of us humans are wired differently. What we feel, how we react, our mind, bodies, souls and for every person unlucky enough to have a ticket to ride through that tunnel of pain to grief will be different. The room I’m sitting in (in my cousins flat) was the room Ben was supposed to move into. Sprinkled all around this room are some of Ben’s belongings and pictures of his beautiful face. I always say goodnight to him and good morning. What started with saying them through teary eyes is slowly being out weighed through smiles. The documented installation of Tyler Bloomquist’s inspiration in Polaroid format displayed in his most recent show “Strata” provided context to his new large oil paintings. He created his abstract forms from the deconstruction of repetitive line gestures built up over years spent crafting and studying graffiti. It’s been a month since I moved into my new house & it’s been interesting to say the least & it’s less to do with the actual house & more the conversations around it. I tend to ignore it or passively aggressively indirect on my stories like a normal person. I was always afraid to live my life because there‘s always someone with something to say. When I moved into my first place, it was “you’re doing too much”, when I got my car it was the same thing. How I post hasn’t changed, for as long as I’ve been on social media I’ve been sharing my journey, the backdrop is just a bit more aesthetically pleasing now. It’s also more frequent because I have a little more to share. Nobody said anything when I was the mayor of Edgeville, posting my goals on the wall from my small room at my dad’s house or from the bus/train. I’ve heard it all in the last few weeks, from “he’s a drug dealer” to “he can’t afford it”. I’ve been called “arrogant” by people that don’t know me, for nothing other just enjoying & posting my things. I’ve worked hard to get to where I am & I don’t look down on or think I’m better than anyone else (except Evoque drivers). I’ve never been ashamed of who I am & where I’ve been & I speak openly about my journey. I was 26/27 when I moved out of my dads house & I didn’t get my first car until was 28. (I’m 31 in a few months). When you see me post & you think to yourself “he’s so gassed” “he’s so excited” you’re right, I really am lol a few years ago I had nothing to my name & the little things excite me. At one point I was so broke I came close to becoming a lab rat for a company that was testing out flu meds. Only reason I didn’t is because I only ever heard the ads on ChoiceFM 🤔 Don’t be too quick to judge people, you have no idea why they are how they are or why they do what they do. How are you using this crazy time as inspiration for your creative work? Were loving this covid-inspired capture from @devantecapersphotography featuring model @cecekamauoha. It feels like a window into someones home right now.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ As youve probably read recently, many creative folks in history used times of isolation to create some of their most iconic works. Frida Kahlo started painting during her forced convalescence at age 19. Shakespeare wrote King Lear + Macbeth under bubonic plague quarantine. And its thought that Isaac Newtons theory of gravity germinated during his isolation from the same plague as well.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Personally, Im finding it challenging to find creative flow right now. I feel like most of my days are spent just getting by and keeping my head above water. Creativity seems like a luxury in a time when going to the grocery store is a major event, but as this time goes on, I hope we can all find ways to stay creative.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I see glimmers of inspiration coming through, a lot of which are from seeing the ways that you all are pivoting + connecting.
