The male Longhorn bee (Eucera longicornis) is instantly recognisable, owing to its extraordinary long antennae. A much declined species they are now are confined to a few inlands sites and coastal areas. Even rarer still is the associated parasite, the Six-banded nomad bee (Nomada sexfasciata). Our Countries Manager, Andrew Whitehouse has been surveying for the Six banded nomad bee, which he recorded only once last year. B-Lines habitat restoration not only creates the opportunity to help our generalist pollinating insect, but much rarer species such as the two mentioned. Pycnanthemum tenuifolium, or slender mountain mint. With so many tiny flowers on each plant, there are often subtle color variations. Here we have speckled puple and white petals that are quite stunning up close. Despite the name, mountian mint generally grows in dry, rocky woods, prairies and fields, and even along roadsides, streams and wet thickets. Here is a photo of a very cool moth I found in Costa Rica last summer. It is called the Cuban sphinx (Eupyrrhoglossum sagra) and as the name suggest it is a type of sphinx moth in the family sphingidae. Although it is a moth this species is mostly active during the day, flying from flower to flower in the search of food. Cimicifuga simplex is the latest of the bugbanes to be in bloom. Its arching flowers fill the garden with a pleasant sweet scent, unlike the earlier blooming Cimicifugas, that give this plant its common name. This wonderful woodland treasure gives a spectacular late show at the end of September and is frequently visited by bees. These little creatures are so hypnotised by the scent, that they occasionally miss the time to get home to the hive and they cling on to the flowers until the morning dew is dried off from their wings. May all your weeds be wildflowers 🌼 A few years ago I sprinkled some poppy seeds onto a patch of soil in the corner of the garden. It was as much gardening as I could manage back then The next year I added Californian poppies, foxgloves and daisy seeds and along came self seeded plants like dandelions, thistles and others I dont know the name of! Its now a tiny wildflower meadow that brightens up what was a dull corner and is always full of bees and insects. Its not always easy to get out into nature when you have a disability so Im grateful I could bring a little bit of nature to me! We found this little guy at work. We spent the afternoon making sure he was safe and that no one would step on him. I was a little worried to leave him as he hadnt flown off all afternoon. I was pleased when I checked the following morning to see that he had flown off. The children asked if he was ok! Harmonia axyridis🐞 ‘Biting Alien Ladybirds Riddled with STDs are Swarming the UK in their Millions’ - an actual headline from a DailyMail article from 2016, anyone remember the media frenzying upon these Harlequin ladybirds lol¿ 𓇬 I spotted lots of these on young lime shoots right in the middle of Bristol, in larval, pupal and adult forms. You can see the bottom right one is freshly emerged, as its spots are still developing and has a faded appearance. These highly variable ladybirds are native to Asia, the succinea (orange with black spots) and spectabilis form (black with yellow spots) were found here. 𓇬 After being introduced to North America by humans as an attempt to control aphids, these voracious ladybirds have successfully established themselves across continents, reaching the UK in 2004, competing with native ladybirds for food, and sometimes preying upon their larvae. Our homes offer the dry, safe space in which the adults seek to overwinter. If threatened, they can sometimes give a small bite, and release a defensive chemical from their legs as known with all ladybirds.
