Concept and process for Work in Progress Show and RCA2020 with @philipveech & @jurema.xyz Our primary aim was to capture the diversity, creativity and hybridity of the RCA’s community in 2020 through cross-college student workshops to allow for inclusivity in the designs. We held workshops where students could draw “2”s and “0”s generating an extensive archive of student submissions. These glyphs were created using a set of predetermined stencils containing a series of modular shapes. However the unprecedented circumstances of a global pandemic led to the abrupt ending of these cross-college workshops. Forcing us to rethink, question and adapt the concept for a purely digital environment. Artists: Lawrence Abu Hamdan, Elom 20ce & Musquiqui Chihying & Gregor Kasper, Hao Jingban, Christine Sun Kim and Thomas Mader, Nguyen Trinh Thi, Yuichiro Tamura, Yau Ching Curated by Ariane Beyn The exhibition explores how artists engage us in new readings of our complex present by making use of the virtual potentials of archives. While the traditional institution of the archive with its sense of permanence and timeless solidity, its physical location and architecture continues to exist, in today’s world of digitized information, archives are becoming radically temporalized, multimodal, and detached from any specific space in line with a dynamic user culture. Any materials retrieved from these heterogeneous archives can be reused, recontextualized, or restaged, with the possibility of reconfiguring them in any conceivable arrangement. Artists today, more than ever before, are working with archive documents, research, information, and data, processing their material in innovative ways and opening it up to our collective memory for retrieval and reinterpretation. For the first time, our exhibition will be part of the Berlin Art Week (September 9–13, 2020). Friends & Family of The 8x10, Wow things got really crazy real quickly, didn’t they? You know what this is about, so I will try to keep this short. The government is currently ordering our shutdown for at least 8 weeks. At this point, we have had to cancel 27 shows so far. This is an unmanageable situation. The 8x10’s rent alone, for two months is $20,000. There may be relief down the line for The 8x10, but insurance has already told us this event is not covered, so we are going to have to fight to get anything at all. Our main concern right now is our employees. We have set up this fundraiser to contribute to their financial needs while we are closed. We are asking for your help. We have created a VENMO account for donations. We chose VENMO due to the fact that if you link your account to a debit card, there is no fee to make a donation. If you decide to link to a credit card the fee is only 3%. VENMO is the platform that will get the most possible percentage of your money to the cause. If everyone who loves The 8x10 can contribute just a little, many hands make light work and we can hopefully keep our staff out of financial trouble by accepting modest donations from many people.
