How cute is this animal? When hiking in steep talus slopes of the park, you may hear high-pitched squeaks among the rocks. That would be the pika. Pika are the cutest of all the cute animals and, although they look like rodents, they are in the order Lagomorpha and are closely related to the rabbit. You may see pika scurrying about with a mouth full of grass. Pikas don’t hibernate and need to prepare for the winter. During the summer, they will collect grasses and other materials to store over the winter for food. Black Footed Ferrets, especially as kits, will hop back and forth in what is called a “ferret dance.” Last fall, Black Footed Ferret kits were released in the park to help boost the population genetics of this endangered and elusive mammal. Recent surveys revealed survival through the last year. Awww 😍 Two beautiful pine marten kits! Pine martens are known to be mostly solitary apart from the breeding season. Females will give birth in early spring to between 3 to 5 young. My kind have lived in Ireland for at least 6000 years, but almost became extinct in the 20th century. Thanks to legal protections there are now an estimated 4000 of us. Very exciting news! A group of staff and volunteers from @naturalengland spotted pine martens in Cornwall! There has only been one other sighting of a pine marten confirmed in the county in the last 100 years - even more excitingly, the team spotted not one but TWO! Ah, the elusive and fantastic pine marten! Martens may avoid open ground to reduce the risk of predation. Pine martens aren’t confined to woodland, but each animal requires from 86 to 166 hectares of woodland within its territory. Once found across Britain, the pine marten was prone to persecution until relatively recently. Though it has recovered a little from a dramatic decline, the species is still rare. Scotland’s population is estimated at 3,700 adult pine martens. The species was given full legal protection in 1988. Pine martens are once again established across much of Scotland north of the central belt, with outlying populations in parts of the Scottish Borders and Dumfries and Galloway.
