With the help of citizen scientists, astrophysicists have discovered about 100 cool worlds in the Sun’s neighborhood. They’re brown dwarfs, sometimes referred to as “failed stars,” which are objects that are more massive than planets but lighter than stars. Keck Observatory data helped reveal that some of the them are among the coolest brown dwarfs ever discovered with temperatures nearly as cool as Earth’s – cool enough to harbor water clouds! — These free-floating worlds are located just 23 to 60 light-years away from the Sun. Congrats to Aaron Meisner of @noirlabastro, Adam Burgasser of @ucsandiego, Backyard Worlds: Planet 9, and the entire team! — Learn more: keckobservatory.org/cool-brown-dwarfs — 📸: NOIRLab/NSF/AURA/P. Did scientists just find life on Venus?! In a paper released this week in Nature Astronomy, astronomer Jane Greaves at Cardiff University and an international team of scientists announced the presence of phosphine in Venus’s atmosphere. Phosphine is considered a “biosignature”—a molecule strongly associated with the chemistry of life that has few non-life methods of production, particularly on a rocky planet like Venus. The team used two observatories—the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) in Hawaii and the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) in Chile—to verify their detection. The implications are massive: there could be life in Venus’ atmosphere. This may sound implausible, but there are regions of Venus’ upper atmosphere that are remarkably temperate and relatively hospitable. For decades there has been a hypothesis that, against the odds, microbial life forms could be floating around the planet. This detection is one piece of evidence in support of that hypothesis, but we are far from proving the existence of life. A real photo of Saturn from Earth! 😯 Saturns Rings are one of the most striking features of the solar system. They encircle the sixth planet from the sun in bizarre configurations, each thousands of miles wide but just a few dozen feet thick. The rings are mostly ice with a little bit of rock mixed in. Venus hosts possible signs of life, a new discovery suggests. Telescopes have detected unusually high concentrations of the molecule phosphine—a stinky, flammable chemical typically associated with feces, farts and rotting microbial activity—in an atmospheric layer far above the planet’s scorching surface. The finding is curious because here on Earth, phosphine is essentially always associated with living creatures, either as a by-product of metabolic processes or of human technology such as industrial fumigants and methamphetamine labs. Although toxic to many organisms, the molecule has been singled out as a potentially unambiguous signature of life because it is so difficult to make through ordinary geological or atmospheric action. The human species is going into lock-down mode. Self-quarantine for a species that is magic and hyper destructive. Let’s use this moment to recalibrate, to reflect and to become aware of our fragility, of beauty and of the time we have left to change the way we live on this wondersome planet, this gift of a home. Let’s use this moment to develop a Masterplan for the massive challenges we created: Climate Change, Plastic Pollution, Agricultural Run-off, Overfishing. It’s a great moment to reset, to end the ‘Toxic Age’ and to drive what we at @parley.tv call the ‘Material Revolution’. Individually and professionally. For the Oceans, Climate and Life.

- I finally managed to get a clear view of the Cassini Division. This is a gap thats only a few hundred miles wider than the continental usa!

NASA Releases a New Poster for the Europa Clipper Mission In this decade and the next, some very impressive missions will take place. For instance, NASA will send its robotic Europa Clipper orbiter investigate Jupiter’s icy moon Europa for the first time. The orbiter will launch sometime in the middle of the decade (likely 2024) and arrive in the Jovian sytem in the 2030s to look for possible signs of life. In preparation for this momentous event, NASA recently released a stunning new mission poster. As you can see, the poster features the orbiter looking down on Europa’s icy surface with Jupiter hanging in the background. The orbiter itself is in shadow so as to draw attention to the landscape beneath it. This helps to relate the importance of the Europa Clipper‘s mission, which will be to investigate the composition, chemistry, energy, and interior ocean of this icy moon – and thus determine if it could support life. In this respect, the mission will answer questions that have plagued astronomers ever since the Voyager probes passed through the system in 1979. It was these missions that took the first high-quality images of the moon’s surface, which hinted at the presence of a liquid ocean underneath. Since then, only one mission has been to Jupiter and studied its large moons directly. This was the Galileo mission, which orbited Jupiter for almost eight years and obtained data that bolstered the case for any interior ocean. The next mission to do this was Juno, which arrived around Jupiter in 2016 and will continue to study its atmosphere, magnetosphere, and interior environment. The mission will end in July of next year when the spacecraft will crash into the planet’s atmosphere. While the spacecraft managed to obtain data on Io’s volcanism and the first images of Ganymede’s polar regions, it did not study the Jovian moons in depth. - Sunlight reflecting off oceans of methane on Saturns moon, Titan

Astronomers may have found a signature of life on Venus 👨‍🚀👩‍🚀 Evidence indicates phosphine, a gas associated with living organisms, is present in the habitable region of Venus’ atmosphere. This does not mean that we will discover life SOON considering that methane has been discovered on Mars also back in 2003 and we have yet to discover some form of life there. Another good candidate is Saturns moon - Titan. There has also been found giant amounts of methane lakes. It is thought that there may be creatures living in these lakes which would take in hydrogen instead of oxygen and release methane instead of carbon dioxide. Not a day goes by that I don’t dream of exploring the other worlds that inhabit our solar system. More often than not, I find myself wondering what it would be like to visit the icy moon of Saturn called Enceladus. I’ve always found icy worlds to be especially interesting, even in science fiction. Hoth has always been my favourite planet from Star Wars. As strange as it may sound, I’ve always wanted to visit Antarctica. My love of ice worlds has me dreaming about visiting Enceladus. Orbiting Saturn at distance of 1.4 billion km away from the sun, Enceladus is an icy moon with a diameter of 504 km. Enceladus turned out to be one of the most unique worlds in our solar system, including being one of the most likely locations we’ll encounter alien life. Underneath its icy crust, astronomers believe there exists a subsurface ocean of liquid water. The first concrete proof of this subsurface ocean came from the discovery of geysers along the moon’s South Pole. Despite its size and distance from the sun, Enceladus is generating enough heat in its interior to power the moon’s geology. Small worlds don’t tend to be geologically active given that small objects lose heat a lot faster. Like some of the moons of Jupiter, the internal heat of Enceladus is caused by gravitational tidal forces that generate friction within the moon’s core. The heat is sufficient to melt subsurface ice and create a layer of liquid water. Occasionally this water finds its way to the surface in the form of large geysers that spew water into space. Some of this water falls back onto the surface as a fresh coating of snow. Most of it, however, escapes into space and becomes part of Saturn’s rings. During some of Cassini’s flybys of Enceladus, it flew directly through the geysers and sampled the water. Cassini found evidence of organic molecules, meaning that Enceladus has all of the stuff needed for life to form and flourish. The age old question to whether we’re alone or not may be closer than we ever imagined. #DidYouKnow that Kelpler-22b was the first exoplanet to be found within a habitable zone? (The right distance from a star for a planet to have water!) This potentially-watery planet is twice the size of Earth- and thats normal! Most exoplanets discovered are two times the size of Earth, however none exist within our local solar system...
