For those criticizing protestors: If you haven’t read up on the unprovoked and outrageous violence perpetrated by police against protestors and bystanders please take a moment to do so now. Slate covers it well but feel free to run your own google search and check the accounts of people who were there. . I don’t want to see any criticism of “looters” or “inciting chaos” and I sure as hell don’t want to hear about any “thugs” (great word to dehumanize the people you apply it to) unless you are talking about the egregious violence, looting, chaos inducing behaviour of the police/national guard. . After a Kentucky grand jury ruled not to charge two of the three police officers involved in the killing of Breonna Taylor, protesters across the country took to the streets, including at the Texas Capitol and Austin City Hall Wednesday evening to stand against the decision. Protesters gathered in Florissant and downtown St. Louis on Wednesday to protest that no charges were filed directly related to the death of Breonna Taylor, a Black woman killed in Louisville, Kentucky, earlier this year during a police raid. ⠀ ⠀ Police in St. Louis said protesters started a fire in front of police headquarters on Olive Street and tossed water bottles and fluids at officers. Police in Florissant said someone in the protest group there tossed fireworks as police were arresting six people for peace disturbance. ⠀ ⠀ No injuries were reported in St. Louis or Florissant.⠀ ⠀ The protests centered around a grand jury decision in Louisville. On Wednesday, Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron announced that the grand jury decided to charge one officer with wanton endangerment in connection with the raid. No officers were charged directly in Taylor’s death, setting off protests in Louisville and other cities.⠀ ⠀ Locally, about 50 demonstrators gathered in Florissant. Florissant police said the demonstrators walked onto Lindbergh Boulevard and blocked the road. Police ordered them to clear the road and six people were arrested on suspicion of peace disturbance. I’ve been out documenting the peaceful protests and looting/riots. I want to show the truth and disparity amongst what’s really happening out there for those that are not able to experience it for themselves. freedom_square.jpg . In July of 2016, Freedom Square was taken back by the group now known @letusbreathe773 LetUsBreathe Collective. For 41 days, they occupied the lot across the street from Homan Square, a secret police “black site.” A 2015 report by The Guardian found that at least 7,0000 people were disappeared to the off-the-books interrogation compound, and many were physically and mentally tortured into giving false confessions. On Friday, July 24, thousands of us gathered to enrich our abolitionist roots, to demand the defunding of CPD, to demand the dismantling of the torture center known as Homan Square, to fight for indigenous sovereignty, and to continue to labor for true liberation. Throughout the rally, it was echoed that “safety” is an illusion created to allow for racist systems to continue to violently oppress marginalized people. The greatest resource we have are our communities and each other. Community action has been tantamount to the survival of our most oppressed groups, not perceived the “safety” offered by violent systems and violent workers. This was one of the most inspiring and emotionally overwhelming events I’ve been able to attend. We danced, we sang, we laughed, we marched the streets of North Lawndale, we embraced each other with love and respect, and we enjoyed the support of our neighbors. All of this in the looming presence of hundreds of CPD officers armed to the teeth with riot gear. Maar we vinden het Zeer asociaal hoe een groepje mensen zich gedragen hebben deze avond. Dan gaat het om een groepje mensen die de hele avond herrie hebben lopen maken. Wat gaat er in jullie kop rond? Is je auto een attractie en wil je op de kermis werken? Ben je gekomen om te zorgen dat er weer een locatie naar de klote gaat? Heb je geen aanspraak en denk je zo vrienden te krijgen? Is het ter compensatie van iets anders? Wat is er in godsnaam met jullie aan de hand? Wij van B-Style Tuning zijn niet op alle plekken om mensen te kunnen aanspreken en willen ook eigenlijk geen politie agentje spelen. Maar dit gaat werkelijk nergens over. We kregen zelfs klachten van mensen die naar het ziekenhuis zijn gegaan omdat ze klachten van het gehoor hadden. Ook zijn de mensen die zich op de boten bevinden uitgescholden die vroegen of het niet anders kon. We gaan nu dus ook zeker opletten wie het zijn en zullen de kentekens noteren. Wat we met die kentekens gaan doen zal geen verassing zijn. We vragen ook aan mensen die naar meetings komen om mensen er op aan te spreken dit soort asociaal gedrag niet te vertonen op meetings. Als mensen dit zo blijven doen zijn er straks geen plekken meer waar je bij elkaar kunt komen met je auto, begrijp dat nou eens. Er worden elk weekend meetings verboden omdat mensen zich niet aan de regels houden, herrie maken, troep achterlaten en racen. Laat dit aub de laatste keer zijn dat we dit moeten zeggen: Hou op met herrie maken op meetings. Geen lawaaioverlast, geen pops en bangs en geen gerace tussen publiek door!!! They are facing multiple felony charges and years in prison in an obvious frame-up aimed at stopping the movement for justice for Elijah McClain. I’ve seen a lot of hate directed towards protestors saying that everyone there is looting and that they are fools for putting themselves at risk of getting injured by the police. Video taken by @sethbeckton (Seth and I were a foot from each other both recording the protests and out of nowhere an undirected rubber bullet came right in between us. Imagine going blind from a rubber bullet for peacefully documenting history?) I can say for myself specifically for Denver, that this is not the case. Although there was some vandalism from select individuals, 99.9 percent of the people there were peacefully protesting. At a place that is meant for protesting (The capital) I witnessed some extreme behavior from the Denver Police Department, who were consistently using excessive force against everyone over the first 6 or so days of the protests. Eventually the curfew was lifted and the police backed off, instantly the energy changed down there and it was 100 percent peaceful, with no police presence. The protests themselves needed to happen but the system didn’t want it to. The people showed up and made their voices heard. The Revolution will be messy. It will be led by those of us who have always had the answer. If BIPOC trans queer folk aren’t at the forefront of your movement then it is simply a moment. In Baltimore and Chicago we are on the ground constantly doing the work. Pushing through our own generational trauma. Our Cities has been attacked by the mainstream media because of the violence we experience in our communities, when in reality the media is carrying on a century-long narrative of demonizing and criminalizing Blxck and Brown people. However to actively address violence we have to look at the root causes such as trauma, manufactured poverty and red lining to name a few. We begin to change and heal our community by addressing trauma and creating trauma informed spaces especially for youth. I have been on a journey of healing from trauma in my own space. I do this work to heal. To help others to shift from hopelessness to healing with the understanding that it is not linear. Understanding that trauma is a battle we are unfortunately born with, as we face factors that drive cycles of violence and perpetuate intergenerational trauma. Trauma that is destructive both to our spirits and our communities. Trauma that impairs our capacity to build, to dream, to hope, to heal and to live. But here we stand, Ready and Willing to create that change. No one is coming to save us. WE ARE THE REVOLUTION.
