I haven’t shared much about my pregnancy here, since I believe it is such a deeply personal journey. I will say this, though (and much more soon, as I feel strongly about the adverse conditions especially Black birthing folx are facing in this country): While this year has brought so many painful realities to the surface, the last 31 weeks, for me, have been the most wondrous to experience 💫 Thanks to my incredible team, friends and family, I feel supported in the decisions I’ve made for our birth. To help ease the anxiety for mother’s around pregnancy 🤰🏽, birth 👶🏽 and COVID-19 let me introduce to you a very special person. _ Meet my best friend and sister, Dr. Nishita Patel 👩🏽⚕️ who is currently a PGY-1 OB/GYN resident at Georgetown University. Together we have come up with the 3 most important points. We will be posting one point each day for the next 3 days and would love to hear any feedback or questions you may have! _ 🔑Key Point number 1: In pregnancy your immune system is suppressed! Your risk of COVID as well as getting other common viruses including the flu is higher! Make sure to talk to your OB/Gyn and get your flu vaccine if you haven’t already! _ Current reports show that pregnant women do not have more severe symptoms than the general public. So take the same precautions as those around you. Wear a mask when you are out and about! Wash your hands (see previous post for more details)! And practice good social distancing! _ We know it’s scary, but it’s going to be okay! Lilac Fairy Tiny Apartment Variation — I had so much fun during my lesson with @zimmi9 this morning! I always feel so grateful each time I get to learn a new variation because they’re something that I really wasn’t able to break down until this year. It takes me hours to write out each variation, but once I have it on paper, I pick it up rather quickly. Being able to go into a lesson already knowing the steps means that I can spend that time learning the nuisances of the piece rather than just learning what comes next. That valuable time with my teacher can be spent on artistry, which is really what makes each variation unique. Most people can learn the steps. It’s not about just doing the steps though. It’s about bringing a character to life through movement. Dancers are performance artists. Technique matters, but one of most important functions of technique is to provide a solid foundation upon which to apply artistic elements. Technique is important and valuable, but artistry is what pulls us into each character’s story. Training your glutes while pregnant can actually help stabilize and support the back muscles AND pelvic floor 🙌🏼 . 1️⃣ Low Squatting Band Abductions This move has replaced the regular/parallel squatting abductions I do when not pregnant. Being this low actually takes the pressure off my pelvic floor and doesn’t cause ANY pelvic pain 🙌🏼! I felt my upper glute max firing 🔥which was SO NICE because it’s been extremely challenging for me to connect with this muscle due to normal pregnancy pelvic discomfort 2️⃣ Rear Leaning Squatting Abductions Another variation I played around with that I also LOVED! Again, I can connect nicely with my upper glute max without having any pelvic discomfort 🤘🏼 3️⃣ Band Lateral x Reverse Steps 1 refers to these as “cha-chas” but I can’t lower my torso down as far because of this big belly 😉 so here is my comfortable pregnant variation 4️⃣ Dumbbell Static Lunges Very glute focused. Watch how my front toes are lifted to mentally and physically force my glute to take over much of the lifting and lowering 🥵. The dumbbell on my shoulder totally kicked it up a notch 5️⃣ Single Leg Sit Squats VERY challenging this far along 🤰🏼 but I still feel my form is acceptable AND it felt great! Control your body all the way down to the step and as you come up to standing. 🖤 I’m not one for social trends, but I can definitely stand behind women’s empowerment and I invite any and all women to share and uplift each other in this sisterhood of power. ✨ Here I am, two days after my daughter’s birth... swollen, in pain, organs out of place, icepacks all up in my diaper, completely cried out as I clench onto a bottle of formula, feeling defeated. “I’m failing her...” I bawled to @maikadias, prepping this bottle after hours upon hours of her latching onto me, then pulling off out of frustration when nothing would come out. Hours of me fighting the justification to give it to her. She had just made the exhausting journey from the womb into my arms and I couldn’t even feed her the very thing she worked so hard for. The colostrum I knew she needed most. She was so tired and so hungry. We all were. The second the bottle touched her lips, she drank like she had been dying of thirst. Her eyes crossed as though it was the most euphoric drug, grunting and catching her breath between desperate gulps, before immediately passing out from satisfaction. I completely lost it because it wasn’t ME who gave her that. Tears fell all over Kani as I cried to Maika, clenching her and swaying back and forth “I can’t feed my baby”. I cried so hard I couldn’t breathe. “I can’t nourish my poor baby.” I cried myself to sleep. Maikalani comforted me as best he could, but it was only the grace of the WOMEN that opened me up to being more gentle with myself. “But you DID feed your baby.” “She was hungry. You fed her, and now she’s happy. Boom.” “When you graduate, it doesn’t say on your diploma whether you were breast-fed or bottle-fed.” “You are NOT failing your baby. You are her entire world.” There are some things only a woman can help you navigate. There are more things only a mother can help you navigate, and a mother’s love is the ultimate antidote. Especially when healing is needed. And healing is needed now more than ever in this world. I appreciate all who extended the invitation to participate in this.
