I’ve been taking care of my niece and nephew for the past month. It’s been wonderful. And, it’s also been stressful/difficult. It’s made me insecure and question everything. Am I a good aunt? This Mother’s Day is really hitting me hard. I miss my Mom, who is in Charleston, so much, and my MIL who is normally at our house on the daily from Spartanburg. Two and half years ago, my bf and I realized we weren’t happy with the way things were going financially, or in our professional lives. At that point, I felt stuck. I was stuck where I lived, I was stuck with people who affected me negatively, I was stuck in a revolving door of jobs that left me unfulfilled. But the solution was always “someday”. Why? Why not now? So we moved. We had just enough money to make it all the way across the country, and we were banking everything on this incredibly terrifying drastic change. Since we made that ONE decision, our lives have altered for the better and continues to do so. A week ago, we realized once again that we were stuck. Not as bad as before, but stuck nonetheless. Instead of saying “someday”, we said right now. We did not wait three years to get to a point that we just couldn’t take it anymore. We sacrificed something we both thought we needed to keep going. It was the thing that kept us sane. But we gave it up anyway because it was holding us back financially. As soon as we gave it up we realized it was holding us back in many ways. And in just one week all the things we were unhappy about have been replaced with something better. You don’t have to wait for someday to be happy. Be happy right now. Make that change, take the plunge. It’s scary. And it doesn’t ALWAYS work out. But if you don’t try, it NEVER WILL! Childrens Cancer Networks September 20th hero is Faith! Faith found out when she was 9 years old that she had a large brain tumor, medullablastoma. She was sick for 4 months before the doctors found the tumor. She went through two brain surgeries and 6 weeks of chemo and 6 weeks of radiation afterwards, followed by 6 more months of chemotherapy. Faith is now 15 years old and would like to learn to speak different languages. She would love to have long, thick hair again. As she grows older she would like to get a job in interior design. She looks forward to traveling with her family and making memories. Opening doors to help others and giving them a helping hand is something Faith enjoys doing for people. At some point, Mal and I graduated from two twin beds to each having our own bedroom. Still, for the years that followed, I would fake cry outside of Mallory’s door at bedtime until she would let me come sleep with her in her room. I would try* to sleep in my own room but I was always too scared to fall asleep. I’d fake cry until she opened the door and let me in because to be with Mallory was to be safe and no longer afraid. Even though she knew it was fake, she undoubtedly let me in every time, and with her I could finally find rest. Well friends, it’s that time again. About to undergo my third endometriosis excision surgery in 4 years. It’s very fitting to the reality of endo that I was celebrating being “healed” last year, and this year has been yet another whirlwind of pain and new symptoms. •• Beyond the all too familiar pain, I started noticing some subtle changes that led to the discovery of endo in my urinary tract that is causing a blockage in my ureter and severe dilation of my kidney. Urinary tract endo affects only 1-6% of those with endo and often goes unnoticed. The fact that I caught it early and paid attention to my body ended up saving my kidney. •• Each surgery gets harder, physically and emotionally. But, I am lucky to have one of, if not the world’s top endo specialists as my surgeon this time around. And with the encouragement of my family and friends, I am going into this one with positivity and gratitude. Very often we forget the people who buy the tickets that keep our shows alive. I didn’t sleep for a week before making my debut in @dearevanhansen it was like hopping on a freight train going 100mph. People need people. This is my 91 yo adopted Puerto Rican abuela, Carmen! Carmen lived on the backside of my shabby Puerto Rican apartment, where I hung my clothes. Every week she made a point to beat me to my laundry, so she could fold it for me. She’d come around to my front door, laundry in a perfectly folded tower. 5 min later (she did this every time) she’d bring another article of clothing she “forgot” to fold. I think it was just her excuse to hang. She’d give me hell for my-not-so-modest-underwear, scoffing “where’s your butt go nena!?” 😂 We understood each other with our combined Spanglish, and our combined adoration for the other. She’d hold my hand and I’d let her, because that’s what she needed. She’d never let me leave her house empty handed, always sending me out her door with something from her home. I’d thank her politely and soon had a small pile of complete random shit, like a ceramic basket of eggs, a stuffed Mini Mouse and a Jesus candle. It’s just these little, real moments with people that make life so so good. Today the matriarch of the Walsh family - an only child (like me) who raised 5 sons and never lost her quick tongue or strong democratic beliefs - died peacefully in her sleep. I thought she would outlive us all. She remembered EVERYTHING right up until 95 (and she didn’t let you forget). My daughter and I don’t use shampoo or any hair products. It started with my daughter refusing to comply with hair washing when she was a toddler (now she is 5). I decided to not force her to wash her hair with shampoo and lo and behold she has the most beautiful locks. I joined her at the beginning of May and it has been about six weeks since my last shampooing. At first my hair was greasy and I hid it by wearing a thick headband. Then it found it’s new normal and it looks healthier than ever before. My tips are finally in good condition. It makes sense that human hair has been perfectly fine for thousands of years without hair products- I became conditioned to think this was necessary.
