Thank you @biglifeafrica for all the care you gave him #Repost @biglifeafrica ・・・ MOURNING TIM, ONE OF AFRICA’S LAST GREAT TUSKERS The only marks on his body were the imprints left by other elephants. Perhaps it was his companions, trying to lift him back on his feet. Push the life back into him. Tim is dead, and at Big Life we’re all in a state of shock. One elephant’s life shouldn’t matter more than another. But in this moment, this one does. As one of the biggest elephants in Africa, he was a magnificent relic of a bygone era when his kind where more common. But to us, and anyone who spent any time with him, there was more to it than that. He was one of the only elephants of his size who calmly tolerated human presence, and placed a dangerously naïve amount of trust in our species. Over the last five decades, Tim became one of Kenya’s most famous elephants and one of the continent’s last great tuskers, with tusks each weighing in excess of 100 pounds. They were an astounding burden to carry, not least because they made him an incredibly valuable target for any poacher. He witnessed half a century of changes in the Greater Amboseli ecosystem, and those changes had nearly killed him three times already. Three times, he was speared by farmers defending their crops against his night-time raids. The spears missed organs, but the close shaves were frequent reminders of his vulnerability. Last year, he got stuck in the Kimana swamp, and were it not for a quick coordinated response to pull him out, that would have been the end. Sadly, this now is. We are hopeful that his end was natural, and all indications are that that was the case. There are no obvious wounds on his body, nor any sign of foul play, but we need to wait for the full post-mortem test results from Kenya Wildlife Service before we will know for sure. Tim leaves a huge hole in the heart of the Amboseli ecosystem, and on the earth. Thankfully, his genes live on in many of the other Amboseli elephants. Even giants fall The circle of life is harsh and relentless. The rotting carcass of an Elephant bull provides shade during the heat of the day to a nomadic male Lion. The smell was putrid, the flies were intense, yet this Lion stays true to his claimed prize and continued to feed on the carcass throughout the day. The Elephant bull died of natural causes during a fight with another younger bull for dominance. Mavuso, as he was named, was estimated to be around 55 years old and formed part of one of the original Tuskers introduced to Pilanesberg from Kruger in 1998. At the root of the rhino poaching crisis is the myth that rhino horn contains curative properties. Critically Endangered black rhinos face an extremely high risk of extinction in the wild. North Luangwa National Park’s black rhino population was poached to extinction in the 1990s, but rhinos were later reintroduced in the 2000s. This population of black rhinos is currently the only black rhino population in all of Zambia. @frankfurt.zoological.societys partnered with the Zambian Department of National Parks and Wildlife to create the North Luangwa Conservation Program which protects and manages an operational area in North Luangwa National Park. With support from the Rhino Recovery Fund, the North Luangwa Conservation Program will secure this population of black rhinos and will maintain a ‘zero poached’ status through governance assistance, increased intelligence and investigations, and support to the Zambian Department of National Parks and Wildlife. Adult rhinos have no predators aside from humans. They are not heading towards extinction due to the actions of any other species except us. WE are the cause of THEIR decline and so it is OUR responsibility to ensure that the rhino species across the world do not go extinct. Look at your fingernails. Rhino horn is made of the exact same material as your nails - Keratin. Yet rhinos are being killed at devastating rates so humans can use their horn as a status symbol and to ‘treat’ illnesses. This is WRONG. Rhino conservation has made huge steps forward and we have the incredible humans on the ground risking their lives every day to thank for this. Especially today. But still, we look forward to the year when rhino populations are thriving to the point that we no longer need this day of conservation awareness. 𝐓𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐮𝐞! 🐘💉 Earlier this week, our team in Zinave National Park noticed an #elephant that was limping badly and dragging its back foot. The veterinary team from @savingthesurvivors were called in to assist. After sedating the elephant the painful wound was cleaned and treated. We were also very relieved to see that the injury was not as a result of a snare, as was first thought. The ranger teams from Peace Parks and the National Administration for Conservation Areas have been working around the clock, removing more than 4 000 snares from the park over the past 18 months. The elephant was soon on his feet again and off to find the rest of the herd - hopefully feeling much better than before! 💖 Through partnerships with organisations like @debeersgroup and @ezemvelokznwildlife, 169 elephants have been rewilded to Zinave over the past 5 years. - @peaceparks on Instagram

WWF:n projektilla pyritään laajentamaan lajin elinalueita. Tällä hetkellä pensassarvikuonoja elää luonnossa kaikkiaan noin 5 500 yksilöä, kun 25 vuotta sitten niitä oli ainoastaan noin 2 500. Here, Najin, one of the last two northern white rhinos on the planet, recovers after her latest ovum pick-up procedure. At the end of a demonstration on Saturday, protestors toppled the statue of John A. Macdonald in Place du Canada. The statue’s head fell off when it hit the ground. You certainly don’t see that everyday! 😳⠀ ⠀ We witnessed a newly born calf that had been born very recently go and start suckling a nearby female black rhino for milk. The two black rhinos were very remarkably gentle and patient with the calf allowing it to suckle with its nervous mother close by. A sus 51 años de edad ya ha sobrepasado la espectativa de vida de su especie, la cual se encuentra en un rango de 40 a 50 años. Sin embargo, el record mundial lo marcó Sana, una rinoceronte blanco que falleció en 2019, a sus 55 años de edad, en el zoológico Planete Sauvage de Francia. Al igual que Sana, nuestra Josefina recibe constante atención y cuidados, pero hay algo en lo que nadie puede intervenir: ¡su cuerno! Josefina odia el pelo largo, bueno el cuerno, pues el mismo esta conformado por pelos adheridos fuertemente por queratina. Josefina lo lima constantemente dándole una forma cuadrada. As a shy, nocturnal herbivore, the pygmy hippo eluded Western science until 1840. One of the best memories and experience that I have in my field of work is the opportunity that I got to work with elephants. Seven elephant calves stood in front of me as I arrived at WTIs Center for wildlife resuce and rehabilitation in Assam in 2010. Each calf had its own story but all them were rescued from humans. Either they were rescued from the man made trench or from the angry mob of villagers ready to kill the innocent calf. Here they were getting ready to go back to the wild,where they belong. I still remember all of them and their behaviour very clearly. All of them were hand raised and released back to the wild. And two of the elephants that I know, Soni and Tinku were also accepted by wild herd. 💞 Nella giornata dedicata ai nonni, noi festeggiamo il nostro Toby 🦏, che da oltre 40 anni convive insieme agli ippopotami 🦛. I numerosi cuccioli di ippopotamo che sono nati al Parco in questi anni hanno probabilmente colmato il vuoto che ha lasciato la compagna Sugar nella sua vita, grazie alla loro esuberanza e irriverenza. Noi non possiamo che vedere il nostro Toby come un saggio nonno che, a suo modo, si prende cura dei suoi “nipoti”.
