Over the Labor Day weekend, the greater Sacramento area experienced an array of activism, including demonstrations from supporters of Black Lives Matter Sacramento and counter-protesters. Activists expressed the need to end racial injustice, while the opposition protested otherwise, as both attempted to find common ground. After a Kentucky grand jury ruled not to charge two of the three police officers involved in the killing of Breonna Taylor, protesters across the country took to the streets, including at the Texas Capitol and Austin City Hall Wednesday evening to stand against the decision. Shortly after the protest began, a group of protesters attacked Hiram Garcia, an online streamer who often films protests. freedom_square.jpg . In July of 2016, Freedom Square was taken back by the group now known @letusbreathe773 LetUsBreathe Collective. For 41 days, they occupied the lot across the street from Homan Square, a secret police “black site.” A 2015 report by The Guardian found that at least 7,0000 people were disappeared to the off-the-books interrogation compound, and many were physically and mentally tortured into giving false confessions. On Friday, July 24, thousands of us gathered to enrich our abolitionist roots, to demand the defunding of CPD, to demand the dismantling of the torture center known as Homan Square, to fight for indigenous sovereignty, and to continue to labor for true liberation. Throughout the rally, it was echoed that “safety” is an illusion created to allow for racist systems to continue to violently oppress marginalized people. The greatest resource we have are our communities and each other. Community action has been tantamount to the survival of our most oppressed groups, not perceived the “safety” offered by violent systems and violent workers. This was one of the most inspiring and emotionally overwhelming events I’ve been able to attend. We danced, we sang, we laughed, we marched the streets of North Lawndale, we embraced each other with love and respect, and we enjoyed the support of our neighbors. All of this in the looming presence of hundreds of CPD officers armed to the teeth with riot gear. Black Lives Matter: I’ve thought long and hard about what to say in regards to everything that has transpired. I will never fully understand the plight of the African-American community, it is not my story and so I cannot speak for them. That though does not mean that I won’t stand in solidarity with my black brothers and sisters to stand for justice. I won’t lie, part of me was fearful of things escalating and a peaceful protest turning violent considering how volatile things have been lately, but what actually transpired on Saturday was beautiful. The mix of people from all parts of the spectrum, ages, and backgrounds coming together to support their fellow humans on their path to finding a righteous solution to injustices. Tense moments being quelled by the leaders of the march, not buying into the violence. The pain, yet more LOVE. It was an incredibly heartwarming experience. I felt like it was my duty as a human being, and as an artist, to document this moment in time, for our own records and that of future generations. Love more, hate less. Keep the peace and an open heart, that’s the path to change. Stand together, and we can achieve just that. Thank you to everyone who has been demanding justice for our Black and Brown communities and jamming with us in the streets. We are honored to be a part of the struggle. Despite our grassroots demands to defund and ultimately abolish the police, the NYPD budget got moved around at best, and was not actually defunded. I’ve held off on posting these photos because I didn’t believe I was right to be posting my experience at the #blm protest, but I wanted to share a few things I saw real people have wrote on signs and gone out to share. You may not be seeing as many story reposts or trending hashtags even a few weeks after recent events, but #blacklivesmatter isn’t going away. People are still fighting every day despite if it’s still ‘trendy’ or not, we have to do that. Racism isn’t a trend and it isn’t politics, so don’t stay away because you aren’t ‘political’. Being just ‘not racist’ is no longer enough. We have to keep fighting here in the UK against a racist government and around the world. Advocates and family members hold a vigil in honor of Victor Ray Cruz, an inmate at the Metropolitan Correctional Center who died of coronavirus. In a new story, @maya.gauri lays out how lax procedures and failure to properly quarantine inmates has helped fuel the massive, deadly spread of COVID-19 within the Metropolitan Correctional Center downtown. One key decision that appears to have facilitated the spread of the virus within the facility happened when a local hospital recommended that instead of bringing an inmate in for a procedure, medical professionals do it at the jail with phone support from the hospital. The inmate was brought to the hospital regardless, and wasn’t quarantined upon his return. Soon, he and the inmates around him tested positive for the virus. Inmates, their family members and attorneys also expressed concerns about failure to truly quarantine sick or exposed inmates, and access to medical care once someone has tested positive. The facility also began accepting new intakes earlier this month, broadening the potential for exposure. A Bureau of Prisons spokesman said the facility follows proper quarantine procedures and provides appropriate care. RALLY TO DEMAND DIVESTMENT FROM CGL AND TECK❗️ The RCMP is currently raiding and arresting peaceful Wet’suwet’en land defenders who are protecting their lands from the construction of the Coastal GasLink Pipeline, a natural gas project set to be built through unceded Indigenous territory. The pipeline and the RCMP’s involvement violates the rights of the Wetsuweten nation and is yet another effort by the Canadian government to colonize Indigenous peoples and their lands. This month, the Canadian government is also set to make a decision regarding the Teck Frontier Mine. The oil extracted from Teck would be transported by the Trans Mountain pipeline, affecting Secwepemc, Squamish, Tsleil-Waututh, Coldwater, and Ts’elxweyeqw communities, among many others. It is morally unacceptable for our leaders to move forward with such projects, which are responsible for destroying Indigenous land, bringing violence to Indigenous peoples, and causing the state of climate emergency we are in. Meanwhile, our university continues to fund and encourage the fossil fuel industry. In December 2019, McGill rejected fossil fuel divestment. As of 2019, McGill invests $6 million in TC Energy, the company behind Coastal GasLink. The McGill community does not accept the Universitys continued support of the fossil fuel industry. Ive always had a disdain for instagram. It is a necessity in my line of work, almost like your own mini PR company if utilised properly. But the past few years Instagram has been attracting more and more tone deafness. It has felt acutely more arrogant. Hence why Ive shied away from it. How can you project your picture perfect life when you know how many are suffering and striving to live equally across the planet? But over the last few days my opinion has changed. Ive seen how powerful a tool it can be when used as a tool of protest. The outpouring from everyone has been so moving, this time something does feel different. I hope that is true. If this is the modern way to protest and in these challenging COVID times; we can all protest safely, away from police presence and law breaking. Over the last few days, I have struggled with words to address the tragedies, inequality and violence that have affected our community in New York City. The senseless murder of George Floyd have left us all with anger, confusion, resentment, sadness and loss. Yesterday, I had the opportunity to march with peaceful demonstrators in New York, a city that I love so much. There were people from all walks of life, young, old, black and white standing together in solidarity against black racial injustices. I could feel the hurt and anger in the masses because America has fallen short on its promise to insure freedom and equality for all since its Declaration of Independence. As a father, I was touched by the young people who felt that their future is compromised. We have fallen short as a mindful nation and the well being of future generations have been impacted. This is heartbreaking. Our leadership is at its best mediocre. There is clearly a pattern of cruelty suffered by black Americans and denied by others for generations and we cannot continue as a conscious nation without addressing the underlying issues that have destroyed our sense of unity, love, peace and kindness. The double standards in this country need to be acknowledged. As a Father foremost and Founder of Rawspace, a company solely based on bringing community experiences into our spaces, we will adhere to the highest standards of ethics related to equality, diversity and inclusion. You have our commitment on this.
