Two years ago today was w/o a doubt one of the most difficult days for me—right next to 9/11/18, which this day obviously memorialized. In typical me fashion, I waited till the very last minute to write my dad’s eulogy. Was up the entire night before, unable to put my thoughts on paper, till literally an hour before his services when it all finally came together; and then when it was time to read what I wrote, the pages appeared blank but the words were fortunately etched in my head. I’m not even sure I made sense, but I did what I promised him I’d do, and that’s all what matters. Little Man couldn’t bring himself to say anything—so he played Amazing Grace on his trumpet, just as he’d promised grandpa he would. Pretty sure we made him proud. I photographed this 100 year old woman in her small ranch kitchen outside Gallatin Gateway, Montana many years ago. People among their stuff tells a more in-depth story. I had her hold the wedding photo, and honestly I cannot now remember if it was hers or her parents photo, but the point was to remind the viewer that this 100 year old woman was once very young like them. And that when she looks out at the world she sees it as she did when she was young. People’s bodies grow old but the person inside does not. My dad argued in front of Justice Ginsburg in 1994 when she was fresh on the bench so I got to sit in that massive hall of justice and watch it all go down. In the end, it wasn’t pretty for Dad, a fierce anti-death penalty activist — only Harry Blackmun sided with his case. Fun fact: Blackmun was a Republican appointed by Nixon but ended up one of the more liberal judges on the court in the 80s and early 90s, and although in our family he’s known as the author of the dissent for my dad’s case Tuilaepa v. California, he is most famous for being the author of the court’s opinion on Roe v Wade. But this is about cooking... This is one of the earliest Peaking Lights setups , totally impractical way of playing! There were so many wires it took us about an hour to just set it up. I really miss playing this way. It was insanely hard to travel with. I really want to write another record with all this homemade stuff and play it live but audiences seem to have become less patient and expect everything to be played *exactly like the record. Less and less people seem to find failure as attractive and blown out fuzz drenched warmth intoxicating. It was always a struggle with most sound persons to describe that the electric buzz was part of it 😂 there were a few sound people over the years that still stick out in my mind! One woman in vancouver I think her name was Swan and this guy at Lopan in CPH ... Two shows at an actual club where they just seemed to nail it! When we first went overseas we had to downsize which was still massive! Then we started having kids and we had to downsize again because we were travelling with the added baby gear. Now slowly over the years we’re building it back up :) I’d like to get to this stage again, both of us sitting down with a rediculous amount of dusty gear 😂✌️ - @peakinglights on Instagram
