There was no way I was leaving Houston without visiting the Third Ward. The way Sheila Jackson Lee spoke about it, the way people inside that church beamed with pride at the mention of their home, the way they felt seen. The source of something good in this world. A little piece inside of me died to be so brutally reminded that his life - that black lives - can mean so little. So don’t just move onto something else next week. This is deeper than a black square, a hashtag, a donation... Check yourselves. Check your friends. Check your FAMILY. Talk to your kids. Practice what you preach to them. Covid_19 adds a new dimension of risk to the job for firefighters - both on and off the front lines. Fire crews are already armed with significant personal protective equipment while theyre battling active fires which includes gloves, face and neck shrouds, and protective eyewear. When they are at base camps, firefighting personnel are required to wear face masks and maintain physical distancing. Meals are staggered to keep crews separated, and everyone gets regular temperature checks. The crews, which number in the hundreds, would ordinarily set up base camp on small grounds near the fires, but due to COVID-19 concerns, they are housed in hotels or set up on vacant fairgrounds outfitted with several hand-washing stations. In 2018, we had the privilege of assisting our homie @maxsansing on an incredibly meaningful project, coordinated by @youngchicagoauthors & @kevincoval for People’s Law Office. Sansing’s piece is titled “The Chairman” and is dedicated to Black Panther Party Leader and revolutionary, Fred Hampton. In December 1969, Hampton was shot and killed in his bed during a predawn raid at his Chicago apartment by a tactical unit of the Cook County States Attorneys Office in conjunction with the Chicago Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation; during the raid, another Panther (Mark Clark) was killed and several seriously wounded. Photo by @nikakramer ▪️We are the poison, We are the cure //// The environment i was given for the UN Berlin Biennale project is a 32 square meters desert space. // I imagined a post apocalyptic time, the aftermath of the end of the world or at least; the end of the earth as we know it. No ressources, no humans, no life. Working on this project in a critical time where the vital signs of the earth are threaten by ever growing wildfires, the continuing global warming, ocean acidification... I wanted to tell a tale of HOPE. In this time when we feel that the earth and everything might die; we, humans, are waiting for someone stronger, more powerful, more resourceful than us to make a change, or that some kind of Superhero with great powers will save us and save the planet. Save it from our mistakes, (not to say the disasters that we have caused), and meanwhile; we are doing NOTHING when In fact WE could be the ones saving it, saving US and the future generations. Let’s change the way we see things, experience life a different way and let’s fall in love with the planet again, look at everything she gave us, the most spectacular horizons and species and we are the lucky ones who can experience them with deep feelings and emotions. We destroyed, we can rectify. We are the Super heroes. I use comic books in most of my works and often will attempt to tell a story. In this particular project I chose images of our friendly neighborhood hero Spider-Man but also used Venom, is worst enemy. They are representing humans as the poison but also as the cure. Painted around a week ago on Wurundjeri Land in solidarity with our First Nations people during Reconciliation Week. This space previously had an indigenous mural across it on a number of boards but over the years that gradually fell apart and the space was damaged and in a state of alternating between graff and buff. I painted the 2nd image in Jan this year on Invasion Day as an act of solidarity, doing something extra I could do. It was subsequently vandalised (not with graff) but with anarchist and racial slurs. Hard to believe that even in Northcote, a progressive suburb, this solidarity still invited backlash, still made people feel the need to attack. These slurs were then censored by a community member, and then somebody else proceeded to attempt to repaint my initial piece. I contacted council in the hopes of being able to legally organise this wall to become home to another protected mural, either by myself with indigenous agency in my design or by indigenous artists however as it is owned by VicTracks we were unable to make the project happen, so I proceeded to once again illegally stand in solidarity. This series of events, to me, speaks volumes, especially with the subsequent series of events the world has witnessed over the last week. Stand up in solidarity. Donate your time, art, voice, money or any extra skills you may have. No matter how little reach or effect you think you may have. 🎨 M U R A L S 🎨 I have a long way to go on my mural journey but I’m proud of starting it. For so long I was stuck and kept talking myself out of it. Then finally I did one wall and then another and then another. From agency to brand to bedrooms to hoarding, I can paint wherever and whenever I want. Blending lines between the past, present, and future with my second ice portal mural ever. I have spent years figuring out how to accomplish something like this at this scale and honestly my advice for anyone starting ANYTHING is just to start. When I stepped back after what felt like the final line of spray paint to hold the photo I took of this ice cave in March up to the mural I just created, I was honestly in awe. I feel like this idea has been trying to be born through me for so long, and I am happy to surrender to it completely. Indigo Arts Alliance is proud to have partnered on the 754 Congress St. Art Installation project titled Counting from Thirteen, our Black is Beautiful street mural and helping to document his George Floyd mural in downtown Portland. His background in traditional graffiti led him to creating large-scale mural work as well as hand lettered signage. His signature ‘gem’ style of work is a geometric breakdown of letterforms with shadows and highlights embedded within, to create depth and movement throughout the pieces. His pieces tend to be bold, colorful and clever; often including statements within. These statements can be literal or figurative, but often bringing attention to a social or cultural issue. Six Feet of Distance [SFOD] is a new platform which assembles a number of pre-existing online Detroit art + social practice projects in a way that aligns with the velocity of the new social and economic realities of the current novel coronavirus-induced crisis. Six Feet of Distance will be an open-ended, self-curating process which will invite and publish thoughtful responses to what it means to live through such an unprecedented collapse of familiarity and everyday life. We shall begin with only a few reflections and works but expect to build with input from across the spectrum. We start from the perspective that we do not yet know what these new realities are but that collectively we are better equipped to determine and perhaps even influence them. Among the content with which we are launching the project is a public questionnaire that will form an ongoing health check on how the Detroit art community is coping and adapting. We shall also include a calendar (to be regularly updated) that lists online events as well as resources for living with socially distanced actions. Finally, we shall publish meditations of varying kinds and length on the significance of the moment we’re living through. Six Feet of Distance is a durational project that will last only as long as we live under a shelter-in-place order in the time of COVID-19. ‘Lion’s Gate’ mural in progress. Imagery is inspired by the Art Deco period, both in terms of design elements and colour palette. It is my intention that this reference will create stylistic dialogue with other Art Deco design and architectural features in the city. The composition includes two cat-like sentinels and the stylized suggestion of arches or doorways, water and tree or plant-like forms. The work’s title alludes to the alignment between the Earth and the star Sirius, that occurs in August (at the time of painting), which has been observed since the times of ancient Egypt. This cosmological positioning is honoured as a time of increased energetic activation and connection between the physical and spiritual realms. The design includes a numerological code that signifies this important time on the planet. Happy 70th Anniversary Pathfinders! • A Pathfinder character with spray paint on a brick wall for Meeting of Styles, which was a big graffiti and street art event in Chicago this past weekend. I went with my fun cartoon style this time. It was a great weekend painting and connecting with great talented individuals. This was one of two walls painted this past weekend. Shout out to my Pathfinder friends at Georgia-Cumberland who welcomed me into their hearts as speaker for their annual camporee this past weekend too. And shout out to my home state IL. Pathfinders! The Castleman statue has been taken down. I’d like to commend @mayorgregfischer for acting. It’s removal has been jammed up in the court system by historical architecture and neighborhood groups filing appeals for a year. Like you, our customers and community, New York Distilling Company is grappling with how to recognize the protests going on all around us, and how to make a positive difference. We’re a small company with limited resources. We don’t pretend to have particular insights on the big picture – we make gin and rye— but we love our community and its diversity and feel the desire and need to be purposeful and attentive. Within our industry, a tragedy occurred last Friday. Du Nord Craft Spirits, located in Minneapolis on the same block as a police precinct, was set on fire and then deluged with 400,000 gallons of water from their sprinkler system. The damage was devastating. Du Nord is one of the few minority-owned craft distillers in the United States, co-founded by Shanelle and Chris Montana in 2013. Chris, the immediate past President of our national association, is one of the most respected and admired leaders of our industry. We cannot lose his voice and presence. This week we are thinking of Shanelle and Chris and directing our efforts toward helping their distillery recover. We are making an initial donation today of $1,000 to the GoFundMe campaign initiated by the American Craft Spirit Association, which you can find below And we hope to do more. Help us support Du Nord. Either donate directly to the fund or buy our spirits. Because of strange, frustrating and anachronistic NY State Liquor Authority regulations we are not allowed to say things like “all profits” this week will be donated. We are not allowed to specifically tie a percentage donation, or a ‘dollars-per-bottle-sold’ donation to a particular charity or cause. So we won’t. But we can say that your direct purchases from us will help us help Du Nord. And that this week, that’s our only interest. Our industry needs to become more diverse.
