-U NI VE R S E- Today I worked on my new microscope for the very first time. 🌱 During the last months I decided to get my own private microscope. After a massive research I decided to go with a Panthera from @moticeurope because the price-performance ratio turned out to be amazing. My Panthera is now equipped with a 20 megapixel camera from a small German company. The software was developed by the local microscope seller himself and is just amazing! I used a lot of scopes and software but I just love this one because it has a lot of easy to use applications. 🌱 Today Id like to present you one of my first images showing the extremophile cyanobacterium Chroococcidiopsis in 10x DarkField. This genus holds a lot of surprises but is very difficult to identify if it comes down to species level even if youve got DNA sequences. The agglomerating character of the uni cellular and tiny Chroococcidiopsis makes it even harder because morphological features are hard to visualize and describe. 🌱 Im going to update you about my impressions with this microscope and also the story around Chroococcidiopsis. Consequently, the advent of precision medicine holds particular promise for combating these rare, highly fatal cancers. A new partnership between several NIH Institutes and Centers, funded by the NIH Directors Innovation Awards, will dramatically enhance the ability of NIH researchers to scrutinize the characteristics of AML and MDS patients cancer cells. Same Same . We primarily do PGS in our clinic and its safe to say that most US IVF clinics do a large proportion of them too. Bc of this we hatch embryos on Day 3 so that by the morning of Day 5, they are alreading extruding out the zona. This makes the biopsy faster and more efficient for the lab bc when we do not hatch we get embryos like pic 1. In those cases we would need to lazer the hole in the morning and then wait for the extrusion. Or, go in and pull out the cells, which we find more harmful. I recently conducted a survey that i sent to labs around the US and other countries and the vast majority hatch prior on Day 3, not the morning of biopsy, so we are in line with the majority. The 2 embryos at 4Aa i saw this week were actually a nice treat bc we did not need to biopsy them as it was not requested and we froze them instead. I just wanted to show you what 2 very similar aged embryos look like as the same grade but one hatched, one not. This way if you have embryos in either category you can relax and note that they are still the same. Embryos will hatch by themselves when its time! So let them! We just need to hatch Day 3 to make our work more efficient, so if you do not have hatching embryos on Day 5 and even Day 6......Dont Panic! . Enjoy the day! . “The artery of the Hour” The middle cerebral artery nourishes the lateral surface of the brain. Speaking, understanding what you read or hear, planing the next move in life, moving the other side of your body.... in short: running social media 🤪 are all functions that depend on the MCA. The MCA starts off the ICA on its first segment M1(sphenoparietal segment). Then it meets the ínsula and becomes M2 (insular segment) then goes on to the opercula (M3 segment) and turns into the cortical surface(M4 segment). At the surface the M4 MCA branches have actual first and last names... would you join me to put names to these numbers? I personally love how the brain looks in this picture... I remember I took it 10years ago when dreams of becoming a BNI neurosurgery resident were the fuel of my heart and the riddle on my dreams. Read on for tips I use when I look at an abdominal CT... 👨🏽💻Coming into radiology as someone who was mainly concerned with what was going on above the diaphragm I found the world of abdominal CT fairly daunting. But by getting to grips with the anatomy of the abdomen things became a whole lot clearer 👨🏽💻At this level of the abdomen we get a nice demonstration of the superior mesenteric artery – we can’t see the superior mesenteric vein here but normally the vein should lie to the right of the artery at the level of the pancreas, if this is reversed then consider intestinal malrotation which can predispose to midgut volvulus 👨🏽💻I always check to see there is a clean layer of fat surrounding the SMA – if this is infiltrated consider a malignant pathology such as a pancreatic tumour 👨🏽💻Always follow the vessels no matter which CT it is you’re looking at, be it head, neck, chest or abdomen. I always follow the portal veins within the liver formed at the confluence by the splenic vein (which runs posterior to the pancreas) and the superior mesenteric vein which runs vertically. In patients with liver cirrhosis and pancreatitis in particular you are looking for a filling defect or occluded vessel representing thrombosis 👨🏽💻There aren’t many retroperitoneal structures that cross the midline but the left renal vein is one of them – characteristically this passes anterior to the aorta from the left kidney to the IVC but in some people this can have a retroaortic course where it passes behind the aorta. I have seen the occasional incidental left renal vein thrombosis so it is worth checking for filling defects! This is a must in cases of renal cell carcinoma which likes to spread into the IVC via the renal veins 🔻@theradiologistpage - @theradiologistpage on Instagram

Keratoprosthesis is a surgical procedure where a diseased cornea is replaced with an artificial cornea. Traditionally, keratoprosthesis is recommended after a person has had a failure of one or more donor corneal transplants. More recently, a less invasive, non-penetrating artificial cornea has been developed which can be used in more routine cases of corneal blindness. While conventional cornea transplant uses donor tissue for transplant, an artificial cornea is used in the Keratoprosthesis procedure. The surgery is performed to restore vision in patients suffering from severely damaged cornea due to congenital birth defects, infections, injuries and burns. Keratoprotheses are made of clear plastic with excellent tissue tolerance and optical properties. They vary in design, size and even the implantation techniques may differ across different treatment centers. The procedure is done by ophthalmologists, often on an outpatient basis. Although many keratoprostheses have been developed, only four models are currently in commercial use: the Boston keratoprosthesis, Osteo-Odonto-Keratoprosthesis (OOKP), AlphaCor and the KeraKlear Artificial Cornea. Ever heard of #RedTide? Red tide is the common name for a type of harmful algae bloom (HAB). HAB’s are caused by a combination of factors relating to temperature, nutrient availability, salinity and other factors. Human activity and nutrient pollution has been proven to increase the chances of a HAB. Red tide HABs can be detrimental to all sorts of marine organisms, and can even cause human health problems. In recent years, Florida has been especially hard hit by red tide blooms, closing beaches in 2018 and causing local economies to suffer. Research is ongoing to study the effects of red tide on marine ecosystems. Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) are found in a broad range of environments, from hot springs to marine and fresh waters, and soil crusts to polar icecaps. By understanding exactly how cyanobacteria harvest light and convert it to energy, scientists may be able to engineer highly efficient photosynthetic units to help increase crop yields. In a paper published recently in Nature Plants (doi.org/10.1038/s41477-020-0718-z) Vincenzo Mascoli (PhD student at Vrije Universiteit @vuamsterdam) and colleagues investigated cyanobacteria from shaded environments to learn more about the trade-offs between covering the largest portion of the solar spectrum for photosynthesis and achieving the highest yields of energy conversion. Been told your egg has Vacuoles? . The egg at the bottom has Vacs. They are incredibly easy to distinguish and look like circles or craters inside the cytoplasm. If you compare the egg to the other 3 you can see the vast difference . Its not known what causes them, but vacs are almost always from the advanced aged patients and therefore would probably link to egg quality. Occasionally i will see them in younger patients but their frequency is much lower . So what do we do?! Well if you have enough eggs its not something to be concerned about bc you can exclude them. But if you only have 3-4 eggs like this case, we would inject and keep them separate. I tend to try and avoid them at injection and half of the time they do fert and divide, but i know they produce lower quality embryos, if a blast at all . These morphologies in older patients are common so i thought it would be nice to show you just what it is we mean when we tell you “your eggs have vacs” . Enjoy the week .
