Pycnanthemum tenuifolium, or slender mountain mint. With so many tiny flowers on each plant, there are often subtle color variations. Here we have speckled puple and white petals that are quite stunning up close. Despite the name, mountian mint generally grows in dry, rocky woods, prairies and fields, and even along roadsides, streams and wet thickets. Meet Marisa Papetti, beekeeper extraordinaire and owner of @mariesbeeswa. 🐝 Marisa is known for her fabulous honey, which she sells online and delivers personally to local buyers. She loves to educate people about the bees and their importance in our world. She also teaches popular cheese-making classes, which she recently began offering online. ⁠🍯 ⁠ I’ve been spending quite a bit of time in the kitchen. We will be officially be releasing four new products in September. A Honey Oxymel, Ginger/Lemon Creamed Honey, Extreme Hot Honey and a Mother Honey for new moms. The male Longhorn bee (Eucera longicornis) is instantly recognisable, owing to its extraordinary long antennae. A much declined species they are now are confined to a few inlands sites and coastal areas. Even rarer still is the associated parasite, the Six-banded nomad bee (Nomada sexfasciata). Our Countries Manager, Andrew Whitehouse has been surveying for the Six banded nomad bee, which he recorded only once last year. B-Lines habitat restoration not only creates the opportunity to help our generalist pollinating insect, but much rarer species such as the two mentioned. I’ve really started getting more interested into isopods as of late and a recently got these porcellio hoffmansegi from @arthropod_ambassadors very awesome species, not necessarily for their color, but for their size. This species can reach nearly 2 inches! For a terrestrial isopod that is huge. The one in the video is munching on some fish flakes. This species is from Spain and are a must have for isopod and invert enthusiasts. These are sexually dimorphic. The males have much longer uropods than the females. Uropods are the appendages that come out of the back of the animal. In other crustaceans this would be the tail of lobsters and crabs. I’m definitely getting more species in the future to spice up my invertebrate collection. Plus they don’t take up much space 😅. Bees are REALLY important – and not just honey bees but also the over 4,000 different species of Native American bees. In fact, the honey bee, remarkable as it is, doesn’t know how to pollinate a tomato or an eggplant flower, while some native bees are masters at this. 🌻🐝 Over the past 10 years, weve heard a lot about the shocking disappearance of honey bees. However, many people dont realize is that Native bees are dying off as well! Fortunately, there are some conservation superheroes on a mission to save these bees! In 2013, natural history photographer Clay Bolt set out on an adventure to meet, photograph and tell the stories of many of these beautiful, beneficial insects. Soon he came across a specimen of a rusty-patched bumble bee in a scientific collection and learned about its tragic decline. Determined to use his photography to create more awareness about the insects demise, Clay worked with partners to create a film, which he then shared across the country on behalf of the bee, from small venues to a rare opportunity to present it on Capitol Hill. In January 2017 these efforts paid off, and the rusty-patched bumble bee became the first species of native North American bee to receive protection under the Endangered Species Act. In 2019, Bolt became the first photographer to document a living Wallaces Giant Bee—the worlds largest bee, which was thought to be extinct for nearly 40 years. Clay Bolt will be at Panama Rocks for the Wild America Nature Festival on July 27 & 28. During his engaging presentation, he will discuss North America’s native bees, the important roles that they play in our lives, and let us know what we can all do to help save them. A pellicle is a colony of microbes that float to the top of their medium (think: a kombucha Scoby). In this case, the microbes are a strain of lactobacillus that we keep around to sour some of our favorite brews. These critters consume malt & produce the tangy lactic acid that makes our kettle sours tart & complex. They are able to do so aerobically or anaerobically (w/ or w/out oxygen). Though it’s unclear exactly why they sometimes form a pellicle, it may be because it creates an advantageous barrier to keep out oxygen- advantageous for them because it keeps out competitive O2-loving microbes. A bee colony is a ‘single living entity’ (Tautz). - Once you understand a little of bee biology and the superorganism concept, you realise that much of what conventional beekeeping does is harmful to the bees. - Built entirely from wax produced by the bees, the comb may be thought of as a central organ of this bee superorganism: its skeleton, skin and liver – although even this clumsy analogy falls short of describing its importance to the bee colony. - The comb has many functions: it is a shelter, a nursery, a place for food preparation and storage, a communication network, an information storage facility and the first line of defence against disease. The comb is at once incredibly delicate and incredibly strong. - We have been 100% natural comb since 2006 - and remain the only professional natural comb beekeepers in Australia. With the onset of COVID-19, beekeepers across the country found a shortage of queens available for their apiary function. Mini operators in Alberta depend on importation of queen stocks and have never practised self-sufficient management. An exciting time to be a beekeeper here in Alberta, is the present time. Beekeeping industries are changing around the world; food production, commodity prices, and the economy, are all things that are being reworked, are under threat, or need to become more self-sufficient. Alberta beekeepers are feeling the crunch of closed borders, difficulty in getting labour, and the expense of doing business. Queen production will decrease these issues and increase not only capacity of the operations but also the quality of stocks that are being developed locally. I think the best thing that can come out of all of this in the world of beekeeping is self-sufficiency. Check out this great queen 📸 by one of @nithvalleyapiaries beekeepers! • • • • • • A virgin queen bee 🐝 • When its hot out a fully populated hive will sometime swarm. The hive will raise swarm cells (queen cells) while the old queen takes off with a large part of the hive population to find a new home elsewhere. • Once the first cell hatches, the queen will go around destroying all other unhatched queens and claim her throne. • A virgin queen needs to go on her mating flight before she can fulfill her duties. A queen usually mates with 5 to 18 drones (male bees) who die after that. • • • Our beekeepers found this hive with 10 swarm cells (queen cells) hatching. They collected the queens/cells to put each into its own new hive and left one of them in that hive to take the throne. Isnt she beautiful!! - @ontariobeekeepersassociation on Instagram

I banked on 2.5 days removing a few smaller hives - instead we spent 2 full days removing one of the biggest colonies we’ve ever encountered! We have a combined total of 52.5 hours in this monster - and that doesn’t include any of the preparation time or clean up at home or the setting up of these bees in their new home on the farm! I sometimes forget just how many hours go into cutouts behind the scenes! We were extremely fortunate to work with property owners who understand the important of honeybees as well as all of the work that is involved in this type of work! Endeavours like this are not cheap! The days are long, the work is labour intensive and HOT! Oh - and the multiple stings her day aren’t enjoyable 🤣 We will be returning to this location in a couple of days to ensure there aren’t any stragglers trying to move in and once that is confirmed - our part of this job will be done!
