We are temporarily closing our brick and mortar shop at 52 Clinton Street again. It’s been a long and bumpy road since March, when the pandemic first really hit Toronto and Canada. When we re-opened in August, we did so with limited hours and the hope of increasing our hours as things went on, as we all got used to the new normal. Unfortunately in Toronto, we’ve recently seen some high numbers of Covid cases. We’re not sure if the provincial government is going to announce any changes to Stages or restrictions, so for now we’re taking this step as we wait and see what will happen over the next weeks. Are we making the right decision? We have no idea! The future is murky at best. We are trying our best to be wise and to make good decisions for our community and our team and for the longevity of our shop as a whole, and we truly wouldn’t able to make these sorts of decisions without knowing that our community has been supporting us all along. We are so thankful for you all. Like all of you, we want our kids to be in school safely, we want to be able to enjoy meeting up with friends and family, we want to welcome you all into our shop and talk about stationery and not about sanitizing our hands. We want everyone to be safe and healthy. We are hoping this closure will be shorter than the first one, in March that lasted until well into the summer. Please stay with us! You can sign up for our weekly email newsletter to stay up to date. We try not to be spammy, and we mostly cover what’s new and what’s coming, as well as shop news. Esse espaço sem fim é a biblioteca da Tabakalera, espaço cultural localizado em San Sebastian, País Basco. É uma biblioteca com caráter um pouco incomum, sem paredes, sem distinção de alas - por exemplo a área infantil não fica separada dos adultos - a locação não é apenas de livros mas também de equipamentos fotográficos, computadores, instrumentos musicais, pequenas estações de fab-lab espalhadas pelo espaço, um estúdio de chroma-key, laboratórios para desenvolvimento e programação de jogos e claro, uma sessão de auto edição, onde encontrei meu próprio livro publicado pela @vibrant.editora em 2015. Quem nos recebeu foi a querida Eneka que esteve na terceira edição da Plana. Ela trabalha na programação da biblioteca e as oficinas, com uma equipe que não estava lá. Ela me contou que estão de greve a dois meses, pedindo melhores salários e consequentemente a biblioteca está fechada ao público. Want to take the time to thank everyone that came out Friday and supported your boy for the @ocd.cleaners opening reception. I’m still riding the wave of energy and love. Saw old friends, met new ones, and was overwhelmed by the about of strangers that made an effort to speak to me about the brand and how it inspires them to follow their own pursuits in life. This is what my short film “The Lost Ones”, was about - Overcoming your inner fears, drowning out the noise, and finding your community. Based off the feedback we will post the links up soon and are starting to write the next segment of the series of short films produced by OCD. I failed to mention someone while introducing the people that worked on the project with me at the opening - @danicharming 🏆🧡🙌 was a contributor in many areas of the film and is my rock. She is one of my major creative consultants of OCD and keeps me on track. I couldn’t do the things I’ve achieved over the last few years without her. A b/w pic for two b/w films. I was able to go to the archive today for the first time since June. I picked up a huge amount of stuff to work on, including the originals for these two films by the incredible Christopher Harris. Chris and I have been talking for a couple of years about bringing his negatives to the Academy, and it finally started happening this past January. At @canyoncinema ‘s instigation, Reckless Eyeballing will soon be digitized, and I’ll follow that up with preservation and printing on film. I’m also excited to work on Chris’s 60-minute still/here, to make new 16mm elements, prints, and also digitize it for digital exhibition as well. Chris only ever had one print of the film, so it will be fantastic to make it more widely available! - @preservationinsanity on Instagram
Record Store Day Drop 2 is TOMORROW! Here are some important reminders! 1. Rhino will be open for those with reservations ONLY between 9 am and 1 pm. The store will RE-OPEN to the public at 2 pm! 2. For those with reservations! When you arrive (NO MORE THAN 30 MINUTES BEFORE YOUR DESIGNATED TIME SLOT) bring your confirmation, your ID, and a mask! Find the bearded man by the gray back door who will check your ID and confirmation and then escort you to your line spot. 3. All RSD product can be conveniently found in one roped off area which you will enter directly into! 4. Don’t forget to check the endcaps for even more RSD releases! 5. Distribution was the most foreign part of magazine publishing for us. In the sights for the entire time, but dreading figuring it out until we absolutely had to: procrastination at its finest. We briefly had an excuse to postpone it even further when the first edition came out because covid hit, and the retailers shut their doors… :(. . However, it ended up being only a series of simple emails and phone calls that had us figuring it out. Months earlier we had contacted some distributors (having no idea how it worked), and they said they couldn’t consider it until I sent them a finished magazine. Which was funny because to get a barcode, you need a distributor, and to get a distributor, you need a magazine with the printed barcode on it, lol… . Any way, we contacted BC Ferries, and they put us in touch with a wholesaler who then told us we needed to be with a distributor that they already work with, like Disticor, and if we did that, FOLKLIFE would be perfect on the ferries. They were the same distributor we had previously inquired with. Soon after sending the finished product, we got an email from them saying: . “Thank you for sending a copy of Folklife for review. I think you and your team have done a really nice job putting the issue together. We would be happy to represent Folklife at the newsstand.” . This was the most exciting news ever! And we couldn’t imagine just how exciting until right now, as FOLKLIFE has started hitting the shelves. And sure, newsstand sales make no money for anyone, but we knew that, and it’s just not an industry you can be in for the moola). . The first one we found was Vancouver’s Whole Foods on Robson. We went in for a delicious muffin, having low expectations that it would actually be there…and there it was. A huge stack on the first shelf! We were so excited, hopping around, taking pictures, telling the staff what a great magazine it is, buying a few for ourselves (they need to sell, so we can get the next edition everywhere). . Then we continued to find them in random shops around Alberta and BC! We have no idea what makes an idea something super legit. Was it in the creation of it? The printing of it?
