Two men died, another was hospitalized in grave condition and three others were recovering after six separate incidents of suspected fentanyl overdoses in Pasadena on Friday, authorities said. The overdoses took place at six different locations throughout the course of the day, Pasadena police Lt. William Grisafe said. All six victims, all men who ranged in age from their 30s to their 50s, were taken to hospitals, he said. Two of them died a short time later, he said. A third was listed in grave condition and not expected to survive, according to Grisafe. The other three patients were doing well and expected to be released from hospital care soon, he said. Were very excited to announce that Salt Lake City is now home to one of the most advanced #recycling centers in the country! The new Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) was built and is operated by @wastemanagement. Its where all of Salt Lake City’s residential recycling is sorted before the material goes on to its final destination to turn into new goods. It’s a single-stream operation and sorts empty plastic bottles and containers, metal cans, cardboard, paper, and newspaper. The facility is outfitted with the latest recycling technology and equipment. This matters because consumer material continues to change at a rapid pace and the sheer quantity of recyclable material being processed has also gone up dramatically– and will only continue to grow. So we need facilities that can keep up, especially with the inundation of “contamination” in recycling bins (these are items that aren’t recyclable in the blue bin, but can overwhelm these facilities – like plastic bags, the many types of new-fangled packaging, Styrofoam, as well as things that obviously shouldn’t go in there like hoses, bowling balls, food, clothing, trash etc. See our Stories for a glimpse.) What’s different at this MRF, you might ask? A good analogy is that it’s like going from the Flintstones with the old recycling technology to the Jetsons with the new technology . . . overnight. The facility is comprised of a network of machinery equipped with advanced automation capabilities and sorting optics. Rotating fiber screens, ballistic motion separators, 2D and 3D optical sorters, and barrel magnets are among technologies used to separate materials. More than 2.5 miles of fast-moving conveyor belts carry materials through this single-stream processing facility. The MRF has been operating for a month now and the improvements in recovery quantities and end-product quality are astounding. It’s also helping the City with fuel and time savings. Due to its closer location in SLC, we’ve been able to cut 1.5 hours from each of our recycling truck’s daily drives. [AD] The cordless Tracksaw @festool TSC55 is gonna make cutting boards and sheet goods to a manageable size in my driveway much faster and a more pleasant task. - Dust collection has always been important to me, since I am not eager to mess up my lungs. With a standard shop vac, I ran through these filter bags pretty quickly. Which was not really sustainable or cost efficient. The CT-VA 20 in combination with the CTM 26E is gonna solve that issue for me. The cyclone separates the dust, which piles up in the transparent box. Inspired by the new icon in our skyline, the shopping bag reflects light like a mirror. The depot, entirely shrouded in 1664 mirror panels, is designed by the architectural firm @mvrdv. In autumn 2021, the doors will open to the public. Good news! A team of scientists from Northwestern University in Illinois (US) have found a way to break down the bonds that make polyethylene. Polyethylene is one of the most common types of plastic. We find it many household products like plastic bags, bottles, etc. The process cuts the plastic polymer turning it into liquid oil. It does that through a catalytic technique using metal nanoparticles to chop the polymer apart. This liquid oil can then be used for other purposes, like lubricant, and scientists are looking into other potential uses. The strong bonds that make polyethylene are what makes plastic so durable. It is why plastic never degrades. I WAS WRONG - You can recycle blister packets! Did you know this? It turns out Terracycle recycle the plastic packets that contain medicinal tablets - with drop-off locations across the UK. Recycling is a minefield. As we know, so much of the plastic recycling we put into our council bins doesnt end up getting recycled with some of it dumped in South East Asia - not ideal... Ive cut down my plastic so dramatically I barely use any at all - but one area of my life Ive struggled to do this is healthcare. This is where Terracycle comes in. Once youve dropped off your empty blister packets, the plastic is separated by polymer type and extruded into plastic pellets to be repurposed. Great! *The bad news bit.....* Currently there are only 13 drop off centres for blister packet, our closest is in Stockport with other UK participating pharmacies in Newcastle, Stamford, Wellingborough, Great Yarmouth, Tiverton, Falmouth, Brighton, London & Belfast. Any pharmacies can participate though, so maybe thats a question for your local pharmacist next time you pop in! Have you used this scheme before?
