In what could be a major space breakthrough, a group of researchers from the U.S. and China have, for the very first time, found evidence for the existence of a potential planet outside the Milky Way Galaxy. If this discovery is confirmed, the said planet will be named M51-ULS-1b. The first ever exoplanet—a planet outside our solar system—was found in the year 1992. Since then, thousands of exoplanets have been discovered, but this is the first time an extragalactic planet, i.e. a potential planet outside our galaxy, has been discovered. This new world is situated approximately 23 million light-years away from the Earth, and lies within the M51 Whirlpool Galaxy, which is located relatively close to Ursa Major. . . . #space #galaxy #milkyway #saturn #solarsystem #spacenews #weather #weatherchannel #theweatherchannel - @weatherindia on Instagram

M2-9: Wings of a Butterfly Nebula Are stars better appreciated for their art after they die? Actually, stars usually create their most artistic displays as they die. In the case of low-mass stars like our Sun and M2-9 pictured here, the stars transform themselves from normal stars to white dwarfs by casting off their outer gaseous envelopes. The expended gas frequently forms an impressive display called a planetary nebula that fades gradually over thousands of years. M2-9, a butterfly planetary nebula 2100 light-years away shown in representative colors, has wings that tell a strange but incomplete tale. In the center, two stars orbit inside a gaseous disk 10 times the orbit of Pluto. The expelled envelope of the dying star breaks out from the disk creating the bipolar appearance. Much remains unknown about the physical processes that cause and shape planetary nebulae. Whos in the mood for Pi? A newly-discovered exoplanet sitting 186 light-years away from us has been coined π Earth by its Discoverers because its around the same size as Earth, and takes an incredibly short 3.14 days to orbit around its star. Officially named K2-315b, its close proximity to its star unfortunately means that it has little to no chance of harboring life even at its high speed, because its surface is estimated to be a sweltering 180 degrees Celsius. . . . #Planetpi #PiEarth #Astronomy #Astronomyfacts #Space #Stars #Planets #Spacefact #K2315b #Exoplanet #Rockyplanet #DiscoveryFacts - @discovery_seasia on Instagram

Follow @galaxy.echoes Can you see the largest volcano in the solar system? 🌋 I’ll help you.. the dark “dot” in the upper right (north east) region of the planet is Olympus Mons. The largest known volcano which has the size of Arizona (in diameter). In comparison, Hawaiis Mauna Loa, the tallest volcano on Earth, rises 6.3 miles (10 km) above the sea floor (but its peak is only 2.6 miles above sea level). The volume contained by Olympus Mons is about a hundred times that of Mauna Loa, and the Hawaiian island chain that houses the Earthly volcano could fit inside its Martian counterpart. Olympus Mons rises three times higher than Earths highest mountain, Mount Everest, whose peak is 5.5 miles above sea level. Astronomers have discovered signs of what might be life in Venus toxic atmosphere. ✨ Writing today in Nature Astronomy, an international team of researchers say they’ve found the gas phosphine—a natural byproduct of life—in Venus atmosphere. Previous findings suggest that on rocky planets, the smelly, flammable gas can only be made by life. So what could phosphine in the clouds of Venus mean? Could there be microbial life on the planet? 📷: Venus photographed in ultraviolet light by the Pioneer Venus Orbiter (Pioneer 12) spacecraft, Feb. 26, 1979. - After a lot of questions and posts to this subreddit, I was finally able to take a shot at some photography. Here is Jupiter from last night. Thanks for all your help!
In a surprising twist, scientists at MIT, @cardiffuni, and elsewhere have observed what may be signs of life in the clouds of closer planetary neighbor, Venus. #VenusNews Read about the research, see link in profile. #astronomy #astrophysics #PlanetaryScience #research #astronomy #space #exoplanets #life @mit_eaps @mitscience - @mitpics on Instagram

Astronomers may have found a signature of life on Venus 👨🚀👩🚀 Evidence indicates phosphine, a gas associated with living organisms, is present in the habitable region of Venus’ atmosphere. This does not mean that we will discover life SOON considering that methane has been discovered on Mars also back in 2003 and we have yet to discover some form of life there. Another good candidate is Saturns moon - Titan. There has also been found giant amounts of methane lakes. It is thought that there may be creatures living in these lakes which would take in hydrogen instead of oxygen and release methane instead of carbon dioxide.
