Strength training for runners 🔑 . Strength training is often overlooked in the running community. Many runners I come into contact with like you focus on running, and maybe some stretching and recovery in the hopes they can run more. What they often miss is how much they could benefit from some specific strength training. . Strength is an essential element of running. Some form of strength training routine can greatly improve a runners resilience, endurance, and even mechanics over time. . ✅ Closed chain single leg strength: . • Closed chain means that the foot is in contact with the ground when doing the exercise. • Running requires a great deal of closed chain strength and control, as it is basically a series of single leg hops. • Closed chain single leg exercises will directly improve hip strength and control, which is needed while running to maintain integrity and stability through the kinetic chain. . This includes exercises such as: • Lunges • Split squats/Rear foot elevated split squats • Single leg squats • Single leg deadlifts • Step ups/step downs • Etc. . 1️⃣ Develop competence doing some of these exercises (they can be difficult and demand a lot of control). 2️⃣ Load them up. This is one of the first drawings I submitted to a gallery show after I graduated from college. I was not sure what I was making work about, and I was sort of using a combination of drawing what I new I could draw well and working on paring down a drawing to only the most essential components. I’m not sure where the idea for this combination of figures came from. Like I really don’t remember, which is why I don’t often share work from this period of time. The drawing was accepted into a group show for artists under 35. Up and comers, I guess? And it sold at the show to someone I don’t know. I never even got a good photograph of it—this was taken on a crummy old point-and-shoot. Its probably good that it sold right then and there, because otherwise I know I would have purged it in some studio cleanup where I throw out anything I’m unsure about. If it’s not interesting to me now, it never will be! It’s an odd thing to make stuff. It feels like it belongs to me only for the amount of time it takes me to make it.
