I first saw Dobie as one of the “inner circle” at the Rom skate park in Romford Essex @romskatepark not too far from where I grew up as a young teenager. I think if you had told me a year or two ago that I’d feel the way I do right now, about life, about skateboarding and about myself in general, I wouldnt have believed you for one second. Things have been far from ‘perfect’ (whatever that is meant to mean) for the last few years. I’d lost my identity, made some big mistakes and plastered over the cracks with all the wrong fillers. It’s taken me a little while to find an authentic version of myself again and to admit that my identity is intrinsically linked to the four-wheeled-plank and many of the things that revolve around that. Like a lot of you that suffer from various forms of depression and anxiety, I hid away because I felt like a burden and I didn’t trust myself to not accidentally push people away further. I have pushed some people away and I’m making some amends to those folks as I am able. I’m also glad I am able to speak about this stuff because, as has been proved to me recently, there are very many of you feeling very similar things. I think helping people to feel like they are not alone in their struggle is just the beginning of the conversation we are now having. I’m glad I stuck around to see this version of myself and I hope that that is in some way inspiring to anyone who is finding it difficult to believe things can get better. They can; I absolutely promise you. It might not be easy or quick, but it is possible. I’ve had help from lots of my old friends, and support, reassurance and advice from many new ones. One person, above all others has gotten me to this place. @phil.hill.talks was patient with me and was able to use their own struggle to help me with mine, the way I hope I can help others. Thank you Phil, without you, I don’t believe I’d be here to tell this part of the story 😘 I still don’t have consistently good days and I feel like I fail regularly but I do now know that this smile is possible and authentic and that being authentic is the best anyone can ever hope or dream for in this life. Here is the cover for my new album, Notes from the Underground, coming out this autumn. I began designing this during lockdown and most of the album was written then too. It started when I randomly spent a whole weekend drawing made up pixel icons instead of ya know being able to go out djing and these can be seen in the background of the cover. I wanted it to have a hand made feel and reflect my chaotic mind, in keeping with working in isolation. It’s taking inspiration from the Windows 95 desktop look, so I named one of the tracks Windows 95 too. And as a nice coincidence this is the 25th anniversary year of Windows 95 coming out. 95 was the year I first heard jungle and part of the concept for the album was trying to imagine what I would have made if I was a producer back then. I tried using gear from the time like the Akai S950 sampler but didn’t want to be totally beholden to the past so used the best of both worlds of tech, modern and retro. Progress on the clothes an neck. Getting there. I will work my way up to the face and get this all done in the next days. The important thing to remember when going for this type of work is that each element is equally important and unique. Each facial feature, a nose, an eyelid, lips, just about everything becomes an entire “creature” of its own, with primary, secondary and tertiary forms, if you absolutely need to use those terms. But in a way, this separation should not exist, because at the end of the day, a face is a fractal and every time you get a little closer, secondary forms become primary when seen in isolation, then the tertiary become primary and so on, to infinity. All forms are equally important and inter-dependent. The separation between those forms only exist if you are not looking close enough. Think about “form hierarchy”, instead of primary, secondary and tertiary. It’s a better and more precise term, in my opinion. Everything hand carved in ZBrush and rendered in Maya/Arnold. Thank you so much for casting your votes on your favorite lighting in my last post! Between IG and Facebook, the amount of replies was overwhelming. Although I didn’t actually count the votes, by reading through the never ending lists, my unofficial impression is that renders A, B, L and P where the great winners! I then took render A, did a few tweaks on the lighting and a TON of tweaks on the model and rendered it in 4k square, 14 samples and my Threadripper 3970x STILL took 7+ hours to render, because the more you have, the more you crank the settings until it’s back to slug mode... 😒 GPU render would be the way to go, but that will have to wait. A single 24GB card would not cut it for me. My scenes are about 30GB+. but we will see if I can score one in the future, so for now, CPU it is. I will do a last pass on details and call it done over the weekend, when I should post final renders of many angles, so stay tuned. All textures hand painted (polypainted in ZBrush, HD mode). The field shrinks. Imposed regimes gradually giving way to something new, images slowly rising. A situation that can’t be simply understood, only responded to. Weeks fold into days and months, forming clumpy, uneven shapes behind you. Despite your hat telling you that you look fine, today your eyes tell you something else. That push and pull of not knowing enough whilst knowing too much seems crushing and immovable. As the restrictions ease we get a glimpse of the new world that awaits and it appears to be a very long, well-spaced queue for Primark. The strange cloud remains that you couldn’t be there were anything to happen to your loved ones bc you’re countries apart. Your last remaining grandparent is 94 and you try and reconcile with the fact you’ll never be in a room with them again. Are these realisations deaths in themselves? When every episode that makes up the future as we understand it is removed, we fall into a new kind of formlessness. A formlessness that shakes you day after day. We know there is something peaceful about emptiness, but it takes a force of mind and general agility to adjust to that with any meaningful strength. It’s not an agility that comes easy to most. For all that I am OK - a lucky one - and I don’t crave answers yet. If answers come now they’ll be built on other people’s agendas, old agendas. Agendas which have been hurled out continuously from every angle, every day of this time. It has given legitimacy and belief to native tech industry and it has enabled people to learn what it takes to create a category king, not to mention attracting business capital and educational institutions. In our recent webinar chat, Malcolm discussed the broad impact that Atlassian has had on the tech sector and mentioned that it was somehow fitting that the founders purchased the two most expensive properties in Australia from the Fairfax family (who owned the once massive media conglomerate). In its own way, this was the passing of the torch from the legacy Media dynasty to the new age Technology dynasty after nearly 100 years. So, what was Malcolm’s advice to entrepreneurs looking to make their mark in a topsy-turvy world and become the next Atlassian? His main theme was simply this: With change there is always opportunity. Seize on the impacts of COVID and find ways to solve real world problems through technology. Figure out what you are passionate about and pursue it as hard as you can. Have confidence that you are equal on the world stage and use Zoom and similar technology to capitalize on the “death of distance.” And he implored young startups to Be imaginable. Interestingly, he said he thinks there is an abundance of technology out there today, but there is “a shortage of technological imagination.” Adding, “So many businesses fail because they won’t cannibalize their legacy business. In the Urwerk UR-220, the Oil Change indicator takes the shape of a numerical counter calibrated in months, shown on two adjacent rollers. The log of the movement’s running time is started by the owner of the watch who removes a security pin and presses the pusher on the back of the UR-220. From then on, the counter displays the accumulated running time of the watch in months. When it reaches 39 months, it is time to take the watch in for a service and oil change.
