Julia Margaret Cameron (British (born India), Calcutta 1815–1879 Kalutara, Ceylon) When one of Julia Margaret Camerons daughters handed her her first camera she said: It may amuse you, Mother, to try to photograph during your solitude at Freshwater. From that moment, Cameron, forty-eight, took the fun seriously. Cameron, similar to Victorian photographers of the time, in his images imitated popular scenes romantic and pre-Raphaelist paintings. In the particular case of Cameron, his portraits were different, representing that classic universe, through sensitive compositions about female beauty with a more real appearance manifesting human qualities. From that experience, for example, the portraits of Ellen Terry, Alice Pleasance Liddell, the Alice of Lewis Carroll, Julia Jackson, her niece who would be the mother of Virginia Woolf stand out. She was a photographer who in her beginnings book important battles against the purist paternalism of the photographic community of the time that criticizes her work for not being technically perfect, was not sharp, reflected a careless manipulation. Cameron was focused on his speech and used photography as a medium. From that perspective, his work marked a powerful discourse that changed the way people look at girls and women with more natural portraits by showing them disheveled, half dressed, with everyday attitudes with the idea of reflecting more their natures and hers. Rarely seen as the face of a space programme, Dorothy Vaughan’s contributions to @NASA were vast. Born #OnThisDay 1910, Dorothy Vaughan was a mathematician and NASA’s first black manager. As well as being the first African-American to receive a promotion at the agency, she was an expert in FORTRAN - a frontrunner of electronic computer programming. Vaughan initially worked as a ‘human computer’, producing complex mathematical calculations by hand. Her work involved calculating wind-tunnel and flight data, key parameters to analyse the flight characteristics of aircraft. In 1958 Vaughan joined the new Analysis and Computation Division, a group on the frontier of electronic computing. Teaching herself FORTRAN (an early computer programming language), she went on to teach the programme to many of her other colleagues. Vaughan contributed to many of NASA’s key milestones, such as the Scout Launch Vehicle that sent some of Americas first satellites into space. Our latest blog explores Dorothy’s trailblazing career and contributions to NASA. ORIGINAL TODAY ————————————— HERNING, 10-JUL-2020, 19:31 This is Valdemar Madsen, wearing a FISHERMAN sweater. The year is 1930, he is at Odden, Sealand, Denmark — fishing after blue-fin tuna. This is the oldest image, we have of a FISHERMAN sweater. We know with certainty that we made this sweater since 1923, and probably since our founding in 1919. And we did not change the design. A key trait is our signature “bubbles” ( in danish: knopper ). So here is the quiz: How many bubbles do we use in a panel on the chest? Three panels, how many rows of bubbles each? #snsherning #siden1919 #originaltoday #fishermansweater - @snsherning on Instagram

A double whammy in Birthdays today; Mark Rothko and Robert Bresson. I ran across this description of Bresson and thought it could also be about Rothko “the filmmaker has attained an even deeper mystique, compelling viewers to project their own emotional and psychological interpretations onto his spare images. Perhaps that was the point all along: the ascetic, objective and sparse nature of his work creates a wide canvas that invites and envelopes the careful viewer, and leaves us enraptured.” #bornthisday #markrothko #robertbresson #auhazardbalthazar #annewiazemsky #pickpocket #thetrialofjoanofarc #l’agent #diaryofacountrypriest - @dimitri_unique on Instagram

. 📸 © Fondazione Archivio Antonio Ligabue di Parma . LIGABUE & VITALONI. The Irish Georgian Society has learnt with great sadness that the Hon. Desmond Guinness (1931-2020) has passed away. We are indebted to his legacy in founding the Irish Georgian Society in 1958, together with the late Mariga Guinness. He boldly championed the cause of Irelands architectural heritage at a time when it faced great challenges through neglect and the threat of demolition from new development. In spite of hostility in some quarters, through his ardent campaigning, educating and working to save numerous buildings we are surrounded by a rich legacy of historic buildings saved to be celebrated as an integral part of our culture and identity. He has inspired us all and, for the thousands of members and supporters of the Irish Georgian Society in Ireland and around the world, Desmond has truly been a Conservation Hero. .
