There’ll be plenty posted on his fantastic Cricket career, but a few years ago I was asked to photograph Dean and the Australian Golf Champ, the late Ian Stanley on a round of Golf for promotional photo’s for Pay TV. It was one of the funniest jobs I’d ever done, they continually joked around and made it hard for me to concentrate to set up decent pics. Deano would suddenly crouch down and use his club like a billiard cue or lean on his bag to pose then suddenly turn it over emptying all his clubs over the green.. A fun morning with an amateur golfer that I’ll never forget, and a Top Class Cricketer that Australia and the Cricketing World will never forget.. Friedman was working as a stripper under the name Honey Harlowe (aka Hot Honey Harlowe) when she first met Bruce, then a fledgling comic, in a Baltimore hotel coffee shop. He was, she later wrote, the most handsome man Id seen in my life. They were married in 1951. At first, according to Gerald Nachmans book Seriously Funny: The Rebel Comedians of the 1950s and 1960s, Bruce tried to reform Honey and turn her into a respectable singer, dubbed The Singing Southern Belle, Honey Michelle. The couple did an act together, in which they both sang and teamed up on movie parodies. One was The Bride of Frankenstein, in which the monster picked Honey up in a pizza parlor. Bruce, who became known as a First Amendment martyr for his legal problems over onstage language, later referred to his wife in his act as the beautiful mama with the long red hair. Our hearts got out to 97 year old fly fishing legend and World War II vet, Frank Moore and his wife Jeanne who lost their home last week to a wildfire on the North Umpqua River in Oregon. We feel for all who have faced loss due to the wildfires throughout the Western US. Frank is a true gentleman that visited our Lynnwood show when debuting one of the best fly fishing films we have ever seen, Mending the Line. Frank, with an incredibly positive outlook told The Oregonian, “As long as we have each other, we can always start over. Even after 100 years.” We can all use some inspiration from Frank. Farman’s Pickles enjoyed a long run as one of the most successful operations in Enumclaw 🥒 It started in 1944, in a back yard in Enumclaw, where two brothers planted 10 acres of cucumbers and turned them into old-fashioned dill pickles. For nearly 50 years, the companys production and canning operations made Enumclaw smell like pickles. But in 1987, Farman Bros. Pickle Co. was acquired by Tacoma-based Nalley Fine Foods. The Porsche community mourns the death of Hans Mezger. The legendary engineer died on June 10, 2020 at the age of 90. Porsche owes him not only the Porsche 911s air-cooled, six-cylinder boxer engine but also the overall construction of the 917 and its twelve-cylinder engine as well as his creation of the TAG Turbo Formula One engine. I’ve never cared much about money. For me, there are so many other delights in life more stable and enduring—family, writing, nature, exercise. But when a check for $150,000, drawn on the account of the royal family in Monaco arrives by overnight FedEx express, it gets my attention. So, here’s the story. I received a lovely email from Stefano Casiraghi, Jr., grandson of Prince Rainier and Princess Grace (you know, Grace Kelly, the stunning movie star of the 1950s). In his very gracious note, he explained that he is getting married in August and his fiancé Emilia is a huge fan of my work. He invited me to the wedding as a surprise for his bride, offering to pick up all my expenses and those of any family or friends I might wish to accompany me. If this wasn’t possible, a personally inscribed copy of one of my novels would suffice. Well, we’re in a pandemic, so of course I had to decline. But I offered to inscribe and send a novel. Stefano sent me a very nice email in reply, indicating that his assistant Lou would be in touch regarding the details for mailing the book and also to provide me with a suitable thank you offering. Lou contacted me immediately with his address in Falls Church, VA, directing me to send him the book and asking me for a good mailing address so that he could arrange for me to receive a cashier’s check in the amount of $150,000 as a thank you from Stefano. I protested that it was a bit extravagant, but Lou insisted and said the amount was to cover expenses should I decided to attend the wedding and if not and if the money seemed excessive, I could always give it to charity. A fine sentiment, I thought. Lou said the cashier’s check would arrive the following day. This June, after years of persistence and advocacy, LSNC won a significant victory in federal court expanding LGBTQ rights. LSNC’s client, Harold, and his late husband Lowell met in 1961. They lived as a couple for more than 46 years and shared a marriage commitment ceremony, but were unable to legally marry until 2008. Unfortunately, Lowell passed away a few weeks after they were able to lawfully marry. Harold applied for and was denied Social Security survivor’s benefits because the couples marriage did not meet Social Security’s nine-month durational requirement. Led by our Ukiah office, LSNC represented Harold through the administrative appeals process and subsequent litigation in federal district court. LSNC attorneys argued that Harold and Lowell would have met the requirement but for Californias law prohibiting same sex marriage prior to (and then subsequent to) 2008; and that Social Securitys reliance on an unconstitutional barrier was itself a violation of Harold’s constitutional rights. The federal district court ruled in Harold’s favor.
