I don’t usually like to over share on social media however I think it’s Important to explain why I’ve been so absent lately. Last fall when Rio was sick I was lifting him and carrying him up the stairs out of our basement apartment. Carrying him to use the bathroom, to every doctors appointment and helping him in and out of the van. In doing so I re-opened a tear in my L4/L5 disc, creating a large disc herniation that lands on my S1 nerve. It has been constant pain for the past two months, struggling to put shoes on, drive or sleep for longer than four hours at a time. Lack of sleep, losing Rio, having to spend so much time at home where I feel his absence, not having yoga or climbing (where I center myself, giving me stability and a clear head) Being immobile, I have been going through serious depression and mood swings. Definitely haven’t been feeling creative. Last week I forced myself to push past that - and I’m so glad I did. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. I have a long awaited steroid injection next week, fingers crossed it works and I’ll be able to start feeling like my normal self. That being said, SO sooo thankful for the unwavering support from close friends, family and especially for @tenimon for being the most patient and kind partner. ✨ Again, hope to see you Monday night - super proud of this line up. My Art, this has long been a form of resistance. From the silver coins my ancestors would melt down to make jewellery (to the point the U.S. government had to remove silver coinage & replace them with paper forms of 10 & 5 cent denominations) but also we believe the pieces made act as a form of protection & was often made with that intention. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽 Speaking of making me a happy indigenous, I would love to extend the love (& protection) of my one-of-a-kind hand made pieces of art. Each piece is a small representation of me as an artist. All of the pieces include hand-cut metals, and I in-person select ever piece of turquoise that goes into my art. They are melted & joined, shaped & shaved. ⚒ Each piece Ive done is an exchange of energy. One of the consequences of the colonization of the Philippines is that the Spanish assigned new Christian surnames to the indigenous people they encountered (Cruz = cross). In fact, it was not uncommon for siblings in the same family to be assigned different last names. The long-term effect of this practice is that many Filipinos, including myself, have been unable to trace the specific indigenous groups our families come from. . There was this one visit I had with my dad when I was home on winter break from college. I had been experiencing a lot of grief around not having been raised with my Filipino culture or language. . I finally worked up the courage to ask my dad why he hadnt raised me with more culturally Filipino. To my surprise, he straight up said it was because he wanted me & my siblings to have the best chance to succeed. I understood this to mean that he believed being a westerner, NOT Filipino, would be my best chance for success. . This hit me like a punch in the gut. All my life, I thought my dads distance in my life was because he didnt love me, but keeping himself from me & his culture, MY culture, was an act of love, not indifference. It was a profound realization to me, & something I still dont feel able to express fully. . Later, when I would educate myself about the colonization of the Philippines & the indigenous resistance that took place, I asked my dad if he knew what region of the Philippines our family came from. He looked at me blankly; he didnt know… he never thought to ask his parents, who were now, no longer living. . I dont know where I come from & that was part of the plan. Separating people from their roots & traditions is a colonial strategy. Killing & displacing people, changing names, shifting values, rewriting history, & making us forget who we are; making us feel like we have no claim to our own identities... Birthday Hoops Oh, hey, hi... I guess I kinda went silent there for a minute. 😂 I’ve been busy burning the candle at both ends for literally all of 2020 (and beyond) and I think it finally caught up to me. I worked finishing the last batch of customs until 3am the night before I was planning on taking a week off from the bench (not from my phone tho), and THEN had to hurricane prep, and THEN pack the truck and drive to ATX on 3hrs of sleep, and well, I thought I was taking time off from the bench and turns out, I’m burnt out as hell and needed a break from emails and messaging and posting too. With house fires and pandemics and multiple fundraisers a month while doing mutual aid and protesting in person and being the person in charge of keeping my house afloat and running a solo operated full time business and still trying to be present for my animals, friends, family, and self, well, MAMA TIRED. Honestly this last week of doing the most to celebrate one of my oldest and dearest friends was probably not long enough of a reset, but here we are, I’m back. All of my bedroom and studio are still elevated for potential flooding, and I think I’ll leave it that way through tropical storm Beta’s passing, so I’ll be spending the next couple days catching up on emails and getting ready to announce the LAST CUSTOMS LIST of 2020. I’ll be opening it up mid to end of week so don’t sleep because spots fill up insanely fast, and I will not be doing as many pieces as last time in hopes to keep the work load manageable and still be able to release a collection of pieces I choose to create before the holidays/this insane year comes to a close. Happy birthday to Mary McCartney, whose stained glass portrait was the first collaboration between myself and Marys mum, Linda, in 1995. We made about 50 works in total, but being the first, and being of Mary, makes this one irresistibly special for me. I’ve always been attracted to jewellery, particularly Pharonic, Egyptian works, and I think this panel reflects that fascination: the surrounding band of blue circles are glass hemispheres, and the light plays through them in a way that one usually only sees in sapphires. The Northwoods Look, I really try not to choose favorites. I also know somehow many pieces get dubbed my favorites (for all genuine and different reasons)... but come on with these 😭😍! This round of customs I was asked to make a set of Northwoods inspired hoops to match my previous (favorite) pendant from earlier in the year. And not only hoops, but a matching tag for their pup. Again, COME ON! These hoops, fabricated in sterling silver, showcase two beautiful layered pieces of deep forest green Moss Agate, with windows cut through the back to allow light to shine through. On either side, handmade fine silver cedar branches that I collected hiking on the North shore of Lake Superior last winter, only made so much more magical by being finished off with three cascading birch bark dangles, that give the hoops so much life. 🌿 The matching dog tag contains more cedar springs, along with a piece of glowing red Lake Superior agate, a sterling pyramid stud, with stamping designs to match the original pendant necklace. I am really excited about how these pieces turned out. I have wanted to silversmith for years, maybe even before I began electroforming and working with copper. I know a lot of you are not super familiar with the process I use and often times people think that my process is the same as the standard jewelry artist or metalsmith; but it is FAR different. I know in order to be a decent metalsmith I need saw skills. I have none, but every journey begins with a single step. Covid has basically eliminated markets for me which has given me a little less urgency to create to sell & allowed me to create for me. These pieces are hand sawed from copper sheet metal and then Electroformed in copper to form their bezel. I am super proud of the fact that I was able to use my saw to create the flat back, I’m taking baby steps towards the direction I want to move. If we aren’t pushing forward we are standing still; so While it’s a small victory , these are super important pieces to me❤️ . . . Tell me what you think of this new style! . . .
