Happy National Book Lovers Day! ❤️ . . @readersforequality is challenging everyone to share a book they loved before Bookstagram. I couldn’t pick just one, so here’s my stack of favorites from my childhood to early adulthood. . . The lack of diversity in my pile is jarring to me. Growing up, the books I read were either recommended to me by family, friends, and school teachers or what caught my eye at Target and Barnes N Noble. It never occurred to me then to reflect on the types of authors and books I gravitated towards. I remember a shift in awareness begin to happen once I started taking English Lit courses in college, where the required reading included authors I had never heard of before. While I’m thankful that college opened my eyes to books beyond white (cis) male and female authors, I can’t help but think that this should have happened earlier. Not everyone has the privilege to go to college. Why aren’t we exposed to more inclusive books and readings in grades K-12? . . Black Lives Matter. Kenosha, Minneapolis, Louisville, and so many others and places are in our thoughts. A few months ago, we released “Lemonade,” a piece designed with PEACE in mind. Think Beverly Hills Hotel.” We even used the font from that hotel, designed by Black architect Paul WIlliams, in the 1940s. We reversed “MILKWEED” on the label because we, as a country, need to re-engineer our thought processes and systems when it comes to racism. We pledged $1 per piece sold to selected charities and movements, starting with Black Lives Matter” @blklivesmatter. Seeing as very little has changed since the release of the this piece, we are doubling our donation. Fucking apostrophes! 🤬 Does anyone else ever get that feeling? When youre trying to write something and the green and red wiggly lines keep telling you you havent got it quite right but for the life of you, you cant think what you need to change to make it work? I think the moment I realised, that my superpower could be dyslexia, was when I ditched the need of countless Q cards and rehearing speeches none stop - I just couldn’t retain and read like that. I went out on stage (very vulnerable I will add), with a few pointers, but thanks to my sisters giving me the confidence - I just went for it. I knew my subject and I allowed it to flow. I had the most compliments ever and from that moment, I have known that this is who I am. Thank you dyslexia. Did you know people with dyslexia think faster than non-dyslexics? If you dont have dyslexia you have verbal thoughts 💭, youll think in words which has a linear process at a speed of about 150 words a minute. With me so far? Well, dyslexics have non-vernal thoughts. We think in pictures! 🖼 And as our thoughts grow the picture grows – its so much faster than words which is why we sometimes stumble over our words, the ideas 💡 are flowing too quickly! And thats not all! People with dyslexia tend to have above-average imaginative skills as well as a natural curiosity to discover or understand new things! October is #DyslexiaAwarenessMonth (dont even get me started on how its spelt! Northern Irish writers and Irish language writers are in luck! We are piloting our first-ever course bursary initiative. These bursaries will enable writers to develop their skills through funded places at Irish Writers Centre creative writing courses, and open up access to course entry by subsidising costs to individuals who may not otherwise be able to take a course. We encourage writers from backgrounds typically underrepresented in Irish literature to apply. We particularly invite applications from BIPOC, Traveller, people with disabilities, and working class writers. We will place a strong focus on ethnicity, race, and socioeconomic status when evaluating the applications for bursaries. At this time last year on Yom Kippur, I entered the holiday in a state of haziness and sadness, making a strong vow that I would be compassionate toward myself in the coming year. Today, as I prep for this special day again, I can’t help but think about that vow and how through this crazy and surreal year, both on a global and personal level, I kept my word to myself (for the most part). I’m grateful for that promise I made, for it helped guide me toward stepping into a stronger, kinder, more forgiving version of myself. It confirmed to me, as I let myself feel things intensely without judgement or timelines throughout this past year, that showing kindness to yourself first and foremost is the only way you can show true kindness to those around you. And so this Yom Kippur, while I will ask for genuine forgiveness from those I have caused any ounce of hurt, I will also sincerely ask myself for forgiveness and mean it. This piece that I made for @dailytrumpet is up today. Thank you to Jonathan Horowitz for inviting me to participate in that ongoing project. Early last month the president said something very troubling about Covid-19: that it “will go away like things go away.” I was struck by this & kept turning the phrase over and over in my head. It’s almost impossibly unlikely that the pandemic will go away without real collective effort, but there’s a certain seductive nihilism to thinking that everything will go away (and everything will - on a long enough time scale our sun will explode - but of course that doesn’t mean that whatever happens before then is irrelevant). I’m feeling hopeful about voting for Biden and Harris in November (well, I’ll vote earlier because I live in a vote by mail state and intend on getting that ballot in as soon as I can). Biden wasn’t my candidate in the primaries but I have faith that he’s listening to the needs of the country and is ready to take on the job. Are you registered to vote? When first studying Emily Brontë’s poetry in sixth form I learnt of the imaginary world of Gondal created by her and her sister Anne. The depth and creativity of this world they designed in their minds intrigued and amazed me - a world they continued writing about well into adulthood when most of us have said a fond farewell to our own imaginary friends. Its a mitzvah to build your Sukkah on motzei Yom Kippur, and this Balabusta already got it done. Of course my hubby and sons built it, but thats because we ladies are exempt from time-bound mitzvahs. Ma dernière lecture: la goûteuse d’Hitler de Rosella Postorino. Roman traduit de l’italien. . Je suis assez d’accord avec plusieurs critiques lues, il y a certaines longueurs, mais j’ai conservé un tempo de lecture assez rapide. . Le roman nous amène en Allemagne près de la fin de la guerre, au moment où Hitler avait peur d’être victime d’un empoisonnement; 15 goûteuses furent engagées au service du Reich. Parmi elles, Rosa, personnage principale du roman et inspirée de Margot Wölk, qui fut réellement goûteuse en 1943 sous l’Allemagne nazie. . J’ai totalement accroché sur le personnage de Rosa, ses réflexions m’ont beaucoup touchées. Elle a fait preuve d’une résilience remarquable malgré les circonstances. Quelles étaient les possibilités et les options pour une allemande non-juive et antinazie en plein coeur de la Deuxième Guerre Mondiale? C’est de ces perspcetives qu’il est question dans « la goûteuse d’Hitler». Sujet sans doute très intéressant et très peu traité dans la fiction. Sasha Snax 🍅🥝🍌 My show and tell for the day... creating a dehydrator full of veggies and fruit that will keep Sasha and us very happy (for probably only a few hours as dehydrated goodies tend to be eaten very quickly). Dehydrating is something that I usually feel like I don’t have ‘time’ to do, but today the idea popped up and Xoch and I jumped into it, tunes playing and within half an hour we had a whole load of treats in the dehydrator. The kitchen is one place I can happily spend all day, creating. I like it because you have to always go step by step. You can’t make the stew without chopping the onion and garlic first. And my mind quietens and focuses on what’s in front of me. And then there’s the whole area of the “deep kitchen”. My friend Nick came up with this phrase to describe the world of fermenting, stock making, dehydrating, pickling, preserving and all the techniques that take time to prepare and yield their fruits in the future. The things that don’t give instant gratification but somehow connect me to a deeper relationship between food, nature and myself. I think it’s about the slowing down, the process and the length of time that I am connected to these jars of often strange smelling creations. They morph and change, perhaps as I do too. Who knows? #bookevening ! Za możliwość przeczytania tej pozycji dziękuję wydawnictwu @wydawnictwoznakpl @znak.com.pl . Kiedy dostałam propozycje zrecenzowania książki „Prokurator. Kobieta, która się nie bała” targały mną sprzeczne uczucia. Z jednej strony odczułam ekscytację, bo tematami kryminalnymi interesuje się od dawna, z drugiej zaś obawę, bo zazwyczaj wybieram podcasty, a literatura faktu nie jest czymś, co często recenzuję. Jednak bardzo się cieszę, że książka ta trafiła w moje ręce, bo gdy tylko zaczęłam czytać wszelkie wątpliwości się rozwiały. Utwierdziłam się też w przekonaniu, że jest to pozycja dla mnie. „Prokurator…” opiera się na wywiadzie, którego udzieliła Małgorzata Ronc Joannie Podgórskiej (dziennikarce „Polityki”). Podzielona jest na trzy części, wstęp będący wywiadem, rozwinięcie przybliżające nam sprawy, którymi zajmowała się Pani Prokurator i zakończenie, czyli drugą część wywiadu, który zwieńcza i domyka całą historię. Nie będę ukrywać, że sprawą, która najbardziej przykuła moją uwagę, były morderstwa Mariusza Trynkiewicza. Swoją drogą, czy istnieje w Polsce jakaś osoba, która nie słyszała kiedyś tego nazwiska i nie kojarzy tego jakiej zbrodni się dopuścił? Poza tym niezwykle fascynująca była historia ordynator oddziału dziecięcego posądzonej o łapówkarstwo, czy też Henryka Morusia będącego seryjnym mordercą. Na uwagę i pochwałę zasługuje również fakt prowadzenia narracji z wykorzystaniem przystępnego i zrozumiałego języka. Dabiri details how Black hair has been stigmatised, appropriated and controlled. She celebrates the cultural significance and myriad functions of Black hairstyling; from encoding mathematical systems, to drawing out secret maps and connecting people. Dabiri also reflects on growing up Black and Irish, uncovering the racism that is still prevalent in Ireland. Dabiri is calling attention to the discrimination faced by Black students because of their hair. In the UK, hairstyles necessary for the maintenance of Afro hair have been penalised in schools, excluding students from education. Super cute macarons from @zero.mode These macarons are sooooooooo cuteeeee! 🥺 There were 12 macarons with different assorted flavors! Most macarons I’ve tried are often a little too sweet for my taste but these were perfect! It wasn’t too sweet at all! Took my first bite and fell in love with it! ❤️ The shells were at the perfect consistency that wasn’t too soft or too brittle! The box consist of flavors such as yuzu, black sesame, date, chocolate etc. The 2 that stood out most to me is definitely the Black Sesame and Matcha flavors! Overall 💫 9/10 🖤 Black Sesame (Top right - White macaron) 💫 10/10 MY FAVORITE OF THE BUNCH! 😋 The moment I took a bite, I fell in loveeeee! 💚 Matcha (Monster University) 💫 9/10 Love how the matcha flavor wasn’t too strong! It was at that perfect balance of matcha and sweetness! 🤎 Chocolate (Line Bear) 💫 9.5/10 The chocolate was more on the dark chocolate side but it wasn’t bitter at all! And it wasn’t too sweet as well! LOVE THIS TOO! ❤️ Date (Top-left macaron - Purple with gold dust) 💫 9/10 First time trying a date flavored macarons and I will definitely eat this again! 💛 Yuzu (Pikachu) 💫 10/10 LOVE THIS! First up is @masgrimes’ French Roundhand here in NYC, then to Italy for a week of gilding and more with @toniwattsart, and then back to Cheerio in the fall with @calligraphile for Italic Variations (again!). Sneaking in some sign painting, conferences and of course local workshops with @societyofscribes here in NYC. If only I could make it to Brody’s retreat in Chicago too... I almost cancelled this trip. I was feeling a lot of anxiety about everything that “should” be done, and the fact that my daughter has been acting out a bit lately and I blame myself for being too busy and not spending enough time with her. She even said the words “mama is too busy” while playing on her own yesterday. I got teary as I drove out of the city, feeling immense guilt. But I have wanted to go on a solo-getaway for years, and I was fortunate enough to have a friend whose lovely daughter shared her friends and family discount with me. So I’m here at Lake Louise, somewhere I haven’t been since I was a little kid, and it’s amazing. Yeah, I have to wear a mask in common areas, and most of the restaurants are closed, but I’ve got the best seat in the house, a glass of wine, a comfy bed, and am watching the snow fall in the mountains. Hoy os traigo un #booktag que he visto mucho por las redes: . 📝¿Lugar o sitio específico para leer?: Suelo leer en la cama, especialmente de noche antes de acostarme. 📝¿Marcapáginas o cualquier papel?: Siempre uso marcapáginas pero como soy un poco desastre y tiendo a perderlos alguna vez si estoy fuera de casa he tenido que usar algún ticket de la compra que lleve en el bolso. 📝¿Puedes dejar de leer en cualquier momento o esperas a terminar el capítulo?: Siempre espero a terminar el capítulo, no puedo dejarlo a medias, no entiendo como algunas personas pueden dejar capítulos a medias 😂. 📝¿Comes o bebes mientras lees?: Comer, nunca. Y beber, si es por la tarde pues a veces con un poco de café pero siempre con cuidado de no dejar cerca del libro la taza. 📝¿Un libro o varios a la vez?: Varios, pero porque suelo hacer casi todos los meses alguna LC y aparte siempre tengo alguno en el kindle para cuando voy en transporte publico. De normal leo unos tres libros a la vez. 📝¿Ves TV o escuchas música mientras lees?: La TV nunca, y la música solo cuando voy en transporte publico para tapar el ruido. 📝¿Lees en tu cabeza o en voz alta?: En mi cabeza. I loved how Kailyn was smart, career-driven, and logical but also had a big heart and a fangirl side. I also enjoyed reading about Emme and Kailyn’s relationship, which was very sweet. This was the first book I read by Helena Hunting, and I’d definitely read more of her books. Ive completely changed my mind and its all I can think about 🤯 I have been doing some thinking and have come to the conclusion that I am not 100% happy with my wee brand that I have built! I am a very indecisive person but honestly never thought this would be something Id second guess again (already done it once before). 🤭 I want a fresh look but this doesnt mean Im changing my logo or scrapping everything! The change will be gradual and will take time, but I hope you will end up loving Miss Wax even more! A fresh look for me means new jars, new labels, new scents and a website rebrand! I cant wait to start designing some new stuff for you guys!!
