This has been on my mind all morning. Not just the passing of Chadwick Boseman, but what roles he played while he was here. We all know the story of Jackie Robinson, but what we don’t know is how Jackie felt during his rise to greatness. We do not know the racial barriers he faced. We do not know the segregation his people faced unless you lived during that time, and we do not know what Jackie faced from an emotional standpoint as he battled racial segregation on a daily basis; how it made him feel and how was he able to press forward. . What we do know is the movie 42. We know how Chadwick played the role. We know how the movie depicts the life of Jackie. We know the emotion Chadwick brought to the screen, and we know the feelings it brought out in our hearts to watch a man face such oppression. . 42 was one of my favorite movies and i will forever be grateful for how Chadwick brought the life of number 42 to the screen. It started on a baseball diamond. where a younger me felt safe enough to build my own identity. I was a slow learner. a quiet kid. the diamond helped make me who I am today. my passionate, corky and unique self 🤙. then came the soccer field. the basketball court. the karate mat. the football turf. and yes, even, the chess table. And ultimately we found the cross country course. then at some point I realized the brand of my race spikes, my favorite split shorts and the ads I watched before meets - that brand was a company. Where real people worked on real problems. Getting more athletes into sports and making the world a more active place. That became the next race to track down. the job will never be done until the job is done. and there’s a long way to go right now. I’m here for it though. for the next kids up. for the ones in their own diamonds, fields, courts and courses. And even those still looking for their own place to compete. especially those ones. Coral Shores High School is dedicating their softball field as the Holly Given Memorial Field at the home opener on February 19th, 4:45 p.m.💛 “Coral Shores will be making a formal dedication of their softball field next Wednesday, February 19, 2020, in our home opener against Ferguson High School (5 PM). Here-to-fore, our softball facility will be known as Holly Given-Memorial Field. Holly was a three-sport standout for four-years at Coral Shores. Following graduation she moved on to play softball at Western Carolina and then returned to the Keys where she was a very active in a number of local causes. Tragically, she was slain in December of 2017, in a murder-suicide perpetrated by her ex-boyfriend. Holly was beloved throughout the Upper Keys and her name is now synonymous with domestic-abuse education. The “Fish for Holly-Sailfish Tournament” has quickly become a favored cause in the Upper Keys. Coral Shores has been one of the many beneficiaries of the tournament; proceeds have been used to scholarship Coral Shores’ graduates and for underwriting needs in the Coral Shores’ athletic department. In keeping with SB Policy 7250, Holly Given-Memorial Field will serve as a reminder of Holly’s life and civic contributions while giving (educational) perpetuity to the causes of domestic-abuse education and prevention. In 2005, directly out of college I sent my resume to resume@nationals.com . Baseball was coming back to Washington DC and I wanted to be a part of it. I was hired part time in the marketing department and the journey began. From establishing the Nat Pack, helping to implement the presidents race, and working the in-game entertainment, I formed some lifelong memories and made some life long friends. 27 years ago today, CdM resident Jim Abbott pitched a no-hitter for the New York Yankees. Only 10 Yankees pitchers have thrown a no-hitter in the franchise’s 120 years. What makes Abbott’s no-hitter even more remarkable is he was born without a right hand. Born in Flint, Michigan, Abbott had a 10 year career in the major leagues after being drafted by the Angels following a standout career at the University of Michigan (Go Blue!). As a sophomore at Michigan in 1987, he won the Sullivan Award as the Nation’s Top Amateur Athlete, the Golden Spikes Award as the top college baseball player, and became the first US pitcher to beat the Cuban national team in Cuba in 25 years. As a junior, he led the US to a Gold Medal in the 1988 Olympics, beating Japan in the final game in Seoul. He went straight from college to the starting rotation of the Angels without ever spending a day in the minor leagues. In 1991, he finished third in the voting for the Cy Young Award, given annually to the best pitcher in the league. He played 4 seasons for the Angels before they traded him to the Yankees in a cost-cutting move. He played 2 seasons in New York before signing with the White Sox who traded him back to the Angels, where he played 2 seasons before closing out his career with the White Sox and Brewers. Abbott retired from baseball in 1999 and raised two daughters with his wife, Dana, in Corona del Mar. Both of his daughters, Maddy and Ella, grew up to be standout athletes and followed in his footsteps by playing Volleyball and Water Polo, respectively, at the University of Michigan (Go Blue!). He is in demand as a motivational speaker and heavily involved in children’s charities. He has twice been named the March of Dimes Athlete of the Year, and received the Freedom Forum’s Free Spirit Award for his charitable work. He’s still very involved in disabled children’s causes and continues to make appearances for various charitable organizations. BALTIMORE (WJZ) — The Baltimore Orioles announced Sunday that pitcher Dean Kremer, one of the organization’s top prospects, will make his major league debut Sunday in a start against the New York Yankees. In doing so, he becomes the first Israeli citizen to reach the majors. Kremer is ranked as the O’s 10th best prospect by MLB Pipeline. He has risen quickly through the ranks of the organization since arriving in Baltimore as part of the Manny Machado trade in 2017. He assumes the roster position of pitcher David Hess, who was optioned Saturday night, and takes the rotation spot of Asher Wojciechowski. Kremer came close to reaching the big leagues last year when he posted a 3.72 ERA with 122 strikeouts over 113 2/3 innings across three levels ending at Triple-A. He was particularly effective as part of the rotation at Double-A Bowie, going 9-4 in 15 starts for the team. Kremer was born in California to Israeli parents and holds Israeli citizenship. He became the first Israeli to sign with an MLB team after being drafted in the 14th round by the Dodgers in 2016. 30 years ago today, this was the cover of Sports Illustrated. Reminds me of the era for us kids back then. To be a 8 to 14 year old in 1990. We were running around to card shows on the weekend at a bowling alley or hotel ballroom and crazy ones like me were autograph chasing waiting outside hotels where visiting teams were staying. The access was ridiculous. There were no back doors. You saw the biggest stars in the flesh and the nicest ones (Tony Gwynn to me) you actually had conversations with. Its why I love sports memorabilia so much today. I do regret one part of this and I hope to pass it on to the generation of kids. Get the picture of you and the athlete before the autograph, it will actually be worth a lot more to you. Luckily, due to social media, I think the value of the picture has risen to above the autograph for many and that’s a good thing. - @darrenrovell on Instagram
📢STOCK DROP TODAY📢 While the first formal Cleveland-based baseball team was formed in 1869, the Cleveland Indians only came to be in 1915. During the 1914-1915 season the owners thought a name change might reinvigorate the team and help their fans forget several recent disappointing seasons where they were dismissed. Prior to 1915, the team went through multiple names including: The Cleveland Forest City’s, the Cleveland Spiders, the Cleveland Blues, the Cleveland Broncos, and the Cleveland Naps. Similarly to the teams name, the Cleveland Indians have gone through 7 logos since 1918. Their first logo was a simple red ‘C’, but in 1928 they decided to use an image: a Native American head. Through the years their Native American head has gone from being simple and crudely drawn, to colorful and confusing, to simple and stylized. A logo similar to the one we see today first emerged in 1947 when the owner of the Indians, Bill Veeck, hired a 17-year-old ad agency artist named Walter Goldbach to design an Indian face for the teams logo. His original logo lasted 3 years, after which the Indians added a body to their logo and made his skin solid red. This marked the beginning of the logo known as Chief Wahoo. This logo remained almost identical, except for a couple minor visual adjustments, until 2018 when the Indians made the decision to officially retire the logo due to long-term outrage from the native Indian community and other activists, and controversy surrounding the racially insensitive subject matter. The Cleveland Indians have incredible heritage behind their name - having won the World Series in 1920 and 1948, and the American League championship in 1954, 1955, 1997 and 2016. Their team has been home to some of the greatest baseball players ever, with some of the most incredible accolades including: Elmer Smith hitting the first Grand Slam in World Series history, Jim Bagby hitting the first home run by a pitcher in World Series history, and Bill Wambsganss completing the only ever entirely unassisted triple play in World Series history. History and heritage flows through this team and will continue to do so, even after Chief Wahoo is gone. - @reduxclothingco on Instagram
