10 variations on Jimi Hendrixs - Little Wing What makes this song great? Heh. Theres an industrious gentleman out there making a bit of cash off that question. Breaking down songs into beats, modes, harmonies and the like. And its all fascinating... in a technical sort of way. And good for him. Truly. But he actually misses the real point - the honest answer - every single time. Take a snapshot of depression or anger - a moment of joy or intense pleasure.. a lot of good songs evoke these rather base emotional responses - unconsciously taking us back in our own lives to when we felt that way last.. or, perhaps, most intensely. But, much like a photograph, good songs capture that one particular moment in time. Largely, a single emotion on two-dimensional display. A truly great piece of music takes you on a journey down the path of the human experience itself. What is that exactly? I suspect for most of its small variations on struggle, pain, joy - interspersed with really intense moments of those feelings - then back to normalcy - whatever that is - for a while. Until the next intense moment... be it depression, confusion, pleasure - or, more often, some mix of several at once. Listen to the original Little Wing with that in mind. Its more of a movie than a photograph... following us year by year through our lives. Capturing those high, lows, and all the subtle things that happened inbetween. Writing a great song is actually about understanding the human experience... in all its nuances and complexities. Not much to do with lydian, aeolian, etc. Fifty years after his passing, Jimi continues to inspire with his inate grasp of human nature and the intuitive ability he had to turn that into song. It resonates because what hes telling is an immortal story.. one that transcends nation, race, age and gender...one of life in all its three-dimensional tragedy and glory. And *that* is what makes this song great. My favorite drummer has died. Tony Allen. I have not processed it at all and dont usually jump to posting on social media after something this heavy happens, but I feel the immediate need to write, in order to process my feelings about him and outwardly express how important a figure he was in music. Tony Allen was a humble giant, whose otherworldly musicality has lifted our little world to a higher place. The universe was in his drumming. His drumming possessed history, it contained spirits, it communicated messages. A musical instrument, when wielded with a certain magical ability and intention, becomes a kind of weapon, a unique vessel through which we understand humanity and see ourselves in ways that words cannot describe. It forms a direct line starting from the player’s heart, moving through their entire physical and emotional body, and jumps out onto someone else. Tony harnessed that power, and he had it all the time, with every single note he played. Tony Allen was the prime example of a drummer’s ability to harness the magic of music. One of the things I admired most about Tony was his quiet yet thunderous presence, on the drums and off. When he played the drums, he was so calm and effortless that he barely looked like he was moving a muscle. Do you know how rare that is, for a drummer? As a bandleader (Fela’s and otherwise) he let the band play their hearts out while also having them wrapped around his finger, ready to smack the snare drum at any moment to cue a dynamic shift, reigning everyone in. However, like many houses of worship during the 2020 pandemic, its 7,200-seat Worship Center has switched over to become a streaming-only broadcast site, a change that will continue to be the case throughout the remainder of this year. To retain some physical sense of community, Willow Creek set up a large tent in its parking lot to host nearly 30 congregational events between August 19 and October 6. This is one of the earliest Peaking Lights setups , totally impractical way of playing! There were so many wires it took us about an hour to just set it up. I really miss playing this way. It was insanely hard to travel with. I really want to write another record with all this homemade stuff and play it live but audiences seem to have become less patient and expect everything to be played *exactly like the record. Less and less people seem to find failure as attractive and blown out fuzz drenched warmth intoxicating. It was always a struggle with most sound persons to describe that the electric buzz was part of it 😂 there were a few sound people over the years that still stick out in my mind! One woman in vancouver I think her name was Swan and this guy at Lopan in CPH ... Two shows at an actual club where they just seemed to nail it! When we first went overseas we had to downsize which was still massive! Then we started having kids and we had to downsize again because we were travelling with the added baby gear. Now slowly over the years we’re building it back up :) I’d like to get to this stage again, both of us sitting down with a rediculous amount of dusty gear 😂✌️ - @peakinglights on Instagram

Been working on recreating some serum patches on the modular. The first one is one of my favorites “ such relaxation” hard to beat but I got close with the expressive detuning patch and just manually wiggling in the pitch LFOs. The second one was an attempt to get close to one of the “monster- growling-bass” type patches. To get close to the wavetable scanning effect I used some sequenced modulation of the wave shape on the @verboselectronics complex oscillator. Also used some fm from the modulation osc. the fm amount was also sequenced on the multistage. Still not quite there. My parents went to school 25 years ago with a guy named Marshall. He sang backgrounds in my Mom’s final college performance. My Dad reconnected with him in the 90’s and was working at Yamaha. Marshall would send CD’s of new artists that hadn’t been released yet to our house for Christmas (John Mayer was one) so my Dad gave Marshall a custom Yamaha acoustic guitar. Marshall has used that guitar on every hit record he has done for 20 years. He and My parents lost contact shortly after my dad gave him the guitar. Fast forward to 2018, I meet my good friend @williejones. Willie tells me he’s managed by a guy named Jonnie. Turns out Jonnie worked at a label with Marshall for years, and was sending Willie’s songs to him for feedback. I was the producer on those songs. When the 3 of us made a trip to Nashville and I got to meet Marshall and tell him I was Gary and Nina’s son. When he heard that, he took us to his studio and I got to see and play the Acoustic my dad gave him 20 something years ago. Life is crazy..... - @_seancook on Instagram

I had been thinking of buying a Marimba One for a long time. I have always liked them, and their sound is undoubtedly excellent. A few months ago I decided and ordered a Marimba One Izzy with classic resonators, enhanced keyboard, and wood frames (along with the cases). Luckily my marimba arrived at my house yesterday. The first thing that caught my attention is how perfectly packaged they sent it to me, they did not skimp on anything so that my marimba could reach my house in the best possible way. It also came perfectly stored in the cases, which are comfortable, light, and very easy to handle! The next thing that caught my attention was the ease of ensemble it. Then followed the colors of the resonators, frames, bars…. I honestly think it is the most beautiful marimba I have ever seen!! And to finish, I leave the best, the sound. I was sure it would sound great, but I couldnt have guessed how good. From the first moment, it resonates and fills my room with a warm and pleasant sound. About 4 years ago my dear @julioreyesmusic and I flew to London to live and share one of a kind experience: recording and conducting the London Symphony Orchestra. It was simply surreal to be standing in that podium, in front of such a legendary group of musicians.. That moment changed my life.. recording sufjan steven’s “the bqe” at legacy studio a509. this was the first time i engineered a session like this and i remember being as stressed as possible 😂 small string section, horns and woodwinds, piano, celeste, a good amount of percussion, drums, electric bass and electric guitar. we tried using one capsule of an @akgaudio c24 for the center decca and two vintage @telefunken_mics elam251e (courtesy of @je.ff.ki.rby ) for the sides, but we got too much rf sadly so we wound up going with @neumann.berlin km130s instead + a @royerlabs sf24 and b&k wides. - @ootermindstudiopics on Instagram
