Esta foto me la mandó mi mamá anoche. Como se quedó sin señal de cable, encendió nuestra vieja tele Tatung Dynamic, que lleva años guardada, y descubrió que aún funciona. Esa era la tele cuando niño: en blanco y negro y con un solo canal, porque a Valdivia por muchos años solo llegaba TVN. En esa Tatung Dynamic vi el mundial del 86, los partidos de la “Roja” (aunque el rojo había que imaginarlo), festivales de Viña, alguna OTI cuando era un gran evento, y la Torre 10 cuando se grabó en Valdivia y mi papá tuvo una breve aparición. Verme ahí es juntar dos épocas tan distantes, entre el niño que desde el sur tenía una pequeña ventana al mundo en esa pantalla, y el adulto que hoy -tanto tiempo después- aparece en ella. - @daniel_m_t on Instagram

Late Visitors to Pompeii, Carel Willink, c. 1931. The Dutch artist, Carel Willink (1900- 1983) painted worlds that look familiar, but dont actually exist. In Late Visitors to Pompeii, the artist is shown standing with three other men. They are in a ruined landscape littered with broken fragments of ancient temples, while in the distance a plume of smoke rises from the Vesuvius. The artist once described his own work as imaginary realism, by which he meant that contrary elements, although borrowed from reality, are merged as in a dream. Confieso que tuve miedo al verlo por primera vez. Me colocó en la posición de tener que decidir quién era yo dentro del zoológico: ¿El carnero?, que con miedo te dice vete de aquí cuanto antes, ¿el tigre y la cebra? que no pueden correr por la pradera porque así se lo ordenaron, ¿los flamencos? que esconden la cabeza para no ver, o ¿la oveja? que habla con las nubes porque no tiene con quien más hablar. Entré dentro de su metáfora visual rápidamente. Sentí que estaba jugando con mi cabeza, manipulándome. Sentí la desesperación del niño. ¡Ayuda! ¡Ayuda!. Sentí la de Camila. Su desesperación era mía. Back then, I’d pack his lunch with carrots and fruit roll-ups and a peanut butter and jelly sandwich in a brown paper bag with a new drawing for him everyday.. a zany portrait of him.. or an elaborate old smiley faced man. I’d stand below the window and watch him.. getting settled on the bus, finding his seat and going off to school.. there was just something melancholy about the way that he would leave every morning.. our separation through the glass, him passing with the reflections of the neighborhood houses and trees.. the other kids on the bus being irreverent and doing all the things that school kids do. We did this for years. Those days.. so mundane when they were happening.. are irretrievable. Appreciate every moment!
