This week, Human Rights Watch released a report on people with disabilities dying in Western Australian prisons. To coincide with the launch, we’re posting comments from activists and partner organizations who work on this issue. Hannah McGlade, Associate Professor, Curtin University and Expert Member, UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues: “Aboriginal people have been dying in custody for too long and its important that Human Rights Watch has investigated Aboriginal deaths and mistreatment and made recommendations in response. Over 25 years ago, Aboriginal people called for a Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody and to this day many recommendations have been unimplemented. This is particularly the case in Western Australia, which has the highest rate of Aboriginal incarceration in the nation, and possibly the world. Its time we took human rights more seriously as we are bound to do under the human rights treaties that we signed. This is our country, and Aboriginal lives matter. “The government should implement the findings of the Australian Law Reform Commission inquiry Pathways to Justice, there is systemic and structural bias and discrimination in the criminal justice system and too many people, especially vulnerable people such as women, children and youth, are being sent to prison under outdated punitive laws, particularly the mandatory detention laws. We just published a new investigation with a simple premise: we asked janitors how things are really being cleaned as Coronavirus rages. The bad news is really bad. Dirty rags, rushed shifts, airplane bathrooms that arent disinfected between flights, a cleaner at a fancy Miami office tower who resorted to bringing in her own bleach. Think about how many custodians work: Unseen. At night. Jobs go to the lowest bidder. Median wage is $13 an hour. In recent years, many workplaces have cut back on cleaning. (I hadn’t known this.) Now: Enter coronavirus. Airplane cleaners say many between-flight cleanings are still under 10 minutes. “Just pick up trash, check the seatbelts, cross them, make it look good, and if a tray table looks dirty, you wipe it,” said Barbara Gomez, who cleans American Airlines planes at LAX. (Thats her in the flowered shirt.) Or consider a Cheesecake Factory that reopened in CA last month. Maria del Carmen Mendez, a pregnant cleaner, said that even when her husband was hospitalized with Covid, she was expected to fill her shift-- and she did. I wish @kaepernick7 would do 2 things... first, endorse @joebiden and @kamalaharris, and second, admit that comparing @hillaryclinton to @realdonaldtrump, and not voting in 2016 was wrong. Many of you reading this are like me, actively pushing the vote in 2020 while actively supporting #kaepernick. We will call out friends, family and strangers who say they aren’t voting, but we won’t call out people with actual influence. We will call out @polowdadon for supporting Trump but we won’t call out those celebs who won’t vote but have the audacity to still complain. You can’t complain about what politicians do, then not participate in the political process. If you are going to sit on the sidelines you should do so while also shutting the fuck up. If you are going to waste your vote on a 3rd party candidate, or vote for everything except the president then shame on you for not understanding the power of the executive office, and for being okay with supporting a lost cause. When healthcare, civil and women’s rights are rolled back over the next 4 years by the Supreme Court, maybe you will understand then. Kaep’s @yourrightscamp is extremely important and commendable. It is the next nonprofit that I will be donating to. But our rights are determined by laws, which are passed by politicians. Let’s know our rights today, and let’s control our rights tomorrow by passing fair laws and electing better judges and DA’s. Then let’s hold them accountable when in office. I love Kaep, he is one of our heroes, but we need to ask even more from our heroes... another burden of being Black. If you aren’t voting for #bidenharris2020 you are directly or indirectly supporting #trump2020, and he appreciates you for that. Ordinary glass panels can act as solar panels when a layer of nanoparticles is sandwiched between two panes. This could help us take advantage of solar energy in cities where space for solar panels may be limited. . “If we’ve done our job, no one will even know that they’re there,” says Hunter McDaniel at UbiQD, a materials manufacturing firm in the US. He and his colleagues have developed transparent solar panels that are indistinguishable from regular glass. . Test installations, involving panels that are 1 square metre in size, are under way in buildings in the US and the Netherlands. The panels have a power conversion efficiency of 3.6 per cent, a measure of how much sunlight is converted into electricity. Opaque solar panels, in comparison, have efficiencies between 15 and 20 per cent. . These transparent panels are made from two layers of glass glued together with a polymer that contains nanoparticles known as quantum dots. With a core of copper indium sulphide and a shell of zinc sulphide, these quantum dots are tiny semiconductors that can manipulate light. . When the nanoparticles are excited by exposure to UV light, they release photons that travel along the transparent panel towards its edge. The perimeter is fitted with solar cells, which convert the photons into electrical current. It all started with a tweet and a prayer. About a month ago, after seeing the Chicago Black Town Hall I realized that the Bay needed a wake up call too. I messaged @eastbayvicious and we started talking about doing a town hall, similar to Chicago’s but also addressing our own issues. After that I contacted @militiasf @afrikaamerica @nostalgiajunki3 and @cocobuttah85 to create what is now the @baqncoalition . Soon after we new that what we were about to do was make a change for the better in our community. That’s when Freddie created our amazing survey and we brought on @chrissteelecreates and @amourateese . I want to give a huge thank you to @floridamaniac who ran the tech for us, thank you with out you there wouldn’t have been a town hall. Thank you to @prep_alpha and @thechotovelli for working with us to get folks paid and being patient with me as I learn a whole new side of organizing. Thank you Freddie, you are the epitome of a leader. You are one of the greatest voices of all time. You deserve all the good things in live and all the accolades, you deserve murals and roses and all the good things in live because you are part of making the movement not just leading it. I hope you know how much respect I have for you and admiration. This work is a labor of love, it is our love letter to our community. If you have had actual trauma that results in PTSD or cPTSD, recovery looks like learning to find safety in yourself again and comfortably coexist with it. You can still have a rich and meaningful purpose driven life- and the trauma is integrated into the story of your life and given its appropriate place- rather than being something that you are immersed in all the time. I think where things get confusing is wellness influencers suggesting everyone is traumatised, so if youre calling mild anxiety trauma, yes of course you can recover from that. PTSD, as most survivors know, inextricably changes your makeup. And healing doesnt look like the PTSD never existed. When youre immersed in it youre constantly on edge, anxious, dysregulated, and when youve done some work on it and have found safety in yourself- perhaps for the first time- when things trigger your PTSD you can (mostly) cope with it pretty well. You are (mostly) quite regulated. It doesnt mean its gone away, and doesnt occasionally flare up, it means youre in a much better place to deal with it. #inthetrencheswithyou - @seerutkchawla on Instagram

In one TikTok video, Puppy Girl Jenna cheekily begs for food under the table at a cafe before her owner feeds her a scrap of meat. In another, she’s told off for peeing on the floor and is locked in her cage as a punishment. But Jenna isn’t a newly acquired puppy in training. She’s a 21-year-old Texas woman who’s gone viral for her puppy persona, with a growing following on social media and OnlyFans. Since posting her first video in March, Jenna has achieved viral fame and gained 182,700 followers, many of whom supported her monthly income of £8,000 on OnlyFans. “It’s insane,” Jenna told VICE. “I never thought my weird dog kink would be looked at by a broad audience, or that so many people would like/care about it. It still blows my mind.” You might have heard of puppy play in the gay community, which first began gaining mainstream notoriety around 2015 with TV shows like Channel 4’s Secret Life of the Human Pups. Jenna is, by her own admission, the most recognisable puppy girl online, but her popularity speaks to a growing trend of straight women partaking in puppy play. For those who need a refresher, it’s essentially role-playing as a dog by barking, crawling on all fours, wearing a collar or chewing a toy. It’s a fetish rooted in BDSM and previously involved bondage gear like large leather dog masks known as “hoods” and head-to-toe rubber suits. It has nothing to do with the harm or abuse of actual dogs. Instead, the fetishisation of a human taking on dog-like attributes. By contrast, Jenna, like the growing number of cis, heterosexual women dabbling in puppy play, has a far softer approach to the fetish: she doesn’t always wear a hood, harness or accessories like ears or a tail. A 2019 study of gay puppy play fetishists identified a number of reasons participants were drawn in, including relaxation, therapy and escape from the self.
