What kind of cat is this? I was sent this message from some friends in the forestry and wildlife department here in Perú. Margay I said (Leopardus wiedi). This margay is maybe 2-3 months old in this picture, taken as a pet from the wild likely from the burrow where her mom left her. The department drove three hours to rescue her from this situation, and another two to drop her off in the local community where l could pick her up. Shes a feisty one! Good news! Today, California’s mountain lions, bobcats, owls, and other wildlife are a bit safer as they travel outside of protected areas like the Los Padres National Forest. California has enacted a bill that limits the use of certain rodenticides that linger in the food chain for weeks, killing not just the targeted rodent, but also their predators and scavengers. Desmodus rotundus è una specie di pipistrello detta vampiro vero di Azara. È un pipistrello dalle medie dimensioni, ha un corpo che varia dai 68 e 93 mm, un avambraccio tra i 53 e 65 mm, le orecchie possono variare da 15 a 20 mm per un peso di 45 gr. Hanno degli incisivi molto lunghi e sviluppati, e la loro bocca e poi composta da piccoli denti. Forma colonie dai 20 ai 100 individui, ma sono state ritrovate anche colonie di 5000 esemplari. È un animale che vive in tutta l’America del Sud dentro a grotta con spiragli di luce. Il suo nome deriva appunto dal fatto che, si nutre esclusivamente di sangue di altri vertebrati, si nutre soprattutto di animali domestici grazie appunto ai suoi incisivi. I suoi movimenti sono agili e furtivi, non atterra sulla preda ma nelle sue vicinanze, e si avvicina ad essa con piccoli passetti e saltelli. Negli ultimi anni sono stati riscontrati attacchi anche a bambini compresi tra gli 8 e i 15 anni, che dopo il loro morso viene contratta la rabbia e nella maggior parte dei casi sopravviene la morte. Sono animali molto altruisti tra loro, alcuni esemplari possono rigurgitare il proprio pasto ai piccoli o altri membri della colonia. Si riproduce tutto l’anno, le nascite hanno due picchi tra Aprile e Maggio e tra Settembre e Ottobre e verrà data alla luce un piccolo oppure un parto gemellare sennò. La gestazione dura circa 7 mesi e nascerà un piccolo da 5 a 7 grammi. Vivono in media in natura circa 12 anni mentre in cattività anche fino a 19 anni. We track radio-collared adult females to their dens and count, weigh, sex, measure, collect DNA and ear-tag the kittens so that we can identify individuals on remote cameras that we place at the mothers kills. A solitary animal, it has a reputation for ferocity and strength out of proportion to its size, with the ability to kill prey many times larger than itself. Happy Black-Footed Ferret Day! 🐾 The Zoo welcomed a litter of five kits back in June to first-time parents, Oma and Curious George. The ferret Keepers were pretty thrilled as Curious George (last photo) tends to be everyones favourite (shh, dont tell the others!) He overcame a serious ear infection when he was younger and as a result, he can be a little lopsided (which to us, makes him super endearing). This clearly doesnt hold him back though As their mothers name is Oma, German for grandmother, these 5 kits have all been given names which means grandmother/father in different cultures. The three females are Nana, Babushka, and Abuela, and the two males are Pop Pop and Nonno. The Keeper team has processed all the kits to ensure they are in tip-top health, and they will remain in the breeding and release program at the Zoo The Zoo has participated in a breeding and release program for black-footed ferrets since 1992. Very exciting news! A group of staff and volunteers from @naturalengland spotted pine martens in Cornwall! There has only been one other sighting of a pine marten confirmed in the county in the last 100 years - even more excitingly, the team spotted not one but TWO! Did you know ferrets have moves? Black Footed Ferrets, especially as kits, will hop back and forth in what is called a “ferret dance.” Last fall, Black Footed Ferret kits were released in the park to help boost the population genetics of this endangered and elusive mammal. Recent surveys revealed survival through the last year. During spotlight surveys, staff placed readers over prairie dog holes that will scan for a chip in order to identify animals and determine if they have been vaccinated against Sylvatic Plague. Ah, the elusive and fantastic pine marten! Martens may avoid open ground to reduce the risk of predation. Pine martens aren’t confined to woodland, but each animal requires from 86 to 166 hectares of woodland within its territory. Once found across Britain, the pine marten was prone to persecution until relatively recently. Though it has recovered a little from a dramatic decline, the species is still rare. Scotland’s population is estimated at 3,700 adult pine martens. The species was given full legal protection in 1988. Pine martens are once again established across much of Scotland north of the central belt, with outlying populations in parts of the Scottish Borders and Dumfries and Galloway. Wildlife Rescue in the Daintree: our latest arrival is a fully grown male Eastern tube-nosed bat (Nyctimene Robinsoni) found on the ground in Port Douglas and delivered to Wildlife Habitat Port Douglas before being passed to us. No broken bones or obvious injury (apart from an abraded swollen right wrist) but treating for possible variables such as infection, cat attack or collision - with hydration, anti-inflammatories and antibiotics. Love these little guys and his name is Rosco. - @daintreelife on Instagram
